Does losing by less than 10 points to a quad 1 team help our NET?

Good effort, but that stretch by Hildalgo after Cal took the 6-point lead was the difference. Cal couldn't get any clean 3-point looks and then the turnovers returned at a bad time. I like when Cal has Suarez in the post but she can't handle the ball on the perimeter against elite defenses. 17 turnovers in the two games against Notre Dame and several of them were unforced. Hopefully the performance against the Irish can push the Bears off the 8-9 line.

Proud of the effort. No shame in losing by 9 points to a team that pounded you by 39 a month ago.
They really frustrated and clamped down on Krimili.
We really needed Jayda Noble today.
So very glad that Kayla Williams was able to return.

On to the NCAA Tournament!!
Go Bears!!

I think Gabby has a future but not as a starter- at least not for next year if not the next 2 years . She hustles but cannot shoot as well as Onyiah.

I have nothing to say. But thought that I would bump this thread up above the politics thread.

What a shame Jayda Noble could not play today. Her defensive play was needed.
Does anyone know if she is ill? If so, I hope it is not serious , and she has a speedy
recovery......I love how she smiles while playing.....a concerned retired nurse and grandmother.
I worked at the old Cowell student Health Services From 1974 through 1978. It stood where the Haas School of Business is today. I have been a Cal fan since 1973. My former husband is a Cal Grad, class of 1970.

Illness. Maybe flu or a cold. She was sitting at the end of the bench, and you could see it in her face that she was under the weather.

I thought it's amazing that with 28 (!) TOs, Cal was in this game. Against an established power. On a neutral court.

While we all can say "what could have been", you get the one shot and you have to live with the results.

To stay in the game despite the Achilles Heel rearing its ugly head? Pretty interesting, and leads me to believe that no matter what seed Cal gets and no matter where they go, they'll give the opponent all they can handle. They have faced high level competition, have faced the travel adversity and their own weaknesses.

Cal has shown they can control the bad TOs in some games this season but not enough to make me feel confident it won't happen again. Thus, I have to hope they have a good stretch of play in them during the most impactful time of the season. They are fully capable of holding the TOs to 16 or less.

16 or less today and we may be talking about a different result...but alas, no.

The team missed Jayda today but I think the most telling stat today was Io only had 2 3-point FGAs. They need to help get her some open shots.

And even with that, Cal was in the game.

Maybe they can drop to a 10 seed? Might even be better to drop to an 11. <<<most likely won't, right?

But hey, let the chips fall where they may.

Go Bears!

^ teams shoot poorly when they're fatigued & the starting 5 is outta gas, that's just poor coaching as a direct result of the 1st game heavy minutes negatively impacting the notre dame game

in addition to fatigue impacting decision making & physical skills, the lack of fundamentals in passing (one handed flings) are montera middle school coaching level & a key contributor to the 28 turnovers

The problem when you get to this stage in WBB is that so few (maybe 25) teams are good enough to give your team opposition. Yes, the 28 TOs were bad, but I think with most of the teams we play against our players can get away with a lot of passing, drives, picks, etc. that you just don't get off a Notre Dame...They got into so many stupid situations that I am sure they get away with daily, but not against the elites. So a good portion of those TOs were attributed to not having the experience to play against excellence. Much like in college FB that your scout team cannot emulate Marcus Allen. ND was just faster, better and had a great game plan. Did you notice that our 3 shooters had someone in their jerseys outside the line...Was not going to happen...Yet it coulda been.

ND is an elite defense, and size across the roster. They also have a deep bench (our bench scored zero points, their bench scored 9 points. That's the margin right there).

Hidalgo won ACC POY and DPOY and today she showed why. She defended Yo much of the game and shut her down. Offensively she scored an efficient 25 points, which is a lot but also her scoring average.

We played much better than the first matchup.

Let's get back home and rest up for the tournament

Bummer about Jayda. Were Zahra and Kamryn available today?

There's a big difference between the elite and the good -- and it was on display in this game.

Notre Dame has a lot of ways to win, defense being one of them, while Cal has fewer paths. ND's defense had a major, major role in the 28 turnovers, and that's why they won, despite not playing particularly well in other aspects.

That said, great effort by Cal and games like that could easily get the Bears to the Sweet 16.

I think it's been noted for most of the season that if they don't clean up turnovers they will not progress in the tournament. They fit the profile of a team that did just what they did in ACC tourney: one spectacular game where they blow out opponent followed by sloppy game where turnovers cost them the game.

Sadly, I think is what we will see in NCAAs. Sweet Sixteen maybe if they get a decent draw and hold it together for 2 games, but probably just one win. I think from an offense, defense, effort, and cohesion stand point they could be 16 or 8 team--but they just keep throwing the ball away. Literally. Passes to teammates who aren't looking. Lobs into post that have no chance. Over-dribbling in traffic. I love cheering for this team and so these repeated mistakes are very frustrating because it is so correctible and will cost them so dearly.

Oh, and the bench players can not be so passive on offense. There were many times that they had wide open looks and they refused to shoot or would drive right into the defense. I know they aren't our first choice scorers, but when you are on the floor you have to be some kind of a threat and take the gift opportunities.

ND has forced 11 turnovers on #11 Duke at the half

But Duke won, and will play N.C. State in the finals tomorrow at 10, PDT: https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401743784

( I like to think Cal helped tire them out.)
