Looking at the current standing the #2Valkyries are ahead of #3 Vegas by 3 games all in the loss column yet LasV has clinched a playoff spot & the Valkries havent. I think i know the answer but is it due to the number of Conf wins?
No, it's because the Valkyries can still end up in a tie with Portland if the Valks lose all their games (including three with Portland) and Portland wins all of theirs. Portland would win the season series 3-1, gaining the playoffs. The Fire are the only team outside the top 8 that can catch the Valks. If the Valks lose all their games and the Fire win all theirs they would both be 24-20. So, the next Valks win or Fire loss (today?) clinches it for the Valks. Las Vegas has played more games. The most they can lose also is 20, and they won the season series against the Fire, which is why they've already clinched despite being behind the Valks.
The Valks need to beat the Lynx both times they play them to have any chance to finish first. And finishing first likely means Indiana in the second round of the playoffs instead of New York or Las Vegas.
And GSV also needs to prove -- to themselves mainly -- that they can beat the top teams. They've struggled with Minnesota, LV and NY.
They've beaten the Liberty both matchups this season....so not sure why you include New York in your assessment???.... 87-70 in NY, and more recently at the end of June at Ballhalla 76-67. I agree regarding the Lynx and Aces...
Two stats make the Valkeries an unusually great basketball experience to watch. - By far the lowest opponents points allowed per game, and also lowest average TO's per game.. Terrific coaching, great team effort.
New York has been without one of its best players, Leonie Fiebich, almost all year. Supposedly she will return, and if so, she makes a huge difference.
That said, it looks like Satou Sabally is done for the season, which is a big blow.
With Fiebich, New York is a tall, veteran team that can shoot and defend.
