My prediction: Cal 75, San Jose State 50.
The Spartans have a first time, first year head coach. The only competitive game that SJS has played was their last one last Thursday night when the lost at home to St Mary's, 58-53. The other six losses were by double-digits. On the season, they have been outscored by 16.3 points per game (71.9-55.6). Spartans are a great matchup for the Bears. They only have one tall player that is a 6-4 freshman center from Spain. On average, they have been outrebounded by 5 boards per contest. Cal should dominate inside play. Their offense has turned the ball over approximately 20x per game (which includes 10.9 steals). The Spartan defense has yielded 8 three- pointers per game.

San Jose State has three offensive threats. I will quickly review their starting lineup. Their best overall player is #15, a 6-1 soph wing, Maya Anderson, from Canada. She's a NIL quality player. She averages 12 points & 6 rebounds per game. She is #2 in steals (10) and second in treys made (10). Their PG is 5-7 junior, Rylei Waugh. She averages three assists per game. Waugh contributes 11 points and 5.9 boards. She is tops in steals w/12! The starting SG is 5-9 junior Allie Cummins. She scores 9 points and has the most made threes (13).

The other two starters are 5-10 senior SG Amira Brown. This player leads the team in rebounds with 6.3 and adds 7 points per game. The fifth is their frosh 6-4 center, Gabriela Pato. She hardly played early on but has started the last couple of games. Her playing time has been increasing but she has seen the court only 16.5 minutes on average. Pato's stats are steading improving: 6 points & 4 boards per game.. Gabriela provides a shot blocking dimension that SJS needs and has provided 9 shot blocks. The sixth "man" is a fellow freshman import from Spain, a 5-10 shooting guard, Carla Fuster, that has averaged 3.1 ppg. She also has 5 three-pointers.

Cal has only reached 70 points twice in nine games. I would suggest that splitting post minutes between Sakima Walker (25) and Naya Ojukwu (15) would add another double-figure scorer to the offense. I would also suggest that wing Gisella Maul joins the starting lineup and have frosh PG, Puff Morris, come off of the bench.

I hope Cal doesn't take this victory for granted. I can still remember when the Spartans upset the Bears in Berkeley. It was one of the most upsetting losses ever. Tomorrow is Pearl Harbor Day-be prepared for anything. GO BEARS!

Hard to believe, but with the Spartans ranked #283 in the NET, we might actually drop in the rankings ourselves unless we have a high scoring margin win on our home floor. Under this system, we have to pour it on.

That being the case let's hit triple figures.

Everyone played in the first quarter except Naya Ojukwu. I don't see her (#7) on the bench. Is she there?
Two freshmen guards are quick but turn the ball over constantly. They also have not displayed that they can shoot other than making a layup

Naya has made herself known in the 2nd quarter. She played five minutes and tallied 9 points! The only shot that she missed was a mid-air offensive rebound that went down and came out. Ojukwu missed two free throws, too. If the coach doesn't give her more minutes, there's something wrong. She is super aggressive and does get too many fouls. Although I don't think her second foul should have been called. Maya Anderson fell into her and the ref called blocking. If you can't tell, she already is my favorite player on the team.

Gisella Maul only played four minutes, too. Miracle Sheppard returned to the bench but she is barely moving. I doubt that she'll see any more action today.

She sprained her ankle before so easy to re-sprain it

Hopefully we can rest her a few games

Claudia and Naya got a little extra attention from the training staff just now . Both are putting on back belts

Cal was clicking on all cylinders in the 3rd quarter, 28-12!

Bears play everybody and win by 50! I predicted a 25-point victory. Our two posts, Walker & Ojukwu, rang up 16 & 19, respectively. Charmin Smith seems to finally be getting the idea. Cal grabs 55 rebounds and shares the ball for 20 assists. GO BEARS!

Nothing really to see here...except we get to see players get minutes that most likely won't most of the time.

That and games like this scare me because of injuries...and sure enough, Mjiracle turns an ankle. Good sign is she rebounded for the team during 2nd half warmups...and she was walking on it. So doesn't seem to be significant but you never know until the next day.

Just two observations: 1) Puff and Naya...got to knock down the FTs; 2) Claudia will play sparingly (most likely due to the back?) and Naya has to stay out of foul trouble.

Oops. That's three. Oh well.

Given some of the teams we're going to be seeing at Haas come January I was happy to watch us take on a totally hapless Spartan squad (they were awful). With the game so well in hand I sometimes find myself rooting for us to win by a certain amount or hold our opposition to a certain score or for us to reach a particular score. Today I was rooting for a fifty point margin and because of that the closing seconds were dramatic indeed as Naya's three-point play and a subsequent steal secured the margin. Otherwise my main takeaway is hoping that Mjacle is okay. Anyone think we'll beat Duke by 50?

