Congratulations on hosting a first round. It sucks that if you make it past Texas you get UConn in Albany, NY. I hope you beat them if that happens, though.

Wow, some of you are already making plans for Albany. I think you have a horrible match up with the Shockers.
I didnt see them this season but last season I saw them press a big part of the game against their opponents.
They beat Ohio State and Kansas St and lost to Tennessee by three points at UT. They were 4-3 vs top 100 teams.

Make sure you are not spectators on Sunday.

How did this team get a 13 seed? They should have been 8 to 10 seed. They are a pretty tough team. Won't be easy.

Tickets for the NCAA first- and second-round games are on sale through the Cal Athletic Ticket Office at the women’s basketball ticketing page on CalBears.com and through 800-GO BEARS (800-462-3277). Tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders at 6 p.m. tonight. Current season ticket holders will have an exclusive window to purchase until 12 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, when tickets will be opened to the general public. Because the NCAA tournament is not a home event, season ticket holders will not be guaranteed their same seats. All-session passes range from $25-40 for adults, with less expensive options for youth and seniors. Individual-session tickets become available Tuesday at noon PT on March 17.

The Shockers are 29-4 with bad November road losses to Eastern Washington and Florida Gulf Coast, then later 3-point road losses to Tennessee and Drake.

Their top 5 play over 31 minutes each. They're experienced (3 SR, 1 JR, 1 R-SO) but not big (5-8, 5-10, 5-10, 5-11, 6-2).
They average 10 steals per game!
They're shooting .435 from the field, .305 on threes, and .759 from the line.
Their stats are fairly balanced, though wing Alex Harden leads most categories.

This could be a match up like Long Beach State, except LBSU spreads their minutes among more players. In the Tennessee loss Wichita State got killed on the boards but had 13 steals and hit 9 of 20 threes. I'm guessing our keys will be taking care of the ball, which we did not do at LBSU, and defending the three.

The four #13 seeds are as follows, with their RPI(RPI is from WBBSTATE.COM)
Wichita State - 37
Liberty - 71
CSUN - 73
Albany - 78

I doubt Liberty, CSUN, or Albany make the dance without winning their tournaments. Wichita State might have. They finished 29-4. Had they lost the championship game and finished 28-5 I think they are still in.

The Shockers only gives up 52 ppg, which ties them for 5th in the nation in D1 ball. They gave up 54 pts to Tenn(RPI 2); 56 pts to FGCU(RPI 17); 55pts to Oh St(RPI 29) and 48 to Ks St(RPI 63)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More info on the Shockers.
Last season they had an RPI of 84 and played Penn. State, RPI of 14. They lost 62-56. They only played 6 players the whole game. All 5 of their starters this year played the most minutes last year. Of their 5 starters only #44 Michaela Dapprich has fouled out more than once this season.

One game at a time.

UConn could get upset before or by Cal - it happens. In the Men's March dance, the top seed wins the tournament only 13% of the time. To be honest, I'm not sure about WBB.

I think, in WBB, the only #16 team to beat a #1 was when Harvard beat an injured Stanford team about 20 years ago.

The RPIs listed on the NCAA site (as of March 14) were similar:
Wichita State - 40
Liberty - 63
Albany - 77
CSUN - 81

It doesn't look like RPIs were the deciding factor among the higher-numbered seeds. For example #11 seeds Miami and LSU had RPIs of 65 and 58, while all of the #14 seeds had RPIs between 47 and 53.

Looks like the Selection Committee wanted to give us a break in hosting the initial games, but then wanted to even things out by giving us the toughest opponents possible.

Looks like Sagarin's computer thinks Cal's entire pod was seeded too high and too low. Committee must have put weight on the Shockers and Hilltoppers SOS

My thoughts exactly. The #4 seed seems very generous, and then playing at home on top of that. Can't complain that the Bears were assigned to play the toughest #13 seed by far. Texas will be very tough, and probably ticked off they have to play us in Berkeley. (If I were in their shoes, I'd be really aggravated.) Then there's UConn looming in the next round.
