Looks like Marta has been released. Don't understand was on Development squad and then signed a 10 day contract & now she has been released. Why did they put her through all of this?

On Thursday, the Phoenix Mercury released Suarez. She spent more than a month with the organization after signing a developmental contract on May 6 and was later released from it on July 9. The same day (July 9), the team signed Suarez to a 7-day contract. On July 16, Suarez was released, according to the league's transactions page.
The former Mercury forward's journey in the league has been a winding one.
On May 2, the Golden State Valkyries waived Suarez. She was originally selected 16th overall by Seattle during the 2026 WNBA Draft. However, on draft night, Golden State made a surprising move when they traded their eighth overall pick, Flau'Jae Johnson, to the Storm for the draft rights to Suarez and a 2028 second-round pick.

I thought maybe they were gonna give her a regular contract after the 7 day. I think their roster has room too. The Mercury has been a little all over the place this season.

They might re-sign her. They can give her two more 7-day contracts before having to put her on a full-time contract.

She made the right decision signing with the Mercury over the Valkyries. She would have never seen the court on the Valkyries. Though the Mercury is struggling, at least she gets some minutes.

Phoenix has two players and a bunch of wannabes. Good spot.

Also, I can see GMs looking at the schedule and manipulating those seven-day contracts. If, for example, the Mercury have one game in five days, they could just play with 11 (or bring up a developmental player for one of her 12 games), and then re-sign Marta when they have four games in seven days.

I don't know what the rules are in the playoffs, though ...

Yeah, Valkyries lead the league thus far in bench points per game (35.4) with Sun being second (30.1)...this is a few days old so take it with a grain of salt:

Interesting that the #1 (today) Lynx have the fewest bench points and the #2 (today) Valkryies have the most.

No minutes for Marta today in the Mercury's 72-63 win over the Sun.

Next weekend is the All-Star Game so maybe her next 7-day contract will be in effect when the teams return to action after the game.

At least she could rejoice in Spain's 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final today.

Fyi. Valkyries are in Phoenix on 7/29.

Damn! I'd be so pleased if M.O. (she's listed as Ugonne in the Fever's roster) had been signed by the Mynx or a team I like. But I'm happy she's signed at all, and agree that Boston and Billings will be good mentors.

Yes, but she could be re-signed to full season today....it had to happen before a full contract could be signed....as she was on final 7 day contract. They don't have a full roster so.... They also didn't post a "thankyou" goodbye note... we shall see.

woodacre, are you aware that the person with oversite over the cal women's basketball program has another serious allegation of abuse against our student athletes and that the hoops teams under her watch have absolutely failed to grow the fanbase beyond the dozens of sr citizens that currently support the team??
