The Mitty star could not put any weight on her right leg (knee) as she was carried off of the court. Wolizcko was called for a foul of the play and #22 hit both free throws to tie the game at 19-19.

Archbishop Mitty will be competitive in Northern California but will not have any shot at state or national honors (IMO). Of course, I assuming that was a serious injury. final score: Ontario Christian 61, AM 44. Go Monarchs! GO BEARS!

She went down screaming at 5:30 in the second quarter with Mitty up 19-17.

She couldn't put any weight on the knee, and it sure looked like an ACL or something equally serious. My recollection is that Mitty will not release any details about injuries, but if she plays again this year, I would be stunned.

As for the game, it was 42-40 going into the fourth quarter, but one of Ontario Christian's elite freshmen (Tati Griffin) had been in serious foul trouble and so didn't play much until the final eight minutes. Final was 61-44.

Without Woliczko, Mitty is no longer a national power, but still the best in NorCal. That said, they will be vulnerable in postseason to teams like Folsom, say, or even regional powers like Acalanes or San Ramon Valley. It would be a major upset if they don't get to the state title game, but there, it's just like football: The South is just too strong and too deep.

It is always difficult to learn about serious injuries in basketball. With compassion to this young player with her recovery from surgery and returning to play again......a retired nurse and grandmother

As many on here know, women are more likely to get an ACL injury over men. I hope she does well in her recovery...

Archbishop Mitty won their WCAL opener last night at Valley Christian in south San Jose, 84-26.

I watched Archbishop Mitty defeat St Ignatius this afternoon, 60-45. It was the closest WCAL game that the Monarchs have had in quite a while. The score was tied after the 1st quarter, the lead opened up to 8 points by halftime. The margin expanded to 11 and 15 by the end of the 3rd and 4th quarters, respectively. In other words, it was a competitive game for four quarters. Mitty has several good players but no stars without McKenna Wolizcko.

I did not enjoy watching the game like I usually do. I think that this team is going to struggle going forward in 2024-25. SI hit quite a few three-pointers (at least a half dozen) to stay within striking range. The Monarchs are also not as strong of a rebounding team w/out MW.

Mitty's only size was Woliczko, as the frosh post likes to shoot threes and isn't a banger.

So they now

a) Are a team that doesn't really have a post presence; and

b) Has to adjust to playing an entirely different style, on the fly.

There's not a lot of practice time available this time of year, and Mitty has to restructure its entire offense and defense. You lose one of the best players in the nation, who naturally is the fulcrum of your scheme, and radical adjustments have to be made.

I expect Mitty to struggle now but play much better as the season progresses.

Archbishop Mitty has flown to Massachusetts to face #10 Sidwell (DC) & #3 Morris Catholic (NJ) . Sidwell defeated Mitty 54-40 last night and the box score is below. Devyn Cosgriff & Tee McCarthy both failed to score for the Monarchs. Emma Cook only contributed four points. The Monarch post players faired best with frosh Maliya Hunter with 14 points/7 rebounds and her backup, Abi James, with 10 points/5 boards. Both shot high percentages from the floor. Soph transfer Ze'ni Patterson added 8 points w/ 30% FG%. Her twin, Zion, has been promoted to varsity (from the JVs) to replace Wolizcko on the roster.

I have watched a half dozen games now and I don't see how Cosgriff is rated second best junior in NorCal behind Wolizcko. She is athletic and does fundamental skills fine except that she cannot shoot. I would hazzard to guess that she is the lowest scorer in the starting lineup. Devyn has a nice pull-up jumper that hits on occasion and seldom makes her three-point attempts from the left corner. McCarthy has really improved as a soph PG and usually tallies 8-10 points plus several assists/steals.

In Saturday's game, #3 Morris Catholic (NJ) squeezed by #2 AM, 61-57. The Monarchs had the lead in the 4th quarter but couldn't hold on. Two post players once again stepped up for Mitty: Aliyah Hunter and Abbie James.
Negligible outside shooting has been the offensive weakness for the team from San Jose against these nationally ranked teams.

Abby James is 5-9, and playing her inside is an indication that Mitty just doesn't have enough size to compete at this elite level.

There's one other six-footer on the roster, Janaya Williams, but I don't remember her.

Ideally, you have a three-;post rotation, and two of them are 6-2 or taller.

I just watched Archbishop Mitty dominate Sacred Heart Cathedral (78-33) by 45 points. The Monarchs led the Irish by 25 at half playing ten players in rotation. The second half saw HC Sue Phillips play her entire roster of 15. I can see several players really improving now that they have bigger roles on the team.

Frosh Maliya Hunter (6-2) is learning how to play inside. She is rebounding and blocking shots. She already has an accurate jump shot from the free throw line or from three-point land. Soph 5-9 wing Ze'Ni Patterson is deadly accurate on her threes from the corner and is super athletic. Emma Cook (#13) is a 5-10 junior SG that has an array of shots and possesses a high basketball IQ. She is a complete player in all facets of the game. The PG is a 5-7 sophomore, Tee McCarthy, that is very fast and finishes many of her drives to the rim. She also has an excellent jump shot from the free throw line. Devin Cosgriff is a 5-10 junior wing or SF that played solidly today and scored double digits. Their sixth man is Abbie James, a 5-9 SF that can rebound and score inside like a power forward. She is super athletic so I wish that the coach would switch her to a wing spot and develop her three-point shot.

All of these players can execute her full-court press, play defense & pass to their teammates. They all are good shooters. Cosgriff has been erratic most of the season, but she was "on" this evening.

McKenna Woliczko was there in street clothes and sang the AM fight song with her team. I did not see her limp and she was not on crutches. It appears that she is on her way to a rapid recovery.

On a given night, the six players that I itemized above can play with and likely beat any Nor Cal team. I seriously doubt that they can win state without Woliczko. My point is that this group is improving rapidly without their superstar. Go Monarchs!

My daughter wasn't on crutches long at all after her ACL/meniscus tear...I hope this girl has a quick recovery of course, but I wouldn't read a lot into what you see...
