The ACC announced their end-of-year honors today.

Ioanna Krimili made the All-ACC Second Team, and Charmin Smith finished third in votes for Coach of the Year.

Cal's website already has an article about Krimili:

Quote:

The native of Heraklion, Greece, is the nation's active leader in career games with at least five made 3-pointers (28) and total 3-pointers (431). Her career total ranks ninth on the NCAA's all-time career list. This season she also surpassed 2,500 career points making her just the sixth player in women's college basketball history to have at least 400 3-pointers and 2,500 points.

Predicted to finish 14th. Finished 7th. Finished with a .667 winning percentage in a Power 4 Conference. Should have been unanimous Coach of the Year. NC State was predicted for 2nd...Cal beat them. Notre Dame was predicted for first. Didn't live up to expectations.

Totally agree.

Guess they didn't want to reward the "conference rookie".

Jayda Curry earned 1st team (15 players) honors. I was surprised that she was voted in.

15 Players on the First Team? That would be hard to play defense against...

That Charmin finished third is ridiculous. That she finished third by such a distance I have no words for.

I hope they go into the Post Season with a chip on their shoulder...

The ACC super-structure of media and adjacent properties is so biased against us newbies. It's comfort, it's tradition, and yes its a little favoritism. Maybe as we become more "established" we'll be able to change that tune.

I'm rarely shocked given the current state of the world. I'm genuinely shocked IK was awarded SECOND team, with no other awarded players.

In case you don't follow Marissa Sisk's daily email, Her Hoop Stats, here's what she said today:

Before we move on to a full tournament preview, a few notes:
  • I compared my preseason poll and that of the entire Blue Ribbon panel, to how teams actually finished, Our mutual worst miss was overestimating Miami in year 1 of the Tricia Cullop era. I expected the Hurricanes to finish 11th, a miss of five slots over their 16th-place finish, while the panel overestimated them by eight slots.
    • The panel's second-worst miss was by seven slots, as No. 7 Cal was only expected by the panel to finish 14th. I only missed their slot by one, voting them eighth.
    • My second-worst misses were a quartet of 3-slot misses, as I overestimated Syracuse and underestimated Pitt, Virginia Tech and Virginia.
  • I tracked all season how teams fared going two-plus time zones away. Home teams won an overwhelming 75% of such games, with identical 12-4 records in both the first and second games of those trips. North Carolina, which was perfect in true road games on the season until the rivalry trip up the road to Duke, was the only team to sweep such a road trip.

7-seed RV California (11-6 ACC, 24-7 overall)
Picked 14th in the preseason poll
In its first year in a new conference, the Golden Bears have already improved their overall record by four wins before the postseason even starts. They exceeded expectations, finishing seventh in the ACC after being picked 14th in the preseason poll.
"We knew we were better than that," head coach Charmin Smith said. "I think it's a conference that wasn't really familiar with Cal basketball... We have set goals for ourselves… finishing in the top half of the ACC and positioning ourselves for the NCAA tournament."
As for what's led to her team's success this season, which included sweeping Bay Area foe Stanford for the first time in 39 years and wins against three teams with top-30 HHS ratings, Smith said balance, 3-point shooting and Michelle Onyiah staying on the floor and out of foul trouble.
The Golden Bears are the only team in the country with five players averaging at least 11 points, 2.5 rebounds and half a steal per game, and one of just 10 with four such players (side note: the ACC occupies four of those 10 slots). They are also the only team with two players in the top 10 in the conference in 3-point percentage (min. 150 3PA) in Ioanna Krimili and Lulu Twidale. As for staying out of foul trouble, when Onyiah had four or more fouls, Cal's winning percentage was 64.7%, but when she fouled three or fewer times and Smith could keep her on the floor, it was 92.3%.
Cal will face either Pitt or Virginia, both of whom the Golden Bears defeated this season, by 31 and six, respectively.

Maybe the lack of individual recognition reflects a good thing, our balance of talent. All five of our starters can score 20. All five can play defense. Four of them can hit 5 threes or dish out 5 assists. The two bigs can pull down 10 rebounds. Our team is greater than the sum of our players.

As horrible as this lack of recognition is, my guess is that it can only lead to added motivation for this team moving forward. Go Bears!

Jayda was dealing with a condition(Plantar Fascitis) earlier in the season. She played really well in Feb., and Louisville won more games. She attended a special program in France last summer to learn how to move, avoiding injury to her feet. Don't quote me...this is basically what I read early in this season.

Kelly Gramlich of the ACC Network said she fell in love with Cal...she was teased because she was recently married. There is a good clip of this on Cal WBB Twitter....Feb. 28, 2025....Muffet McGraw said Cal doesn't play well away from home around 3 weeks ago, with no mention of their travel schedule.

In terms of preseason predictions, Charmin said that she thought NC State was going to be very good.

When Cal beat NC State, their coach was very gracious (even humorous) in the postgame presser, I am not disappointed he was voted ACC coach of the year - that team is pretty damned good.

When ND falls short of expectations and their coach gets voted 2nd? Hmmm...

Cal finishes a mere seven spots higher than they were picked...and Charmin is a distant 3rd...that's a foul. Maybe even a flagrant.
