This 6-5 post player really improved over her two seasons at Rhode Island. She still has two years of eligibility

Albina Syla played 37 minutes against Alabama in the NCAA Tournament and did decently. She scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. If she can perform that well, she can definitely help Cal out. Her team was really good and defeated NC State on the road.

Also averaged 15-10-5-5 in her run to A10 Tournament MVP. Love a player who shows up in March.

We're doing well in Europe and Australia. I remember only Chen Yue from Asia, only Rama N'diaye from Africa, only Penina Davidson from the Pacific Islands, and none from the Americas.

The international players always do seem to mention academics. So we are now capitalizing on our world-wide reputation, as we should. In college basketball, the largest number of international players do come from Australia and Europe. So that is where you most need an on-going recruiting presence.

Penina Davidson is from New Zealand (Auckland).

I'm understandably excited about this signing. Cal had a pipeline from Finland in the 80s. They had four Finnish players over the years. It's been awhile. Menna karhut (Go Bears!).

New Zealand is the largest of the Polynesian Islands, may once have been a continent which is now mostly underwater. The land Auckland is on is called the North Island. Lovely place and people, I've visited many times.

I used the term Pacific Islands to distinguish it from Australia and to include other islands I don't think have sent WBB players to Cal.

Yeah fun. I just mentioned in the other thread that I was once friends with Heli Toikka for a few years. Even played a bunch a basketball with her and several other former players from Cal and other local colleges.

I translated for Heli Toikka's parents at a post game dinner on Senior Day way back when. She and Mia Kuusisto were the two best Finns we had. Here's a list of the Finnish women who played for the Bears. (Earlier I'd said there were four but I'd forgotten one.)
Auli Gronroos 1989, 90
Anja Hellman 1986, 87
Mia Kuusisto 1986, 87, 88, 89
Seija Leino 1986, 87
Heli Toikka 1983, 84, 85, 86
