It appears that Gaby is no longer with the team. Her picture is gone from the roster on Calbears.com. It was there about a month ago. So perhaps she did not enroll for the Fall semester.

Looking at the various team activities/practice videos of late, I don't recall seeing her in any of them.

Does anybody have any further update on this situation?

I was looking forward to seeing her play with this new group of Bears.

Nothing new from here. Just confirming your observation.

Cal had the 23rd rated recruit class of four freshmen for 2024-25. Only one of the four now remains.

The Bears have a thirteen-player roster made up of ten guards/wings plus three front-court athletes. If Cal suffers an injury or foul trouble with any of those three, the team will likely be in major difficulty with interior defense and rebounding! GO BEARS!

If you'll excuse me being so blunt: this sucks! We really needed her for this coming season. A quick google search gives no indication of what happened. The only social media account of hers I could find was Instagram and she hasn't updated that since March. We're left to speculate and that's never good.

I'm hoping that Coach Smith might address this situation during the open practice on October 11. Then again, it might be a privacy issue.

In many ways, this feels like the worse player you could lose given our roster. Now we sit back and wait for more news. Hope everything's okay with Gabi.

In terms of positional size? You could be right.

Here's a list of every ACC player in the 2025-26 season who is 6-2 or taller. (You may recall I did this last year too. I chose that height because I felt anyone at least that tall would most likely be a frontcourt player.)

Each school name has a link to the most recent roster. I group the players in the following order: returners, incoming transfers, freshmen. I used Basketball Reference for the minutes-per-game stats.

Boston College

6-2 sophomore Kiera Edmonds (redshirted; 21.7 mpg at Wagner 2023-24)

6-3 freshman Kennedy Hall
6-3 freshman Eleanor Trout
6-2 freshman Kayla Rolph

California

6-3 sophomore Gabrielle Abigor (8.1 mpg)

6-5 grad Sakima Walker (7.5 mpg at South Carolina)

Clemson

6-2 sophomore Morgan Miller (1.7 mpg)

If she had left through the portal, we would have at least had a chance to recruit somebody else. She may have had some personal issues come up, but leaving with this timing is the worst way to go out.

i wonder if it is because the most playing time will be Sakima and then either Langarita or she would be the 3rd option?
kc1121
How long do you want to ignore this user?
doubt it. Langarita is tall but they have different playing styles/roles.plus can she be healthy most of the season.

Well, Claudia and Sakima are both grad students with one year of eligibility remaining. Claudia has been out a year so likely a bit rusty. Gaby, a sophomore, played behind Michelle last season so she knows her role as a back-up. And she proved herself last season, so I'm guessing more playing time was coming her way this season.

So, to answer your question, I don't think that was a primary reason for her departure.

Whatever the reason, I only hope that she's ok. Best wishes to her going forward. Enjoyed watching her on the court.

Oh no. I didn't see any injury during the season but perhaps it's not an injury

Hope she is okay and recovers fully

A medical retirement qualifies a player for continued tuition and expense support at their school as well as for continued medical insurance coverage. So, hopefully, she will stay at Cal for her degree. Would also be great to see her out there rooting for the team.

I am hoping this is the case. I remember Tierra Rogers' situation and was so happy to see her continue at Cal, be a part of the "team" and get her degree. I saw her at Haas last season too, a Bear for life.

I wrote to GM Williams. She replied that Abigor has medically retired and that there will be a short post about her later this week.
