2024-2025 University of the Pacific Women's Basketball (PDF) - University of the Pacific

The University of Pacific could be a competitive game in the Spanos Center in Stockton tomorrow afternoon for multiple reasons. This is the definition of a potential "trap" game between the upset win last night over #19 Alabama and the ACC opener next Friday night against rival Stanford. The other reason is that UOP has won two consecutive games! They traveled to Houston and defeated the Cougars and returned home and emerged victorious in overtime over Oregon State last night.

The Tigers forced 29 turnovers (which included 17 steals) against the Beavers to earn the hard-fought decision. This is the type of a guard-oriented team that can give Cal difficulty (see below):

.Women's Basketball vs Oregon State on 12/5/2024 - Box Score - University of the Pacific

Pacific ended up taking 19 more shots from the field than OSU despite being outrebounded by 14 boards. (see Sela Heide's incredible game in box score).

Pacific lost to Cal in Berkeley by 17 points in 2022-23 but stayed in the game for a while. Their star senior guard, Anaya James, could not be defended well by the Bears as a soph and she busted out for 20 points. Their leading scorer this season, 6-1 senior post, Elizabeth Elliott, is also their leading rebounder. She was unavailable to play in Berkeley. Both of these young ladies are from Inglewood in Southern California. Their third double-digit scorer is a fifth year PG from Texas, Liz Smith. All three of their top offensive threats have scored more than twenty points in games in 2024-25! Their fourth starter, junior Sydney Ward, is also a guard from Texas who likely is their best defender. She stands 6-0 and leads the team in blocked shots with 10. Their fourth leading scorer is a 6-4 center, Lauren Glazier, a transfer from Washington State. She scored 10 points against the tall frontline of the Beavers in the upset. Their sixth man is soph SG, Nyah Lowery, from St Mary's-Stockton.

2024-25 Women's Basketball Roster - University of the Pacific

My prediction for this game is the Bears prevail over the Tigers 80-60! This is predicated on staying in control of their offense throughout the game. However, I can see the possibility of a closer game (w/in 10 points) if Cal doesn't come out with high energy and get off to a strong start in the 1st quarter tomorrow afternoon. The outcome of this game may turn out to be defensive intensity. UOP forces 22 turnovers per contest, but they also commit 20 TOs themselves. If Cal can play formidable defense, they can help offset their own miscues. The one facet of the game that Cal should dominate is rebounding. Michelle Onyiah is capable of having a dominant game vs the Tigers if she can stay on the court. This is going to be an effort game for both teams at 2 pm on Saturday following very physical wins on Thursday night. GO BEARS!

I wanted to see the game in person, but after looking up directions, Stockton is 2 hours from Orinda. I have ESPN PLUS, so I am watching it on my computer. It costs 11.99/month and you can cancel anytime......TX for the review....You were almost perfect predicting last night's score!!! I had Alabama winning the game. Good job!!!

I'm not worried about this matchup.

The Bears are highly motivated to keep winning and avoid "bad losses" which may blemish their resume in the eyes of the committee come Tournament time. Plus, they are on the brink of being ranked.

Fyi. Houston is currently 2-7 and Oregon State is 3-6 (and is 0-4 in away games).

The Tigers have not faced a team like Cal thus far.

I went to a game at UOP back when Courtney Range was playing for us. As I recall it was an easy trip and the gym was nice. Google Maps says 70 minutes from Orinda this morning.

However I'll be at the men's game vs. Stanford today!

It's not too far away. I went to a game there once and since I have nothing on my agenda today, I think I will make the drive. Go Bears!

I went to St. Mary's of Stockton once and it didn't take me 2 hours. More like an hour and 15 minutes coming from Albany Cal.

At intermission, Cal leads by eight points. Bears and Tigers have been sloppy with the ball w/ 14 &15 TOs, respectively. Only Ioanna Krimili is hot shooting with 15 points. Lulu Twidale has lost her three-point shooting touch over the last two games and has one basket. Marta Suarez was invisible until the last couple minutes of the half with one basket + one free throw.

Hopefully, Cal will show more energy in the second half and open up the offense. Charmin Smith employed a 2-3 zone for most of the second quarter which is unusual. The Tigers seemed unprepared for it and only scored 7 points.

"Alabama game hangover." You were on to something with the trap game mention.

I missed half of the game when my computer monitor went BLACK on three separate occasions and I had to reboot each time. Did anyone else using ESPN+ have these difficulties? It's the only time that has happened to me while watching this game today.

Michelle Onyiah's technical foul helped Pacific to cut the lead from 11 down to 6 points. Cal needs her but her lack of self-control certainly gets frustrating at times. Six PFs committed by the fifth-year senior today.

My forecast for today was one with trepidation that the Bears were ripe for a below average performance. UOP outshot Cal in every department and tied us in rebounding 36-36. Fortunately, the Tigers beat the Bears in turnovers. too. I'm glad that we survived with a "W". GO BEARS!

I watched most of the game and so left to do yardwork when we were up by 11 at the end, so didn't see what happened with Michelle's technical. Can anyone explain what happened?

I saw Onyiah draw her fifth PF and have a dialogue with a referee. Evidently, she protested too much and got a T

Yes, I get that, but was she called for a 5th foul, and then argued about it so got a technical?

Sorry, I was at the men's game and only looked at the box score a few times on ESPN

Yes. Called for tech when she argued 5th foul.

I don't blame her for being a bit testy with the refs....per usual the first foul they called on her was a joke....the refs overall were pretty lame, but that's not surprising.

^ it's that kinda paranoid delusional "ima victim" mentality that has hindered michelle's development during her time at cal...when she told me at this fall's 1st football game that her foul problems can be attributed to the refs that's when my thread wuz created to clearly show that's not even close to reality

successful players/programs adapt to the style of games (pac 12/nor cal ticky tacks vs acc physical let them play) called by refs, losers complain & whine with the mistaken belief that they're being targeted for unfair calls

there wuz multiple moving screens by michelle that wuz not called yesterday by the refs, did pacific also get jobbed by the refs??

Also, as a huge fan of Michele I have to say that there is NO excuse for a fifth year senior to even come close to a technical foul based on the time and score of yesterday's game. That sequence became dangerously close to a sudden turnabout in yesterday's final two minutes. C'mon Michele, you should know better.

I don't disagree, but those refs worked my nerves....you're right though. Have to maintain composure despite crummy calls....

I'm sure Charmin had plenty to say to her team, and Michelle, in particular, on the bus ride back to Berkeley. Food for thought, as they say.

I also saw the 6 fouls in the box score and my first thought was a tech arguing her 5th foul. Yes, a player has to have discipline to not make matters worse. However, I can feel her frustration if it was a questionable call (I did not see the game).

HOWEVER, I've said time and again that if Michelle can play composed during the course of a game and not incur the silly fouls, she can have a foul or two to play with at the end.

Her +/- led the team against Pacific. But she only played 22 minutes. I always have fun projecting out her numbers if she played 30+ minutes/game. The numbers are usually crazy good.

There has been signs of improvement in this area at times, but at other times, she reverts back to the silly fouls.

As Cal's only post that has experience (I would add Marta but she tends to play more on the perimeter), she really needs to play with discipline from now on. Most likely there will be times when she reverts back but discipline/composure has to become more the norm than the exception.

The Bears need her on the court if they have NCAA aspirations. <<<Captain Obvious

agree, especially because teams are hunting for fouls against her
