I missed the detail that is was Va Tech's senior day. So that probably gave their intensity a bump.
When Michelle only plays 13 minutes, Cal's chances for victory decrease immensely. Just the fact she's on the floor make opposing offenses know there's presence in the paint.
If she's not on the court, there's no fear factor and the opposing offense knows if they can get by the first defender, they have options.
Except for Kayla, I don't really see any of the other starters keeping their player in front of them consistently.
If I'm the opposing team and don't see Michelle on the court defensively? I feel like I'm getting a quality opportunity every time down the court.
Conversely, if I'm the opposing team and Michelle is not on the court, I know I can extend on Cal's shooters without having to pay for it in the paint (again on a consistent basis).
Not to put this defeat all on Michelle but her missing due to foul trouble puts this team in a bad position on both sides of the court.
And she had 8 points and 3 rebounds when she WAS on the court. Project that to 26 minutes and Cal wins the game.
I also like your post. Me personally, I am a bit over the the "if's and but's" regarding Michelle. "Staying on the court" isn't just a mindset, it's a skillset. She has shown moments of greatness, and generally is a good player, no question, but I think she just isn't the elite player we want her to be. Not to be too micro about this, but her last foul was just awful movement and positioning on her part, let alone that she had 4 fouls and had to be adjusting accordingly.
I also am not trying to hang too much of this on her, and she seems like an incredible representative of the University of California.