With the win certain I was just enjoying good plays by both teams. For example, SJSU hit some difficult threes in the 2nd half but they didn't affect the outcome.

I'm concerned about our injuries. Claudia tweaked her back and didn't return. Gisella turned an ankle and did return, though it looked like it was bothering her. And we really need Mjracle at full strength, hope her ankle heals up.

I was impressed with Lola's defense, rebounding, and general hustle. Nice to see all of our guards getting rebounds. Also Grace got 4 steals in 18 minutes.

Good post. I liked watching the deep bench getting good prime time PT. Agree Lola played great defense and a few hustle rebounds

In the postgame press conference posted on Calbears.com, Charmin was asked about Mjracle.

She responded by saying "I expect her to be fine."

Up 30, there was really no need for her to play in the second half.

Fun game today. Everybody got some minutes. At one point in the 4th quarter, we had three freshmen on the floor. Great to see them get some playing time.

california golden bears 92
san jose spartans 52

this is a wildly entertaining team (7-3) whose upside is only limited by turnovers (showing improvement the last 2 games, only 12 this afternoon) & the coaching failure to play 2 bigs at the same time with relentless naya ojuwku (19 points in 15 minutes, averaging under 9 minutes per game which is coaching malpractice) & sakima walker (16 points in 19 minutes)...both should be STARTING (each with 30+ mpg) with sakima at the 5 and naya sliding to the 4 to give the bears a strong rebounding/interior d presence

last season coach smith also didn't play her 2 bigs at the same time which basically wasted the talents of gabby abigor by not giving her big minutes at the 5 which would've allowed +1 athletic michelle onyiah to slide to the 4 which would've facilitated her mitigating her fouling propensity by not having to defend opposing teams physical 5s

today's attendance: 1150

men's attendance last game at haas pavilion: 2688

if chancellor lyons allows the current co athletic director ****tards jay & jenny to hire the next marketing director that will be a DEATH SENTENCE for the hoops programs

The Idaho Vandals (8-2) visit Cal on Wednesday night. This should be a competitive game based upon my preliminary investigation. I hope that the Bears are at full health then. "All hands-on deck!"

The cost of playing two posts would be poorer ballhandling, passing, and spacing for perimeter shooting and drives.

stu, rebounding and a strong interior d is what wins basketball games against nationally ranked teams, playing naya 9.8 mpg is coaching malpractice

the coach smith era in berkeley has been punctuated by beating mid majors & losing most of the time to elite teams and failing to innovate in clutch moments such as the last second uncontested layup at missouri which would've been a ncca tournament resume building victory

the BEST STARTING LINE UP for competing against nationally ranked teams is sakima at the 5, naya at the 4, taylor at the 3 (she is too short to defend elite acc 4s), lulu as the shooting 2 (her natural position) & mjracle at the 1 with puff & gisella as the first 2 subs off the bench with lola as the glue 8th in the playing rotation

the current lineup is gonna get DESTROYED on the boards by duke, stanford, etc just like jennifer simon o'neil (who enabled mckeever for years to abuse the suicidal women's swimmers) is DESTROYING gameday attendance in her abject failure to make any inroad marketing connections with students & a much needed younger fanbase

It would be nice to get some clarity on Naya's health situation. She played 15 minutes yesterday which might have been the most she's played all season. The way she's performing, if she can go at least 15 based on her health then she should be getting at least that many at the very minimum.

The scoring margin wipeout of SJSU has moved us up to #63 in the NET rankings. Unfortunately, that is the approach you have to take with weaker teams.

NET gives a small boost for 10+ wins, but a 40 point win is no better than a 10 point win by itself

Offensive and defensive efficiency is also a factor (besides quality of opponent and location which are biggest factors)

Two years ago we had a huge drop in NET ranking after a huge scoring margin loss to Utah so I presumed that was still part of the system. How then did we rise by 9 places beating a very poor team on our home court?

Actually, I think a 40 (or 50) point win does help, at least in women's:
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/basketball/d1/women/D1WBB_NETFAQ.pdf
Perhaps in men's basketball the point differential is capped, just like there are more Quadrant 1 teams in Men's than in women's. But Cal rose from 76th to 63rd by beating by 50 points a team (SJS) that dropped from 283 to 305.

I suppose that it is also possible that a combined high offensive efficiency/high defensive efficiency rating automatically corresponds with a high scoring margin. But I am going to stop trying to figure it out. The computer has me beat.
