Yesterday's call, and a note to Shocky

I've seen every minute of every game this year. I played basketball through JC in the mid seventies, and I've followed it for 60 years.

I really enjoy watching this year's squad play. Fantastic! As a senior citizen I want to continue to be a basketball fan. But yesterday's atrocious call on Kayla is dragging me down.

I understand that it was necessary in the last few years to insert new rules for players' protection. But honestly, when a referee can't accurately enforce the rule correctly based on it's spirit it becomes frustrating being a fan. The decision to upgrade Kayla's play to a flagrant foul was horrible. What is she supposed to do? Going up for a shot with her hands and ball in the air, was she expected to instantly bring her hands down while letting everything go? I thought maybe I missed something, fortunately I recorded the game and had the opportunity to review the play several times. Those referees should be reprimanded for the ludicrous decision they made. I know it's an old cliche, but their job should be to let the players decide the game. I honestly can't understand it.

Shocky. Please understand that when a poster criticizes a referee, it does not automatically mean the criticism is implying bias by the referee. It appears that you have unilaterally decided that it does. The fact is, bad calls should not be tolerated. And in many occasions the underlying reason can simply be incompetency.
The same incompetency that you frequently (and I must say accurately) apply to the Cal sports marketing department. With all due respect Shocky, for a poster who's comments are more often than not filled with criticism, it's ironic that when it comes to officiating, you take the liberty to try to tell other posters that they are not allowed to be critical. If there is a blatant bad call made by a ref, he/she should be called out for it.

I only hope that I don't have to see another call like the one I saw yesterday. Not because a ref is biased, not because it can decide an outcome, but simply because it's bad for the game.

redless, hear what your saying re: officiating...my point is simply that based upon my conversation with michelle in early september that i wuz shocked to hear her say that her foul problems during her collegiate career are because of bad officiating by the refs which is wildly delusional & not even remotely accurate

and that's why i started the michelle onyiah thread which has a targeted audience of exactly one person, to clearly document every foul this season for which she's been 98% at fault & also documenting the numerous moving screen & body on body fouls that haven't been called

the move to the acc vs the pac 12 has been a good thing for both ugonne & the aggressive cal women's basketball team with its more aggressive style of play for sure but at the end of the day coach charmin is paid half a million bucks to get her players to adapt to whatever style of officiating that the refs are calling

so the whining on this board by a majority of the posters is part of the problem in that this non reality based paranoia is hurting the program in that michelle views herself as a victim instead of working on not moving her body when setting screens (which quite frankly shouldn't even be part of the bears offensive scheme when involving onyiah) & using the fundamentally sound defensive principle of verticality instead of getting her body into opposing shooters when defending around the bucket

ur right the kayla call wuz terrible & that the director of the acc wbb officiating needs to review the game film to evaluate the refs involved

bottom line, my take is that bad calls are part of any game but that the bears are both on both ends of these bad calls

Kayla had the audacity to commit a well-known and thoroughly legal basketball move. It was her responsibility to forecast where the defender stuck their face and NOT shoot the basketball. She should have stopped dribbling, handed the ball to the defender, and said: "you had such great positioning that you deserve the ball and I would hate to have any attempt by me to score result in your injury because you have no responsibility for where you have placed yourself and I must be subconsciously malicious. I'm sorry."

Shocky I agree. And Michelle's problems stem from her own deficiencies. (And like you, I'm a big Michelle fan.) But again, not every complaint here is about a play involving Michelle, and not every complaint automatically comes with the "ref is biased" tag. We're on the same page. Now let's beat NC State!

Blungid, you're description of the play puts mine to shame!

Blungold forgot to mention that Kayla also owes SMU a notarized written apology.
