I watched most of the first half of the Demon Deacon's game against the Cardinal in Palo Alto last Thursday night. It was a low scoring affair with Stanford winning 55-43. Stanford jumped out in front in the opening quarter by 9 points and expanded their margin to 11 at halftime, 24-13. The second half was virtually even (31-30). Neither team registered twenty points in any quarter. The defensive effort was intense, holding both teams to shooting percentages of 29.8 to 29.1, respectively.

HC Megan Gebbia is in her second season at Wake Forest, and she has impressed me. Her team was picked last (18th) in the ACC. She only returned three players from last year, yet she plays an eight-player rotation of three freshmen, three sophs & two juniors and is 12-5. She recruited a top 25 recruit class and started three of them in Palo Alto. The other two starters were a soph and a junior. These players are scrappy and get after it. They have held their opponents to to 56.5 points per game through 17 games.

Gebbia had her team play a 1-3-1 zone against Stanford and it shut down their offense. It's designed to make it difficult to connect on three-point shots. Only one Cardinal player, Nunu Agara, was able to find a way to score. She produced 27 of the home team's 55 points by finding soft spots in the zone defense. She hit 10-12 foot base line jumpers on either side of the basket. She received passes around the free throw line and scored from there. Agara grabbed 9 rebounds, 5 of them were offensive. She was fouled often and was a perfect 8-8 from the FT line. Stanford only was successful on 5 of 24 three-point efforts (20.8%).

I am going to suggest a gameplan that might be successful against the 1-3-1. If Cal pounds the ball inside (like they did against Duke) and drives to the basket, I predict that they will prevail 67-57. The Bears basically had no three-point shooting versus the Blue Devils yet put up 74 points. Stanford also crushed WF on the boards, outrebounding them 51-32. The Cardinal grabbed 20 offensive boards! Cal out rebounded Wake Forest last season by a large margin, too, and captured that game. I don't know how the Bears will find the soft spots in the Demon Deacon's zone, but Charmin & her coaching staff need to design some plays that will attempt to do that tomorrow afternoon.

2025-26 Women's Basketball Roster - Wake Forest University Athletics

I will quickly review WF's eight player rotation since they have a lot of new personnel. Their 5-9 soph PG is Aurora Sorbye from Norway. She leads her team in assists with 3.35 per game. She scores 6.9 ppg primarily by being the #2 three-point shooter with 17 made. Freshman 5-8 shooting guard, Milan Brown, contributes 7.4 points but leads the team in rebounding with 6.2 boards per game. Brown is very athletic and stands second in steals with 21. Their top long-distance threat is 6-3 junior wing, Mary Carter, from Antelope HS in Sacramento.
The NorCal product is the #2 offensive threat on Wake Forest and averages 11.4 points plus 5.2 rebounds. On the season, Carter has hit 41 treys! Their top scorer is 6-1 soph PF, Grace Oliver, with 13.6 points per contest. She might be their best all-around player with 23 steals and 5.4 boards/g. She is tied for 3rd in three-point baskets with 15. Their starting post is 6-3 Aussie freshman, Opal Bird. Her numbers are 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds plus she is tops in blocked shots w/ 14. (see second page of stats)

WBB_Season_1.8.pdf

The first player off of the bench is typically 5-8 frosh SG Caitlyn Jones. She makes things happen with 7.2 points per game in only 17 minutes of PT. The next post is 6-2 sophomore Kennedy Moore who adds 3.7 points to the offense. Finally, Madisyn Jordan is another 6-1 junior wing player that can drill the three with 15
treys on the season.

I hope that Cal does not come out flat. This young group from Wake Forest exudes energy. It would be really big for the Bears to jump out to a solid lead in the 1st quarter like the Cardinal did. This team is not the caliber of the eight teams that Cal has lost to in their 9-8 season. Cal needs to learn how to close out the fourth quarter to preserve a victory! This would break their losing streak and make the future feel positive, again.
GO BEARS!

Did Puff Morris get injured in a game? I don't remember it. Maybe she got hurt in practice. Is she wearing a protective boot on her leg or anything? It doesn't sound as if it's only an ankle sprain or she would be back already.

I seem to recall a report that it happened in practice before the ACC road trip

Cal is getting easy shots but is missing the majority of them. If this continues the Bears might lose. Charmin is playing both posts together for the initial time this season. When Wake Forest begins hitting their threes, they'll close the gap quickly. Barnes missed three wide open shots. Cal is shooting 25% (4-16) in the 1st quarter.

