Kudos to Puff for really stepping up in the 2nd half.

Live stats shows we made only 14 of 25 layups, or 56%.

Idaho looked quicker but we shot better and they had no answer for Sakima or Naya.

Hope Mjracle is OK. She didn't look like herself tonight.

Mjaricle didn't play the end of the game. felt she was under water. Puff played her best game the second half.

Only 900 plus at the game. i thought we were suppose to draw more people if we had a good yeaar the year before. I guess that is a myth.

Mjracle struggled a bit and Barnes did not play well...and Puff was not good until the 2nd half.

On the other hand, Gisella was very good and Naya was pretty good...Lulu made some winning plays down the stretch (of course, she did step out of bounds at the end...when the Bears had a timeout left).

I liked how Sakima passed to cutters today - 5 assists, leading the team. Got the better of Idaho's post.

Lulu will not get many clean looks in the half court. She does her damage in transition and off of O-boards. We may have to live with that this season...unless the Bears can break the paint often. Too often, the Bears break the paint but look to finish rather than kick. Hopefully this will evolve as the season progresses. That being said, I'll take 7/18 on 3s.

One glaring weakness is point of attack defense. The Bears are inconsistent in this area and if they can improve in this area, more stops. Duh. When the Bears have been able to funnel the player to Sakima, it's usually a missed or blocked shot. Plus, Bear defenders have been screened and I guess this is communication and KYP (as to whether to go under, over or switch). At least this is what I've seen...

The Vandals play at a hectic pace, always pushing the ball. If they could have made some shots, Cal would have been in trouble. Even then, this was a competitive game and turned into a gritty game and the Bears had earn the win.

So far I think this team is a good team, a solid team and will compete against the better teams...but things will have to fall in place for them to make the NCAAs.

this wildly entertaining bears team (8-3 heading into this saturday's roadtrip for the acc opener at stanford) got the deepest roster of the coach charmin era, tonite's leading scorer against the probable big sky champions wuz off the bench gisella maul with 15 points on a highly efficient 5 of 7 field goals & in 27 productive minutes on the court with ZERO turnovers!!

at a time of women's basketball both professionally & collegiately seeing record setting attendance upward trajectories due to unprecedented interest in the game, there wuz 903 fans in attendance tonite which is a direct responsibility of failed worthless bureaucrat jennifer simon-o'neil (not a berkeley grad) who has surrounded herself with yes people that send out quickly deleted spam emails that will never grow the fanbase

chancellor lyons, when are u gonna say enough is enough (the metrics speak for themselves) & throw the trash out??

these unselfish & hard working true student athletes deserve more support than ur enabling with the current garbage time marketing/tix sales

is uc berkeley holding its employees accountable??#

I'd like to think it has to do with the time of the year. Two weeks until Christmas. People are going to Christmas parties, other holiday events, shopping, studying for finals, weren't inspired by an Idaho team.

Speaking of which, they had quite a few fans in attendance (more than San Jose State) likely because some of their players have local ties.

Wait until the ACC portion of the schedule starts. Lots of familiar teams will be coming to Haas.

I wonder if they included the teddy bears in their count. Lol.

Well uh, can't imagine a worse start to the 4th quarter. 13-2 Idaho run.

can't imagine a worse start to this season's wbb attendance with only 903 fans in attendance, what should be the go forward gameplan??

should jenny be fired for straight up incompetence??

Does anyone know of watch parties in Berkeley for the Sunday game? I was thinking about Bobby G's on University or the Headlands brewery place on Bancroft in the old Bears' Lair spot. (And there's always Cali on Telegraph: good beer, uninspiring food.)

RE: Attendance - The men's team only has just one loss and has an upset win over Ucla, but their attendance has declined in each of the last 3 games. It seems like team performance just isn't impacting attendance for some reason.

glutton, jay larson is failing the men like just like jennifer simon-o'neil is failing the women

attendance is NOT gonna improve until these clown show worthless bureaucrats (non berkeley grads) are gone

think bear bint is trolling when she asks if there's gonna be a "watch party" for a game that's 20 miles away & a cal wbb program that can't even fill up a 30 passenger booster bus

Recently signed 2026 Cal recruit, Anna Lagonikaki, a 6'3 forward from Greece, was at the game last night sitting in the student section with her mother.

