I understand the reasoning with Boyd and PG playing time,,, but what about schools like UConn and Duke and Stanford etc who don't have any problem with continuously getting top/highly ranked recruits (Stanford also getting Ogumike and Samuelson clans) ???

You've named the obvious big ones, but there really aren't too many "etc"eteras out there. I think it is likely that Cal will have to build more of a track record, keep nailing down the elites that they can, find strong filler/role players before they can potentially break into that group. It just ain't that easy. It takes time.

I also don't feel like we have "lost" too many of these big names recently. Frankly, it sounds like we very well could have had Simon and maybe another, but the whole idea of "fit" and of course all of the technical details about actually qualifying etc. is were a some may slip through the cracks.

Contending for PAC-12 titles, making a Final Four appearance or two should go a long way towards helping Cal reach that truly upper echelon of recruiting, but let's face it, we/Cal don't have the pedigree yet. Yet! Naturally we all hope we are headed there, but I am willing to allow a few years to build towards that level.

Having said all of that, I do think this team is going to struggle now and then this season and that if they can pull off a top 10 finish that will be huge feather in their caps because I see much room for improvement. But I believe that the overall trajectory of the program is headed upward and I also think the team can be very good for at least a few years with the talent lined up. A few recruiting breaks here and there will set them up to reach the final four again.

Wow! When I read this I couldn't believe it so I went and looked it up one the NCAA site. It's true. I'm not even sure if this is legal, but an 18 year old would have to break with her family and sue to overturn it. So far none has. And it's too bad it hasn't happened. Because no one has, the rule will stand until one student-athlete feels strongly enough to break with family and free 18 year old student athletes in the future.

I hope this all works out for Ms. Simon, but the chances are that there will be unhappiness in the family, discontent on the team and trouble down the line for all involved. I would hope and expect that Cal would NEVER put itself in the position of Cynthia Cooper and the USC athletic department in a travesty like this. Oddly enough, it appears that after a student fulfills the NLI by attending the university they signed with, they are a free agent at 19.

Having parents who exercise this kind of control is a recipe for disaster and 500 miles is not far enough for the staff to avoid detrimental parental interference with a program. Though the rule is real, I hope the disagreement was mild and not a veto of the student's wishes. For everyone concerned, I wish the best. But LG&Co. may have dodged a bullet if it went down the way Bearfan02 surmises.

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/nli/nli/frequently+asked+questions/index.html

Go to Signing the NLI after clicking on FAQ's and look under Parent or Legal Guardian's Signature. I'm just appalled.

Not a free agent per se, since NCAA transfer rules will apply.

Gottlieb should be around for a long time, and I think if landing a pair of potential McD's AA's in a 2-person class is considered a "down" year for recruiting for us, we are in fine shape.

With Anigwe we are off to a solid start for the 2015's. 6'3" Green out of Oregon might be our next realistic solid post target, unless Gottlieb can surprise us with someone from further East (i.e. Texas, as UT-Austin is full). I think we are in good shape for Kennedy Burke and Asha Thomas, then there's Robertson, Mosely, and Moore. For some reason, I have a feeling the last one, like the other Moore this year, goes East, but that's just a hunch.

Anyway, 6'1" wing Katie McWilliams from Oregon is #28 by Hoopgurlz. She seems to have Stanford grades, but if Stanford gets Katie Lou, might McWilliams end up at Cal? She seems to be a solution for our shooting woes. Danni Wiliams from NM is also probably in the mix but has a Stanford offer. Not sure if/what that means w/r/t McWilliams and Stanford, though Danni is a 2-Guard.

HOWEVER, while we could have a great class for 2015, I think 2016 is "where it's at." We all know about Ionescu. Then 6'3" Celeste West appears to be one of the top 2 posts in CA (the other being a girl from Torrey Pines who has Stanford grades). We know Celeste has visited Cal already, but guess what: her big sis now plays for SJSU! Might this mean distance won't be an issue like it was for some of our 2014 targets?

Now, I think the big prize for 2016 is 6'1" lefty wing Jaelyn Brown. In video she looks spectacular -- perhaps the best girl out of CA since Mosqueda-Lewis. There's also PG Destiny Slocum from Idaho ranked #14 by Prospects. Amber Ramirez from Texas (top 10) is from Texas, lol, but has visited UW...but I think UConn might be after her.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Gottlieb recruits the '15s with the '16s seeming to have more talent.

Pretty much same story with Canada. Don't get parents who dictate where their kids go to school, assuming finances are not an issue. Seems incredibly selfish and shortsighted.

So I guess Jordin's parents are also dictating that she list her Twitter bio as "A part of the future Bruin fab five", even though she really would rather go to Cal and only chose UCLA because her parents dictated that she do so?

What horrific, controlling monsters those parents must be.

Canada made her decision relatively early in the process, so of course she had that stuff on her twitter. What did you expect her to put on her twitter? My mom says I have to stay in LA so I'm going to UCLA because I'm too smart for $C?

Thanks for the information. Encouraging. With so many schollies available, 2015 will be a very important recruiting class. I'm hoping for 3 legit Bigs. Want a big time shooter/scorer, too. Even if Hind developed into a starting PG, we still need to get another top PG in the pipeline. I think we see Green at the 2 guard/wing for her Cal career.

Her Twitter bio doesn't have to mention her college at all. It could just say "Windward Class of '14", or "Live laugh love" or basically anything at all. I just think it's horrible that her parents are physically coercing Jordin Canada to pretend to be excited about the UCLA recruiting class on her Twitter bio, after they've already committed enough horrors in coercing her to attend UCLA in the first place. What monsters.

Also, now you've got me confused. Did Canada make her decision or did her parents make the decision and force it upon her against her will? It's getting hard to keep track.

Bri Moore, St. Mary's Stockton, PG.

Ranked #50 by Full Court (Thomas at #26 there), unranked by the others (same with Thomas). We know Cal has offered Thomas but it appears not so yet with Moore. I am guessing East because one profile for her lists Kansas as her lone school of interest and that they have offered. And based on hoow Gottlieb recruited the 2014's (and 2013's for that matter), I don't see a "first come first serve" situation. IF this is the case, I could see Moore looking elsewhere rather than waiting to see if a spot opens up for her, especially since the girls are committing earlier and earlier these days.

I am going to be honest, I don't think we were Canadas preference, from what I heard she was always a bruin, she entertained Stanford with a little help from Nygarrd but when that wasn't in the works, she looked at USC but only due to the fact Caldwell beat her to a commitment at UCLA. They seemed to work it all out and she ended up a bruin after all!

Thats what I heard and after all does it really matter, she didn't come here so it's a done deal.

We all have our sources. And sometimes you can't name names unless you are looking to burn bridges. So we'll all move on with our own version of this thing. You are right. In the end it does not matter what the story is because Canada is a bruin. We'll see how it plays out. Same deal with Simon. It's all about the 2015 class now.
