Per this sfgate.com report:
Freshman guard Breanna Cavanaugh has left the Cal women’s basketball team to focus on recovering from a concussion she suffered in September, head coach Lindsay Gottlieb announced in a news release Monday.

“After discussing the situation with Bre, her family and our medical personnel, we reached a decision that given her medical history, it was in her best interest to return home to New Jersey where she can fully recuperate,” Gottlieb said. “Her health and welfare is our No. 1 priority.”

There is no timeline for Cavanaugh’s return to the team, though Gottlieb said, “We’re looking forward to welcoming Bre back when she is fully healed and physically ready to participate.”
What was the significance of "given her medical history?" She has had this before?
To have to withdraw etc. I hope she is fine irregardless of her ability to play basketball....sounds damn serious.

Y'all can someone remind or tell me how Bre got the concussion? Did she run into a poll? Can't remember...

I wish Bre the best. But these situations are very sensitive/serious, so we must brace ourselves for the possibility that she is out a long time or even permanently (as was the case with Stanford's Kokenis a couple years ago).

During election season that's almost as dangerous as a debate.

Nice one, Stu, says BearBloke (and me, too).

I realize this news was buried inside a Courtney Range thread, but I'll add it to this thread as well to make it easier to find and reference.

Breanna Cavanaugh transfers to Rutgers

Speaking of departures, I noticed that Mercedes Jefflo's twitter account drew surprisingly little attention from basketball people (in terms of following and followers) after she was dismissed from Cal. One of the few exceptions (perhaps the only exception) was Rutgers assistant Kelley Gibson. I also noticed Jefflo recently started following Chrishae Rowe, the player who was dismissed from Oregon after one season, then dismissed again at her next school Kentucky, and is now reported to be visiting Rutgers this weekend per this tweet. If this is all connected, it seems possible that both Jefflo and Rowe may be joining Breanna at Rutgers.

:rollinglaugh:...that's what I get for typing fast, good one Stu.

So wait a minute: is this really about healing from a concussion or deciding you're "home sick"/want to play closer to home?

I've been waiting to see where Jefflo is going to land next I hope she gets a second chance, she learns her lesson and she runs with the opportunity.

If i was severely injured, I'd want to be closer to home.

From another thread:

I recall Oregon post player, Heater, who became injured as a frosh @ Cal and returned to her home state-never to return. I think that when a young person is in new surroundings, it it difficult to adapt when one suffers injury upon arrival. Sometimes they just want to go home to comfortable surroundings.

This also happened with Alex Rossi from Illinois on our men's team.

Jefflo is not going to Rutgers. Cavanaugh was not Home sick. She has been doing Physical Therapy and also Vestibular Therapy. Wish Cavanaugh stayed but if I had 6 concussions and lived in NJ I would travel back as well.

6 concussions? Wow. Wish her the best with her health. I guess the freak accident was not the only thing.

ditto. first time hearing she has had 6 concussions! This is serious. Think she might need a helmet when she plays in the future.

I agree she needs a helmet...I didn't even get a chance to get an autograph. hope she feels better.

Remember Robin Rostratter was wearing a helmet in volleyball because of concussion issues too. Think she wound up not playing her senior year.

I wish her all the best. With so many concussions she may want to consider playing at all. Stanford star Toni Kokenis had to retire after a pair of concussions suffered in one year: http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9512673/concussions-force-stanford-cardinal-toni-kokenis-retire

Stanford had another player, Jamie Carey who transferred after doctors there wouldn't clear her to play after sitting out two years with concussions...she ended up at Texas. http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=208067859

I wish Breanna all the best in her recovery and future schooling. She seems like a great kid and I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to really know her.

"Homesick" might be the wrong word. "Home connected" is what you are describing, and would also make sense.

Sigh. This gives me a headache.

I hope she does not get a 7th head injury. Geez.

Hope we can eventually keep 10 healthy on a team... is this too much to ask?

Made the mistake of looking at Jefflo twitter. Seems incapable of putting together an intelligible thought. How did she ever get into Cal?

Yeah, I read a few right after the dismissal and wondered if they were encrypted. But I expect that unlike prospective employers Cal admissions doesn't look up tweets.

I followed Jefflo's twitter for a while after she was dismissed. It seemed like she was not making very responsible choices with her life. I could describe it more specifically but that does not seem necessary.

edited to add: I stopped following her twitter feed because I felt uneasy about having an online association with life choices of that nature.

Generally, twitter posts are an even worse indicator of whether someone meets admission standards than those on fan message boards.... but only slightly! ;-)
