I can't wait to see tomorrow night's game. On paper, Idaho has superior stats in every category. However, they have yet to face a Power 4 conference foe. The Vandals average approximately 85 points per game. In their ten games, they have put up scores in the eighties and nineties in all but two encounters. Their lowest offensive scoring output this season has been 76 points twice.

Their two defeats came at UC Davis, 89-76, and at home in Moscow, ID, at the hands of Oral Roberts, 92-89.
The Aggies hit 14 of 30 three pointers to register that win. Idaho's star, Debora dos Santos, went off in the latter matchup and produced in 21 minutes, 22 points & 15 rebounds but to no avail.

ESPN'S Bracketology has the Vandals projected as a 13th seed for this year's NCAA Tournament. I would say that Cal matches up well versus Idaho. The only problem might be whether or not the Bears have a strong offensive showing in this particular contest.

2025-26 Women's Basketball Roster - University of Idaho Athletics

The Idaho Vandals lead the Big Sky Conference in almost everything. The are tops in assists per game with 15.3. (Cal checks in w/ 16.2). They average 84.9 points on 45.2 FG%. The Vandals are #1 in point margin at 17.3 ppg. Idaho has seven players that hit at least 33% of their three-point attempts for a collective 7.5 treys per game. (Cal connects on 7.3).

Rebounding is this team's strength. In the three close battles that they've had, their opponents either outrebounded them or were very close. Idaho leads the Big Sky in total rebounds (49.2/g), offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds & rebound margin (+ 12.8/g). The Bears are going to have to be physical Wednesday to stop easy second chance baskets.

Art Moreira is in his second year as Idaho's HC. He implements an 8-9 player rotation. The Vandals have six proficient guards that run the show but what has enabled them to take the next step is the two USF posts that transferred. Both are from Brazil and are redshirt seniors.

IMO, Charmin Smith needs to decide on a couple critical matchups. Their center is 6-5 Lorena Barbosa. She starts and plays 17.4 mpg. She averages 12.0 points and 4.8 boards per night. The Vandals sixth "man" is their best player, Debora dos Santos. She is a sturdy 6-0 PF that is difficult to move off of the block. She missed their last game, so I don't know the status of her health for tomorrow. Dos Santos (#9) has only played 12.9 minutes and yet contributes 11.1 points to the offense and 7.4 rebounds. Last season in the WCC, she averaged a double-double (15.3 points and 10.6 rebounds). The only Cal players that seem suited to battle this dynamic duo down low are obviously 6-5 Sakima Walker & 6-1 Naya Ojukwu.

I will quickly provide an overview of the backcourt threats that Idaho possesses. Their starting PG is 5-8 junior Hope Hassman (#4). She provides 4.2 assists and 14.1 points per game. Hassman is a deadly shooter. She is second in threes (14) and hits an unbelievable 92.6% of her free throws. Their #2 offensive player is 5-11 SR, Kyra Gardner (#3), a transfer SG from Washington State. She adds 13.0 points & 6.2 boards on average. Kyra is a dangerous three-point threat with 23! She also is the Vandal's defensive stopper. Gardner is top in steals w/ 2.5 per game and tied for the best in shot blocks with 9. Another productive guard is Ana Pinheiro from Portugal. She's a 6-0 soph combo guard that averages 8.7 points plus 5.1 boards. She is tied w/ her backcourt mate with 9 shot blocks and is third in steals. The fourth guard is 5-8 soph PG, Ella Uriarte, from Folsom HS.
She contributes 6.4 points to the mix.

Idaho has lots of depth and three players are tied for the most minutes at approximately 25. Two more substitute guards are 5-6 senior PG Mary McMorris. She typically puts up 6.4 points while being 2nd on the team in assists and steals. Ana Beatriz da Silva is another Brazilian. She is a 5-11 soph SG that helps w/ 6.5 points & 5 rebounds per game. The final sub in Sarah Brans, a 6-1 SR SF from Monte Vista High in Danville.

My optimistic prediction is that Cal will prevail over Idaho, 77-75. GO BEARS!

An important contest for Naya to play as many minutes as possible. I would predict a higher victory margin for us if she can extend her time on the court. Also need to see if Sheppard is ready to go.

Davis loss:

Aggies were 14-30 in 3-pointers; compared to 7-24 for the Vandals.
Davis outscored them in the 4th quarter, 24-13.

