" The transfer portal was a beast last offseason. Several high-level players sought out new programs and plenty of them have already made a significant impact. On3 takes a look at five impact players who transferred into the ACC..."

Kayla Williams included:

Here are her stats updated from those mentioned in article to include yesterdays game:

Last season with the Trojans, Williams averaged 2.6 points and 1.3 rebounds. Now THIS SEASON ->> With the Cal Bears she's averaging 11.9 points, 3.8 rebounds… She's shooting 3s at a 46.5 % clip, 51.5% for 2 pointers, and 70% from the line..

She sure doesn't play like 2.3 points and 1.6 rebounds (did I get that right).

With USC. lol I edited to make clearer. I took the USC stats from the piece I linked to then updated her Cal stats mentioned to include yesterday's game for her accurate season to date stats. :-)

Looking deeper at her stats as a Trojan.

Kayla shot 3-pointers: 27.6% (8/29) clip in 2023-24; compared to 26.9% (21/78) in 2022-23.

She averaged 10.8 minutes in 2023-24; down considerably from the 24.8 minutes averaged in 2022-23.
I guess you'd call that the JuJu Watkins effect.

Charmin has given her new life as a basketball player.

JuJu Watkins took her starting job. She was the defensive stopper the season before for Troy. She shutdown Jayda Curry cold in one matchup that I recall. USC had several scorers, so she did not take many shots.

All I know is that at the beginning of the season the obvious measuring stick for Kayla would be Leilani's performance last season. So far, my guess is that everyone here would agree that she has surpassed it. (No disrespect to Leilani.)

Or at least equaled it.

She was also a graduate student and knowing she wouldn't get much playing at U$C. It was the right time for her to look elsewhere and thank goodness she came here. Do you think coach Lindsay pointed her to CAL?

Maybe, but I think Charmin was clearly focused on the portal and up-to-speed on both what she needed, and the players available to her...Also playing against them in the Pac 12 probably didn't hurt as they've scouted them.... Signing Jayda from the UW was a great get for Cal as well. Perhaps the players also felt comfortable going with a school they were familiar with and had played against?

Charmin also mentioned she needed NIL donations to try to secure a 4 and a 5 since Marta and Michelle are graduating out.

Yes, she is fully engaged in this.

Jayda and Kayla have been great and have played some good ball.

Just for the sake of discussion, I think Kayla has been slightly more consistent than Leilani was in every phase of the game. OTOH, I think part of this can be attributed to all of our returners improving as well. Cart or horse? Either way, it's been a good thing.

Also need NIL to retain our current players, Lulu, Marta, Gabrielle especially

Interesting piece on NIL in WCBB. From a year ago, but provided me a bit of perspective/ understanding as to some of the dynamics and figures at play: https://www.volnation.com/forum/threads/good-article-about-the-current-state-of-nil-in-wbb.351971/

Absolutely. Need NIL $$$ to retain players; need more to be able to bring in players to fill the vacancies after this season. It's going to be a long term process.

Do foreign players get NIL money? Thought I read they didn't.

I'm not sure why they wouldn't? Also NIL can include money they generate on their own via social media.
