Have been meaning to write this for awhile. The most popular person in America died and she was a female. Everyone loved her. but have you ever heard a Dolly Parton record played at the women basketball game. So much for diversity. I think we should play one of her songs in every game for the current season. Thoughts.

Why is this a lack of diversity? DJs put together song lists based upon what they think the "audience" wants to hear.

You want her songs played at games, so go visit the DJ located behind the visiting team's basket and make requests.

Trust me the audience around me doesn't like the songs. What instrument do you play?

Well, that shouldn't stop you from making song requests.

None. Tried piano but didn't have the patience at age 12. Lol.

Scrooge here - I don't want any DJ playing any recorded music at the basketball games.

However I'd be happy to have live performances at halftime or other opportune moments. If you want diversity we have local performers like Diamano Coura (West African), Gamelan Sekar Jaya (Indonesian), Ka Ua Tuahine (Polynesian), and I'm sure many more.

I suppose we could find performers able to cover songs by Dolly Parton and other deceased artists. One who comes to mind is Country Joe McDonald, who lived most of his life in Berkeley and passed away earlier this year.

I was forced to take piano lessons at age 6 but relieved of that responsibility after I broke my arm (in an unrelated incident).

Of my own volition I played tuba in the school band from grades 5 through 12. Haven't touched one since but IMHO any song with a tuba can't be all bad.

Now as an old man I'm trying to learn oboe. The only thing the two have in common is I'm not expected to sing while playing.

You are just. reedy type of guy. When i played in a band, I occasionally played baritone horn. we did Salvation Army type of song. But the rest of the time we were strings. We have a Bear here who plays banjo. I played trumpet in grade school.

The British Royal Guard played a "9 to 5" tribute to Dolly during the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.. But I can't see it happening in Berkeley,

I remember as a kid going to Warrior games and during time outs all you'd hear would be the sound of thousands of people talking. It was kind of cool. Then when the time out ended most people would stop talking and you hear the sound of the game. It was an interesting contrast. It was the same at Seals' hockey games. At Cal games you'd get the band playing and sometimes they'd stop before the time out ended and again, you'd hear people talking. Now whatever sports event you go to, college or pro, you're constantly bombarded by noise when the ball isn't in play. Sometimes it feels like some shadowy conspiracy doesn't; want us to talk. I used to find it annoying, now I find it sad. It would be nice if they'd give us an occasional silent time out. Market it as Talk to Your Neighbor" time.

I once studied for a Calculus midterm at a Warriors game at the Cow Palace back in the 60's. Hate to say it, but watching a game on television is now a more pleasant experience. I can control the volume, watch some replays, and get some decent food during a game.

There is not much of an audience at either gender's basketball games to care what was played.

Well hopefully that can turn around somewhat, but I don't think the wonderful Dolly Parton's music will play a role in that. I mean look at who the Valkyries featured during halftime at their game...he was great btw (and I'm old).

So good to see and hear a true East Bay symbol in Chase.

Listen to a "touch of Tuba" on you tube, I played it in College

Thanks. I found a version from the College of Idaho Concert Band where the tuba soloist stood through the whole thing holding his upright tuba without a stand or strap.

Anyway to my ears a pretty ponderous piece. Check out Tuba Skinny, a great classical jazz band who got their start busking on the streets of New Orleans. They can make a statue dance.

Willie Nelson is the most diversified musician in America, His Texas festival still gets a million fans. I always thought when the visiting team made a road trip out here, they should play On The Road Again.
