Did anyone see how she got hurt out above the top of the key? Did her leg give out on its own or was there a collision? Does it appear to be serious? If it is the season is over my friends...Now Cal is down to a starting five with Penina Davidson replacing CR. GO BEARS!

It was ankle/foot, not knee. (A good thing, given last year.) I wasn't focused on her when the injury happened, but she wasn't close to any other players. I am guessing that she jumped to pass the ball and came down on the side of her foot, rolling her ankle. On the bench, they taped it up and she put her shoe back on. A few minutes later, she was walking gingerly. At postgame, she looked a little better but definitely not 100%. However, it didn't look like any kind of serious or lasting injury.

Yes, ankle. Gottlieb thinks she'll be fine with some rest.

Thank you for your reassuring answers. I hope that she isn't out too long because it will be a struggle in every game without her.
GO BEARS!

It will be a struggle in almost every game with her. That's what keeps it interesting.

What about Bri. Should we expect her to be a blue shirt this year?

Do you know something I don't know 73. She is in New Jersey and not in school. Are you sure she is returning?

I was noticing a lot of players wear low tops
I'm pretty sure they all tape up, so maybe the support of high tops isn't important, but it would seem that good hightops laced the right way, along with the tapping would be helpful to reduce the severity of an ankle sprain (which is so common, especially for a post player)

anyone knowledgable about high level athletic thinking on this?

According to her twitter feed, Bre is transferring to Rutgers

Wish she were here, but all the best to Bre closer to home.

ccajon asked a question about Bri "blue shirting". I answered yes, she will "blue shirt" = red shirt everywhere else. Didn't say she was returning although Coach G talked about her returning next year. Guess the Rutgers transfer is something relatively new. Looks like we have another scholarship open.

Talk about unexpected bad news, of the wish I had never asked variety. I guess Bri thought that minutes for her would be limited,
with the possible commitment of SI? Sometimes, I get the feeling we have a silent commit that nobody knows about yet, maybe
an Aussie HS PG?

It's possible Bre wanted to be closer to home. When she signed she knew she would be competing with Mercedes and Gabby, and she should have known we were recruiting Asha and Sabrina. I didn't see any early practices so I have no idea how well she was playing before her injury.

I don't think we can be a very good team when Courtney is not on her game. She disappeared in the St. Mary's game, and that was before she hurt her ankle the next day. If there are physical problems, I would give her time off until the league season starts.

It's also possible she felt she didn't fit in with the program. You just never know -- we're dealing with teen-age girls, after all.

I recall Oregon post player, Heater, who became injured as a frosh @ Cal and returned to her home state-never to return. I think that when a young person is in new surroundings, it it difficult to adapt when one suffers injury upon arrival. Sometimes they just want to go home to comfortable surroundings.

I was wondering if there was more to moving back home than her injury. Wow, we are down to 9, 8 when Courtney is out.

Coaches, strength trainers, and young players always have to be careful about confirmation bias especially in the heat of a game. Ankle sprains can be mild to severe - and they have to heal without another episode - or the next one could be the last play of her season. Tightly taping or bracing the ankle puts more on other joints, specifically the knees... Cal does a good job protecting players.

Mercedes was gone before Bre returned home. With Jefflo gone and Sabrina an illusion, Bre would be playing significant minutes. More likely that she and her family are concerned of another concussion thousands of miles from home.
