Ugh- that horrible missed free throw bounces way out and UNC gets the three - 45-40.

Krimili uncharacteristically makes only 2 of 4 free throws. Then an awful turnover on the inbounds - but Bears do respond with a defensive stop. However, the quick push back up the court comes to naught.

Suarez with an offensive foul - that actually seemed a lot closer to a block than Suarez' normal offensive charges.
Good defense followed by a Twidale open miss from the free throw line. UNC seemed to sag off of her giving her that shot - something that Twidale previously would have made UNC pay for such a move.
Suarez with 4 after several Cal close in misses (2 by Krimili on one series).

Cal is not in the same league as either UNC or Duke. When we face a top defensive team like those two, the Bears cannot run their offense and hit threes. Kayla Williams cannot get a shot off and Lulu Twidale was 1-9 with 5 turnovers. I stated that North Carolina wins every time when they hold their opponents to less than sixty points. The Tar Heels added the Bears as their 19th victim out of 23 games.
Michelle Onyiah got kneed by a guard while setting a screen and acted like she suffered a broken leg. The only Bears that could score against that defense were Krimili, Onyiah & Suarez. Twidale & Williams each made a single basket. All the UNC players are well-rounded players. None are one dimensional that can play defense but cannot score. Tar Heel soph guard Kelly was 7-15 for 16 points and their 17-year-old frosh had 10 points. Charmin Smith kept putting lineups out there that had two or three limited offensive players that are not viable threats now. Maybe the freshmen will improve...

North Carolina was the better team. If we play ten times they probably win seven. Their defense was stifling -- best I've seen in a long time -- and they dominated the boards. Poor Lulu had a really bad night but then again so did most of our players and again a lot of that is on a superior opponent. On the bright side it was wonderful to see so many people at Haas. Hope they come back. May this be our only home loss of the season.

A very tough defensive team. They guarded us closely and there were no weaknesses to exploit.
Early in the game, UNC got away with some push offs (UNC ball handler pushing off with the free hand extended - at least 4 times) and the UNC center repeatedly was extending her forearm forcefully into the Cal defender's back. Those are usually called. However, they weren't and it kind of set the tone. UNC was able to play their game without fearing foul trouble.
Cal played frustrated and this played into UNC's hands.
Another point is Cal's screens were ineffective too often. There's timing and execution but most importantly the screener and the ball handler have to create the correct angle for the screen to gain an advantage. When Cal did this and the ball handler was able to break the paint, it led to layups. This is how Michelle got off to a good 1st half.
But...too often, UNC was able to stay in front but for some reason Cal either forced a drive into trouble or stopped when I thought maybe the right play was to bring it out and try again.
Also, Cal was not moving without the ball, leading to over dribbling - this allows the defense to rest and gives them the advantage. It may be tiring, but you have to move off the ball to create openings.
In the end, Lulu and Marta going 5-24 between might have been the difference. If even one of them is efficient, the game is probably within one possession; also, Kayla didn't look to score that often. 3 FGAs? Not sure if that was the game plan.

The box score says 2,886 in attendance. And hey, I know one of the referees. She also officiated one of Duke's games in their Las Vegas trip right before Thanksgiving (either against Kansas State or Oklahoma).
I agree about the NC defense - they gave us very few good looks. I think that was the difference in the game.
One thing puzzled me. We tried having Jayda defend Maria Gakdeng and it was a disaster, like 3 fouls in 30 seconds. Jayda can defend 4 positions but center is not among them. Then we tried it again! IMHO Gabrielle did much better with that.

Not only was the attendance respectable but the fans were loud. Great to see good support!
