I predict that Cal will squeak out a victory, 75-72, over arch-rival Stanford in Palo Alto tomorrow night. The Bears have lost to the Cardinal ten consecutive seasons in Maples Pavillion. Cal has not swept the season series from Stanford in forty years.

Stanford has only lost once in ten games this season at home. They will not be easy to beat there. The Cardinal also was embarrassed by the Bears in Berkeley in a 20-point loss and will want revenge. Their current lineup has two new underclassmen as starters now.

Several stats suggest that this should be a close game. Both teams score 75 points per game. Both grab approximately 40 rebounds per contest. Both lineups are loaded with three-point shooters. Cal averages 9.6 to Stanford's 8.4 treys. In Berkeley, the Bears went off for 18 three-point baskets to the Cardinal's 9.

The reason that I like Cal's chances is that Stanford does not cause many turnovers. They have forced a dozen per game on average. In the Bear's blowout win earlier this season, the Cardinal only caused nine TOs. None of the Cal starters had more than 2. The Bears also dominated the assists category with 20 to the Cardinal's 10. Cal outrebounded Stanford, too, 43-38, which is a rare occurrence. Have the Bears had single digit turnovers in any other games this year?

The one new factor that the Cal defense needs to prepare for is the emergence of Santa Clara junior transfer shooting guard, Tess Heal. The Aussie averaged 20 points per game for the Broncos. She seemed reluctant to take many shots early this season and was trying to find her role and fit in. She now is the team's instant offense sixth "man". The reason that Stanford defeated Wake Forest was Tess Heal. She led the team in scoring with 24 points. Heal was "on fire", hitting six consecutive treys. The team wants her to shoot now. Tess started the game at Cal and only accounted for two points. I can almost guarantee that the Aussie will want to make a statement tomorrow night.

Well then I would say, if Heal is the first player off their bench to give them "instant offense", I look forward to Jayda Noble coming off the bench to give us "instant defense."

"Cal has not swept the season series from Stanford in over 40 years."

Last time was the 1981-82 season, winning both games. Then won single games next 3 seasons, for 5 in a row.

Ccajon2-Stanford's website states that the last season sweep occured in1985. Check it out under "it's been a while".

Stanford doesn't the dominant bigs nor the elite slasher

They still have very good shooters and are very well coached

Stanford plays a straight up defensive, not an aggressive one

Cal wins

Thanks, Schroeder. I always appreciate these riffs.

One thing that worries me about Stanford's defense is that late in the previous game they went to a full court press and it was effective...but too late. If they start that earlier tonight...

ESPN Betting Line has Stanford favored by 1.5 pts, down from 3.5 pts. Over/under is 141.5

Zero issues with handling Stanford D so far. We are getting inside, driving into the paint. Up 12-9

at first media timeout, Cal leads 12-9 on 6 from Suarez and 4 from Onyiah. But, Ackerman is already in for Onyiah, when Onyiah has no fouls. It feels like a timed replacement - although I thought Abigor was the usual initial replacement for Onyiah.
Is there some issue with Onyiah?

Never mind about Onyiah. She's back in.
Odd that Murphy does not know that Ackerman is playing only limited minutes due to health issues.

20-9. Everything clicking for us so far.

With 2 minutes to go in first, Onyiah gets her second foul.
Cal has attempted only one three pointer but leads 20-9.

Ugh, and now Suarez has two fouls!

After one, Cal 23 Furd 13. Cal shooting 69%.
And.... Cal as not made a three point shot. 0-3. Has Cal had a quarter without a made three this year?

But, foul trouble could be an issue. Curious that Abigor has not seen the floor as yet.
With Suarez and Onyiah with 2 fouls each, and Ackerman limited, I would think Abigor would be getting more minutes.

The Bears are getting S------- frazzled, and that's important. BearBloke still feeling poorly, so we're eating sushi and drinking sake in front of the laptop. (I envy the fans who are at Maple; holler for us, please.)

Perfect 1st quarter for Cal! Offensive was incredible (69% shooting) but zero threes. Also, two fouls charged on Onyiah & Suarez.

Is Krimilli playing tonight? I didn't see her on the bench..... I hope she is playing. Watching on my Chromebook, and it's a little dark....

Loving Ackerman's aggressiveness. Always boxing out, fighting for every 50/50 ball.

Maul and Donez have seen the floor. No Abigor - so I presume there is some issue there

All she had to do was pass back to the screener for an uncontested lay up though...

Cal leads at half 41-31 - with Suarez and Onyiah not playing the second quarter at all.
Without them, Cal did push the lead out to 14 before it ended with a 10 point lead.
And Cal only 2-10 from deep - and it does not seem possible that that would continue.

And, Abigor did make an appearance and had a sweet hook shot.

Aside: Cal with 8 turnovers leading to 9 Cardinal points. Furd with 10 leading to 13 Bear points.

Although fouls are roughly even (Cal with 10 and Furd with 11), there is a free throw disparity - Furd is 10-10 and Cal is 5-6.

Go Bears!

The second period was an 18-18 tie. Cal played without it two low post scorers & rebounders but did not lose their margin of ten points. Cloe Clardy has scored almost half (14-31) of Stanford's points. The Bears need to play better defense against the Cardinal soph.

Both teams have several players each with two fouls. Bears have made 2-10 treys with the Cardina is 1-7. Both teams are going to warm up in the second half most likely. Hopefully, the Cal starting five can stay on the floor more and play well. GO BEARS!

Suarez drained that from the Golden Gate Bridge. 51-35 lead