Stanford led at half 24-13 by 11. Cal leads by 12, 26-14. Both teams have three scorers. Four of Wake Forest's baskets are on layups by their two freshmen guards. They have beaten Lulu Twidale twice, Lola Donez once and I not certain of the other defender. Miracle Sheppard, Taylor Barnes & Naya Ojukwu are all without a basket. Mary Carter is the only Demon Deacon that has two baskets from the outside. Their post player, Grace Oliver, is the team's top offensive threat but has yet to score.

Cal is not dominating the boards like I had hoped. Mostly one and done for the Bears.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wake Forest has three quick layups from their post players, Grace Oliver & Opal Bird. I have a feeling that the DD are going to charge right now. They have more energy and have outscored the Bears by 10-3, cutting Cal's margin to three points. Sheppard hits a big three to get it back to eight.

Cal led by 16 in the first half and now only up by 5. WF cuts the margin to 3 but Maul hits a trey at the third quarter buzzer for a 43-37 score. Demon Deacons are on fire now with 23 points in the third. It appears that they possess all of the momentum and are prepared to take over the game in the final stanza.

Lulu Twidale has hit four treys but has given up lots of easy baskets on defense. Cal survives the fourth quarter and defeats Wake Forest, 61-52, for its first ACC victory this season. Bears missed ten free throws but thankfully Ojukwu awakened to contribute eight points down the home stretch.

Two freshmen guards, Jones & Brown, for WF combined for 23 points and 9 assists to spark their comeback.

CONGRATS to the bears (10-8, 1-4 in conference) on this season's 1st acc victory & for not folding like a deck of cards from fatigue (which is embedded in this program's dna due to the restrictive playing rotation/player development) in the 4th quarter in outscoring the deacs 18-15

props to coach charmin smith on finally playing naya & sakima TOGETHER at the end of the 1st quarter, starting the 2nd quarter and most importantly during the critical last 5 minutes of the game when ojuwku went off for her 8 points to seal the deal...it's still no bueno that the team's most productive scorer with a 56.5% field goal percentage only played 17 minutes, the head coach needs to play both naya & sakima each 30+ mpg on next week's eastcoastie road trip to syracuse & boston college

yeah naya ojuwku is shocky's favorite basketball player these days (sorry jaylen) with her smiling RELENTLESS non stop MOTOR despite her height limitations as an ELITE 4 that can score buckets, pound & guard opposing 4s (as a former +1 athletic star volleyball player) & feed walker under the bucket (which wuz reciprocated by sakima on a beautiful lob entry pass)

Wasn't the greatest game of basketball I've ever witnessed but it sure is nice to get a W in conference. California's defense was fantastic in the first half though helped by WF's ineptitude. Never felt like they were going to catch us and in the end won comfortably enough. Only two subs used in the whole game. Don't know if that's sustainable. Sakima and Naya together on the court a fair amount (a recent subject of controversy on BI) and they worked well together though I think it might be a horses for courses type thing. Crowd as about as one would expect.

According to the stats we had 19 assists on 20 baskets! The other one was probably Mjracle's steal and layup, in a way assisted by WF.

We missed too many layups and free throws, otherwise the score wouldn't have been close.

I think we held up very well against WF's intense pressure, especially considering we played only 7.

Taylor didn't have her best game but Naya played well and showed she can defend on the perimeter.

IMHO we were on the losing end of way too many calls. WF played much rougher than we did but we were called for more fouls. I didn't have any problem with other calls, like out-of-bounds.

The refs weren't great today and a lot of marginal calls went against us. My biggest gripe is they called too many fouls. The best refs let the players play.

postgame press conference with the head coach:

"We were really able to take advantage of the big lineup. That's something that I wish we would have tried a little bit more against Duke, with Sakima and Naya in the game. There was a shift being able to have those two in the game at the same time."

Cal's offense was pretty one dimensional today. Pass it into the post. Lob it into the post. Force it into the post.

Granted, both Sakima and Naya should have their way down there against WF. But there is a time for an entry pass...and there are times to not do it.

To force passes in when the Sakima already has two or three defenders on her? Not wise. Add to that, the offense is stagnant when the ball stops because the pass is always going 'there'.

Cal needs to break the paint with drives. The few times Cal broke the paint with drives, they got open shots. I would think Mjracle could help in this area...maybe even Barnes or Maul. Spacing and timing.

I am not sure how Wake Forest has won 12 games...soft schedule? While they have a couple of players that are decent, if Cal was efficient at all, the Bears win by 25.

Teams are going after Lulu. This is probably going to be the case all season.

Cal should at least split on the road this next week. If they play well, they can sweep but they have to button things up.
