If this is accurate, then Charmin really has her work cut out.

Bummer about Mafua. I think she has a high ceiling.

With that said...opens up another spot for us. Charmin did a fantastic job in the portal last year.

Here's a stretch of an idea. Olivia Miles, Notre Dame guard, is not declaring for the WNBA but, instead, entering the transfer portal.

Get on the phone, Charmin!!

I agree about Mafua. I would think her playing time was sure to increase this next season. Hmmmm.

Marta is a huge loss

I had a hint Kamryn wasn't happy. Surprising that she's listed as a guard. She liked playing on the perimeter and has a solid 3 point shot but didn't think she was quick/fast enough to play guard

I saw her more as a stretch 4 (who potentially could have earned some of Marta's minutes now that she is leaving

So tough to be a fan with the constant churn of players

A big factor in me liking Michelle and Leilani

Money, winning, playing time, tv exposure, practice facility availability. It's great that getting a solid academic degree no longer gets in the way of these other more important things.

Fear? Cal had a really good recruiting year, and players got recruited over..I think it's a bigger shock if all the younger players stay ..

Some teams are going through extensive departures…Arizona, ASU, Austin Peay, Auburn, Boston College…and that's just the beginning of the alphabet…

Wonder what Gisella Maul is feeling now that Texas is in the final four. she got less playing time here after the transfer.

Wasn't Gisella injured much or all of this year?

I wish we could have kept Kamryn. I don't know if she needs more time to adjust to playing wing at this level or if our incoming freshies are that much better. Maybe her destination will provide a clue.

I never felt Mafua would be a difference-maker at this level. She's not quick enough for the perimeter and not big enough for inside. I will be curious to see where she lands, but I'm guessing mid-major.

The only things that would get Olivia Miles here is a boatload of money and a desire on her part to get a master's from Cal.

PenBear

Do you really get a full master degree or some kind of graduate certificate tailored for athletes? It might be the latter.
stu

I suppose that depends on the program you choose. If you motivation is academic then choose the degree, if your motivation is basketball then choose the certificate.

Kam Mafua is too slow for Div I. She has only one shot and it's the three-pointer. Clay K is correct that she is not quick enough to play on the perimeter and not physical enough to rebound and play inside. It looks as if Charmin's comment about all of the seniors departing was accurate. She needs to match the caliber of some of her portal transfer acquisitions from the last two cycles (seasons) or the Bears will slide back downhill. Charmin has recruited too many players that are one dimensional. Players like Jayda Noble and Lola Donez play solid defense but cannot score. Cal needs to develop at least an eight or nine-player rotation to be competitive with other good teams. Last season, Abigor and Noble gave good minutes. Gabrielle needs to develop more of an offensive game, but her defense and rebounding showed good effort. Gisell Maul did not display intensity when she played for the most part, but she may have been hindered by an injury. Her Texas high school credentials were quite impressive.

Mafua did have a small sample size of bad shooting percentages - 32.1% from the field,. 21.1% from three, and 28.6% from the line. But we also have to hope that Donez can significantly improve her own percentages - 17.9% from the field, 5.6% from three, and 50.0% from the line.

Not all grad masters programs here are accessible without very high GPA's. Best opportunities are education and public health. But we do seem to have a fair number of good certificate programs.

The talent pool is much shallower on the women's side, for a variety of reasons, which means the competition for ACC-level players is intense.

And Marta, who is an ACC-level player, voting with her feet tells us she doesn't believe a) Cal will have a competitive roster; b) Cal can't pay her; c) she can find a better overall situation -- or all three.

Suarez can help a very good team coming off the bench, if she's willing to do that. She's not really a starter at the Sweet 16 level, though.

Looks like some Louisville players are voting with their feet also

Or "D", she doesn't like the academic demands and the vibe of being at Cal.

I can't speak to the academics, but I did chat with her during last year's banquet and she was effusive about the difference in vibe and energy from Tennessee

that's great to hear...
Players leave, we see that as the new reality. Players leave good programs and good coaches, there is also that.

The "wanting to play for a better team" next year is easier said than done. No one here knows what Cal will look like, except they will be younger no matter how you slice it. Fine, I'm as glass half full about the Cal women's hoops as most of the great fans here, but yeah, okay, they aren't going to be Elite 8 next year. But if looking for next season success is a big factor, Marta has to find a team that is pretty loaded, but one that has playing time for her....
It can't be for more dollars right?

On Sirius Channel 84, the NCAA channel, they were interviewing one of the March Madness analysts, and he said that the ACC is unsustainable due to travel. He said the Georgia Tech baseball coach was retiring this year, citing both the craziness of the Portal plus the travel: "We are playing Stanford this weekend. We are flying on Thursday, taking the red eye Sunday night." The analyst then specifically cited Cal and Stanford...he said for football it's not as bad, but for basketball "these student athletes are flying every other week, for up to a week. When do they get to be on campus? When do they get to be a student?" So perhaps that challenge in simply getting a chance to be a college kid is a factor?

Not sure I get the pointing out of the ACC...last time I looked, SC and UCLA have their fair share of opponents in the Eastern time zone.
But sure, there are schools with less travel....

Oh, I get it. Sports media is full of guys who want Cal and Stanford athletics to (quoting the retired UNC soccer coach) "die on the vine". They don't have the same animosity toward USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.

I think there is also a deference to the Big 10 too, so yeah. I'm not a "blame media" guy...but would say an overall respect within the industry as a whole...

That's the second Georgia Tech coach to retire this year. WBB Coach, Nell Fortner, announced her retirement earlier this week.

Isn't Atlanta a major airline hub? Just saying.

So let's just use Marta Suarez as an example ...

1) She's going to have a pro career in Europe, so she wants to come out of college as polished and ready as possible. If she feels a different program will help her improve, then she'll move on.

2) As with anyone, she will listen to money. If a Big 10 school offers her $100,000 and Cal offers $50,000, the choice is obvious.

3) Players like to win and play with other good players. Lulu is a good player. What other good players are guaranteed to be on the Cal roster next year? Presumably Marta can find a team with more returning talent.

4) Facilities. Yes, a practice gym. And a modern arena with good crowds would be nice too.

These are the hurdles Charmin and a large number of other P4 coaches must overcome. And there's not enough talent to go around.

If Tess Heal didn;'t play the same position as Puff, she would be a great get, but it makes little sense to have two point guards, a shooting guard and no inside depth. Cal's limited money has to go to fours and fives, it would seem.

In the short run, Charmin needs to get lucky. In the long run, Cal's football team needs to start winning lots of games so the athletic department and the collective have more money available for players and facilities.

This is key and I think the new chancellor is fully aware of this hence some of the changes with the football team. I think they'd like to move on from both Knowlton and Wilcox but we're stuck with them in the short term. I believe there's hope for football and thus for other programs like women's bballl if we can survive another year.

First step for Marta must be to admit that she has a TO problem. One look at film of her recent tournament game and a lot of good schools will not want to take the chance.

I don't understand how she is eligible for NiL money.
