In the complicated NET ranking system that is updated daily, Alabama is #17 and we are #28. That system ignores head-to-head results, and just crunches a lot of numbers in a computer. Alabama's wins, in general, have been against stronger opponents. Now that the out-of-conference season is over, we can raise our NET ranking only by beatinsome of the five ACC teams NET currently ranks ahead of us, and by not losing to those ranked below. But my best guess is that we can easily make the tournament, per NET rankings, if we can just finish at least 9-9 in the conference.

A system that places too much emphasis on margin of victory, and also ignores head to head results, is obviously flawed. My guess is that it also ignores temporary injuries.

As long as this team stays healthy and continues to excel on the defensive end, it will be fine. With A. Drousini now giving us some quality minutes, combining that with Marta being ready for the next game, I'm optimistic this team will continue to be tough to beat.

Totally agree. I think that we will go 12-6 or 11-7 in the conference. Our defense is more intense this year, and on offense we are playing a solid inside-out game that forces teams to pick their poison. Our reserves are also now able to hold the line when they are in.

That is optimistic. I think the travel miles will get to us.

Well, don't forget some of our opponents will have to deal with "travel miles" too.

This is precisely what I tell myself during third quarters: If I fear Cal is tired, what about the opposing team who had to play so hard to get within 10 points? Fordham was pretty good on Saturday, but looked wrung-out yesterday.

We have to travel more than the rest of the ACC teams.

One travel advantage the other teams will have is that they can play two games on the West Coast - ourselves and Stanford - on the same weekend without any in-between travel. And some of these ACC sites also have large and rowdy crowds, so we will have to play very tough basketball. But we are now a very tough team with Kayla and Jayda setting a tone of intensity for the entire team.

True, but these are 20-something young adults. Hopefully they can use the time to study, etc. I think it's harder on the coaching staff.

I wonder if the Thursday/Sunday split for ACC games (as opposed to the Pac12 Friday/Sunday) is to allow for a study day? Or am I being naive?

Well we travel from South Carolina to Texas. Not a short trip. not like going from Cal to Stanford.

I seem to recall posting about what Charmin said at one point prior to the season, maybe at the end of season celebration
last year but found this article that explains ACC approach to scheduling:

" So the league has adopted a 2-for-1 approach to putting together the schedule: play two games for every one trip and essentially alternate weekends of playing at home versus on the road. That would have Stanford or Cal playing a pair of road games at neighboring North Carolina schools or in the Eastern time zone on the same trip, or each hosting the same visitor within a four-day span.

Five schools Boston College, Florida State, Miami, N.C. State and Syracuse will have both their men's and women's programs travel to California to play the Cardinal and Bears this season.

"It is what it is and you have to do it," said N.C. State men's coach Kevin Keatts, whose Wolfpack visits Cal on Feb. 5 and then Stanford on Feb. 8.

"We've got to schedule it right. We've got to travel right. We've got to maintain our academics, we've got to eat right and get the proper rest. But it's a tough trip, especially when you haven't done it before."… Paul Brazeau, the league's senior associate commissioner for men's basketball, told the AP the approach was to largely keep those two games on a Wednesday-Saturday schedule, which would build in travel time before and rest between games that were reasonably close together geographically.

The other target was to ensure that teams returning from a cross-country trip were earmarked for a home game on their next game.

"We wanted to make sure it wasn't a Miami-BC (doubleheader) for Stanford and Cal," said Brazeau, referring to the roughly 1,500-mile separation between schools at the northern and southern extremes of the league's eastern footprint…"

"Study"?! Really, Woodacre!

In fact, I imagine most WBB players are at Cal, stay at Cal, and/or transfer to Cal because they take their academic studies seriously. The majority of NCAA WBB players are not going to become WNBA or overseas players, and until the NBA stops drafting teenagers and paying them millions of dollars, most female athletes have to plan for careers that don't include their sport.

When I met Charmin at the Auburn football festivities, we mostly talked not basketball stuff, but when I asked her about some of the teams who would be good in the ACC, she mentioned NC State immediately. So those of you local, circle this one for attendance purposes....wish I could be there!

I believe N C State was in the final four last year. Definitely a treacherous game.