Oral Roberts loss:

ORU was 9-22 from 3; compared to 3-20 for the Vandals.
ORU outscored the Vandals, 36-23, in 4th quarter. Other quarters for ORU (18, 20,18)

See a pattern here?
Maybe their high-scoring offense can be defended, and they seem to get tired in the 4th quarter.

Get ready Lulu, Taylor, Mjracle and Puff for those 3-pointers!!

This game should tell us a lot about this team. An argument can be made that if we had played Missouri at home we would have got the W. Playing tonight's game at home, this is the type of matchup that we should be expected to win if we're going to make any significant noise this season. And yes, our health is a big factor. Let's hope that Mjracle and Naya are able to give us maximum minutes, it might be the deciding factor.

I saw the team bus outside, with Idaho plates. Their last game was in Denver and their next is Utah. Road trip?

Well S71 warned us how good they are

This team is skilled, experienced, deep and well coached

After one Idaho has ZERO fouls?

Puff took a few ill-advised shots. Pace better after we subbed in Gisella, Lola and Naya.

Idaho putting on a clinic in ball movement. We are lucky that they are not good shooters.,I think that their coach will likely be moving up to a higher-level job in the future.

The Vandals play at such a pace…you can see why they've run up high point totals against teams that are not as good defensively as Cal.

Impressed with Idaho. I'd have to imagine they're a favorite to win the Big Sky.

Puff with ice nails the three before half - but, Idaho then runs right past her to get the final bucket of the half. Cal had a brief 8 point lead, but hold the lead at half.

I wouldn't say our defense looks that good tonight. Idaho isn't getting many assists but they're beating us off the dribble. Our offense is moving the ball but I'd like to see more speed.

All by bus? That's tough.

We are playing at high speed and only have 4 turnovers. Idaho averages 85 points and are on pace for 62. I'm impressed.

Their best player, #9 Debora dos Santos, who averages a double-double is not playing. Vandals are still outrebounding Cal 21-16. Five of their guards have 5 or 6 points at intermission so I'm worried that they might start scoring from the outside like they're capable of in the second half. Their guards are primarily making layups against Sheppard, Twidale, Morris & Donez.

Sheppard is having a tough offensive game, too. Barnes has disappeared from the offense. Thank goodness that Gisella Maul and Naya Ojukwu come off of the bench and spark the team. I hate to say it, but Puff Morris is really struggling at this level on defense and especially offense. Her three-point shooting has been her offense.

Bears should be able to beat the Vandals without their best player. C'mon, Cal!

Seven Bears have double-digit minutes but Naya Ojukwu only has six. Cal's half-court offense often struggles and they need Naya's energy inside to rebound and score. Cal jumps out to a seven-point lead when Maul, Ojukwu, Donez come into the game. Puff Morris has been a spark in this group, too.

Donez turns it over for 3-point play and then fouls on a 3-point shot. Fourth quarter belongs to Idaho, 11-2! Sheppard being beaten all game long by Hassmann. Bear's ballhandling is weak and a quick guard team like the Vandals has taken over and now has the lead.

Cal regrouped and closed the fourth quarter to a one-point differential (16-15) to reclaim the lead and the game

Walker's doing it all! Beautiful dime pass to a trailing Sheppard, follows it up with a big block. Keep feeding her down low. If she gets doubled someone's open.
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
at the under 5, Cal leads 44-41.
Second half is pounding the ball into Walker who scores or passes out of double/triple team for a score.
Morris looks like she has been shifted to very off guard - planted in the corner. She had a drive in the first half with speed, but I don't think she's tried another drive since.
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ok - Morris read my post and said "I can too drive" but she just drew the foul. Made both free throws

And then she drives on the next possession and makes the hoop!

1:48 to go in 3d - Cal 50 Idaho 43

(One negative: Cal is being outrebounded 31-24 - which is due to Idaho's 12 Offensive Rebounds to Cal's 4. )
Woodacre
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Why I am praising the defense. Idaho looks like they want to get a shot off within 10 seconds. Cal is taking them out of their comfort zone and making them use a lot more of the clock, and then throwing up a shot. With shots like those the rebounds can go anywhere, so I don't fault the Cal rebounders

Lulu just doesn't have her shot thus far this year. Often goes up off balance and is pushing the ball in a rushed motion.

Twidale with a little 5-0 run sparks the Bears back to a 7 point lead
But Idaho won't go away -
58 seconds to go - Cal 63, Idaho 59.

Cal is in the bonus....