Another name I can spell or pronounce. I saw her on the message board. We like those Greeks and Aussies.

How do you know they couldn't fill up the bus? I go to all the home game but turned down the bus, . Did you commit to the bus?

Saw her downstairs before the game: an imposing figure.

I didn't attend the game itself; did wvitbear's wish come true about playing the "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" at half-time?

A small holiday offering to all us Bears, two stellar performances in two styles:

They didn't play it. Like the jerry Garcia and David Grisman album. i play mandolin and jerry was a good banjo player before he joined the Grateful dead. Am working on a Grisman tune now .

I agree with virtually everything in this post. To be honest, this feels like a WNIT team...one that can actually make a deep run.

Considering how young we are (I think we forget just how young this team is!), if we can keep the core together for next year, I see a tournament team that could genuinely make some noise at the top of the ACC. The only caveat is that we'll need to land a high-level post in the portal.

I think all sports at all schools are affected by today's transfer portal- when you have an almost completely new roster every year there is no attachment other than to the school and jersey color. Also in our and other former Pac-12 schools, other than the top name school or two (i.e. Duke on the men's side), who cares about seeing Wake Forest, Boston College, etc., a lot more people would turn out for UCLA, Oregon, etc.

I think that people will always want to see nationally-ranked teams playing in nationally-relevant games. So we have to keep shooting for that every year. I am glad we are back to getting good international players since that has to be part of the strategy. I might also hire someone off of the Idaho staff to help give us an offensive system that looks like that one. It could help us to win, and certainly would be a fan favorite.

cal fanatic, too bad the cal wbb program got a worthless bureaucrat who spends her paying being a fan posting on message boards re: the team & softball instead of doing her job marketing/selling tixs which has resulted in near non existent fan base

this wbb program is losing $5,000,000 a year under jenny's failed leadership, this is NOT sustainable

hopefully simon-o'neil will resign outta shame for the way she forced the suicidal women's swimmers to endure years of relentless abuse while she did **** to protect them

it's payback time in berkeley#

We've got the athleticism for that but with Sheppard and Naya nursing ongoing injuries, makes it tough. Imagine Sakima wouldn't thrive in that system either. Maybe next year we'll see something more uptempo.
annarborbear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I thought it was more than just up-tempo. A lot of players of very average athletic ability had been taught a variety of fakes and dribble drive moves that led to quick passes to others who were open, and later to drives to the basket after they faked those passes. Usually only a very good player on another team might have those types of moves. But they had instilled them in everybody as part of an overall system.

How many students were there?

For me, that's the foundation of attendance. Students bring energy and passion, but they've never supported women's basketball at Cal.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
agreed clay, engaged students become future season tix buyers/donors

the problem in berkeley is that the co athletic director in charge jennifer simon-o'neil has a decade plus track record of non innovative marketing of the program to students, she has surrounded herself with yes people that like her are not berkeley grads & honestly not qualified to build a fanbase

right now the athletic department's strategy is to just send emails to football season tix buyers (most of whom have never been to a wbb game) that are poorly conceived that read like spam that are quickly deleted

compounding problems is that the unlikeable o'neil has alienated 98% of the donor base with her anti football agenda so the critically needed basketball practice facility got zero fundraising right now

the good news is that a lot of KEY donors have complained about jay & jenny to rich plus there's the munger report re: the suicidal women's swimmers which paints her as EVIL AS ****!!

her days in berkeley are numbered (making just south of $500,000) and like her arrogant pal markeisha is gonna find out that there is zero marketplace interest in hiring a worthless bureaucrat that just wants to spend her days as a fan tracking softball & women's basketball recruiting instead of actually doing her job

I'm guessing quite a few who normally would have attended stayed home to study.

When I was leaving Sunday's game I saw an athlete sitting in the stands by herself studying.

Reminded me of what I'd sometimes do. I also would sometimes grab a sandwich and watch a few innings of baseball

rich, now is the time to FIRE the co athletic director ****tards jay larson & jennifer simon-o'neil (not berkeley grads) for their far ranging failures from working against the football program, not selling tixs to either of the basketball programs which are playing in front of pathetic sonoma state level crowds with precipitously declining sr citizen fanbases & their unlikeable personalities which has hindered any fundraising for a critically needed dedicated basketball practice facility
