From Cal Media Relations:
BERKELEY California's Gennifer Brandon and Layshia Clarendon have both named AP All-America Honorable Mention selections, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
It is the second consecutive season that Clarendon has earned an All-America nod but the first by the AP as she was honored by the WBCA last season. It is the first All-America honor for Brandon. The dual honors marks the first time that two Bears have been honored by the AP in the same season since Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker were both AP honorable mention selections in the 2007-08 season.
Brandon has had an All-American season and averages 12.3 points and 11.2 rebounds for the Bears. The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award candidate and WBCA All-Region selection has solidified herself not only as one of the top post players but as one of the top players overall in the country with her dominating efforts throughout the season that includes a 23-point, 26-rebound effort against USC a mark that ranks second in the NCAA this season for rebounds in a single game and broke a 19-year old Pac-12 record for rebounds in a conference game. Despite a season average of just 28 minutes played per game and as a player who has seen action for 35-plus minutes only six times this year for Cal Brandon ranks No. 16 in the NCAA with her 11.2 rebounds per game and is one of just 16 players in the country to average at least 12 points and 11 rebounds a game. The junior is in the midst of a California single-season rebounding record of 380 and counting and is just 22 points shy of joining the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound club.
Clarendon, a Wade Watch Trophy finalist, Naismith Award candidate, WBCA All-Region selection and a Senior CLASS Award finalist, leads California with 16.4 points per game a mark she has increased to 22.5 in NCAA Tournament play and was a unanimous All-Pac-12 selection in addition to being named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year. Just the seventh Golden Bear to hit the 1,600-point mark in a career, Clarendon has led the Bears in scoring in 13 of their 18 Pac-12 games. Well respected both on and off the court, Clarendon has also been selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this year.
