Cal 55 Vanguard 28 at the half.

Among the newcomers Ruby and Jovana look best to me. Intensity is good but defense could be better. Lots of threes from both sides.

Carly got a few minutes but I don't think se took a shot.

Attendance looks terrible, maybe 200.

It was fun to see everyone getting some playing time. Kind of weird that Vanguard went with a full court press and trapping defense when they were already down by forty. We had too many defensive lapses but given the "quality" of the opposition it's forgivable. Taylor Barnes looks even better than last season, she gives me Mikayla Cowlings vibes. Carly ain't shy about taking her threes.My fellow Finn looks like she'll be productive as out starting center. I'm not saying it was a small crowd but I've seen more people in line at the pharmacy. Based on tonight's performance I'm predicting a national title for California this season. Oh by the way....Go Bears!!!

Anastasia played quite a bit at point later in the game. She didn't stuff the stat sheet but did run the team effectively. Sofia played a bit at the end.

Anna also got some minutes late and looked fine against Vanguard's bench.

They have to practice their stuff and they did force a few turnovers. Being down 40 allows a team to try anything they want.

This game was a good morale booster for them. It was nice to see Gisella get some points. She seemed pretty discouraged during the last two exhibitions. I'm excited for this season!

Also, the way Shannon runs reminds me a bit of Olivia Miles! lol

Not worried about G. She will be our rock on both O and D. She fouled out of the SC game so quickly that she didn't barely played

I think our most improved play will be Taylor. Stronger, more aggressive, can bring the ball up and appears to be 100% healthy

Shannon is super quick and super aggressive to the rack so I do see the Hidalgo comparison.

Hope she (and our other players) have developed a middle game. I haven't seen it yet, but it would really improve their game

Did Miracle Sheppard see any action tonight? What was the final score? It sounds as if Cal is weak on its perimeter defense this season. UCLA had a field day, and it sounds as if Vanguard had open shots available, too.

Mjracle didn't play. Final score 106 to 62. Vanguard did hit too many threes, especially #21 from Steph Curry range. I was a little concerned that we didn't dominate the smaller team inside but we did shoot very well from all over the court.

I haven't seen a box score yet. I remember Lulu, Taylor, Gisella, and Shannon scored well into double figures and Ruby had 8 assists. Everybody but Mjracle played.

FYI, Vanguard isn't even listed at the top of the WBB web page in terms of schedule/results. Both UCLA and USC exhibition are, so I think there is an understanding that the Vanguard game was in a different category in terms of providing results and/or box score. Makes sense in that in the past box scores were never offered up. I guess it's different when playing a D1 team under different exhibition agreements.

Albina Syla, who started at center, looked long, thin, and not particularly quick. Jovana Jevtivic played about as many minutes at center and looked not quite as long but quicker. IIRC both scored high single digits. Neither got a lot of rebounds but Jovana got a few more.

I think Jevtivic is stronger and has the best hands at center for us.

From just the two exhibitions I've seen I like Jovana's game. She can handle the ball away from the basket, run the floor, and finish in traffic. But I'm glad we have two tall players because there will be fouls and matchup problems. Also against top teams strength will be a concern - UCLA pushed us around inside.
