I was watching news on ABC 7 about the restoration of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts, Cal women's basketball had their home games there more than 20 years ago. The floor still has the Cal and Pac 10 logos. Who remembers going there? The center is reopening today.

I didn't go.

It was the 1997-98 season as Harmon Gym was being renovated into what is now Haas Pavilion.

I attended games there but I don't remember much. Attendance must have been poor because I do remember being able to park in the back.

I was covering that team for the Daily Cal. I remember I really liked the vibe they brought. There was this one player, Paige Bowie who I remember being a real energizer.

Went to a number of women's games at Kaiser. During the Cub Club days, my son was a mop kid at Kaiser for the women, at the Oakland Coliseum for the men and at the opening day at Haas. Fun times actually seeing him do some physical work.

During my ballet days (pardon me while I laugh hysterically), I performed there as a Toy Soldier in the Oakland Ballet's version of The Nutcracker Suite. It wasn't due to my dazzling dance skills. The Ballet just recruited kids from the Oakland schools to fill out the cast (and probably to boost ticket sales).

My wife and I started going to Cal WBB at Kaiser because we lived in an apartment by the lake a short walk away. Before that we only followed the men. Haven't watched the men play in years but since Kaiser we've rarely missed a women's game. Fond memories even if it was the brutal Marianne Stanley era. Also saw Soundgarden there on their final tour.

signed, my better half's granny was at Cal more than a hundred years ago, during "the big one", and we still have a big game poster rescued from her estate.
