Dammit, knew there was something up lately. CAL and OSU out. Now down to Oregon and now Washington in the mix?

I'm thinking she is a Husky now. Time to close the books on this chapter.

http://www.dailyemerald.com/2016/05/04/sabrina-ionescu-narrows-decision-to-oregon-or-was

"I have notified both Cal and OSU and let them know I have removed them from my final list, which now includes only Oregon and University of Washington," Ionescu said in a statement through her high school and club coach Kelly Sopak. "I hope to have a final decision by this month."

"Washington gave me my space and continued to recruit me during my entire process," Ionescu said in a Twitter direct message. "When it became clear that OSU and Cal were out, it was just natural that Washington and Oregon were left."

I like how Demetris Robertson had a lot of nice things to say about the other schools that he had considered besides Cal. With Sabrina, it is simply "You are out" and "You have been removed". At this point, I don't really care.

Totally agree. Not very tactful on her part or on Coach Sopak's part. She must see herself as another Kelsey Plum. So be it. Cal plays a team game, not the "it's all about me" game. Go Bears!!!

I don't think for her it is about a me "game" but agree not very tactful. Thinking lots of this dragging on though, was waiting for Washington to free up space for her. Not totally disappointed because really didn't think we had much of a chance for her, especially after a disappointing year. Think coachG really need a plan B..rather than her all or nothing plan.

I agree, Sabrina doesn't play like a "me" player.

Plan A: Ionescu. Not coming.
Plan B: One or two 2016 freshie guards. Getting kinda late for that. Mi'Cole Cayton? International player?
Plan C: Grad or JC transfer. Seems to work for our men. Talent pool too shallow?
Plan D: Develop Cowling, Mosley, and/or Brown as guards. Enough time?
Plan E: Nothing. Better than last season. Good enough?

Just because she was local, doesn't mean she has to commit to Cal. She has her reasons. The way I see it, it is her loss, not Cal's. We just move on to plans B & C.

I think that's the right way to take this kind of news. The only way, really. You wish 'em the best and move on to the next recruit.

Guess she will pass then also on playing in the WNBA. Wouldn't have much in common with most of those players either. Let's move on to bringing in a less-privileged kid who wants to play in the real world and get an outstanding education.

For whatever reason I heard she did not click with the players here and at OSU she did not click with the coaches there. Sopak is a Seattle boy who has a lot of influence on her and we already know about his Nike ties.

This recruitment reminds me of that of Kelsey Plum. Many here thought that she was the answer for Cal but she opted for the NW. If she wanted to commit to Oregon, she already would have...I think that it's UDub w/ this late surge!

Gottlieb is not getting it done in recruiting...Her recruit class of 2016 is ranked seventh in the conference [before Ionescu]. Stanford (4), ASU (5), Oregon State (4), Oregon (6), Washington (4), USC (4) & Cal (2)]. Obviously Oregon or UDub will catapult to the top of the class recruit rankings with Sabrina's pledge. Thank goodness that we're done w/ this game. Can you believe that she still hasn't commited but only cut her finalist's list in half? What a joke...

The Cal HC had better have a Plan B contingency option (guard) for this coming season. Everyone knew that the Bear's #1 recruiting priority was to add guard depth to this team for 2016-2017. GO BEARS!

This is really disappointing. She is the perfect fit for this team and would have gone on to be a local legend like Kidd or Rabb. I truly believe that we would be back to Final Four level with her on board. It's a frustrating road not taken. Now it seems we will be in scramble drill for depth next year.

Clay actually warned us way back when that he heard a buzz she probably wasn't coming our way. Sabrina walks to the beat of her own drum...I can see her at UW too, they are in rebuilding mode next season but being with Plum her freshman year to show her the ropes is a nice break in...
I always thought it was between OSU and Oregon but now we know... I don't recall hearing UW in the equation ever!

Be sure to tell Coach Gottlieb all this in person the next time you attend a Cal women's basketball home game. Oh wait.... Never mind. Please give your ranting a rest. Thank you. Go Bears!!

Every school loses out on recruits they really want if that school isn't named UConn, and probably even them.

My Bruins lost out on SI too... and sooooooo many other recruits, it'd be beyond tiresome for me to list 'em here.

IMO,JackBauerish has simply "hit the nail on the head" why SI is not coming to Cal.

If you look at other Cal women's sport teams like swimming, there is great camaraderie on the team in and away from the Aquatic Center. Missy came to Cal because of the great program, academics and very close friends she had already at Cal.

SI must have easily loved Cal academics over her other schools, but possibly did not have close friends she would spend time with away from BB. It would have been great if SI really enjoyed the chemistry of the current Cal team---which has a lot of great kids---but I regret thinking she probably prefers the players at places like UW, OSU or Oregon more than Cal.

So moving on.... LG and staff have to quickly check on some top college grad transfers, and community college or foreign student athletes which I assume from perusing posts here the staff is doing. Cal needs to find a game changer, not an average player.

I agree. The problem is that this late in the game there aren't a lot of game changers just lying around.

Word on the "street" is that she's going to Washington for sure. But we'll see. Lot of shake ups in just the last couple of days...by recruits and coaching staffs alike.
It must be a "choppy" time out there about now because "chatter" has picked up on the recruiting front lately.

As far as I know the current members of the basketball team all get along well and coachG gets them to activities together. Perhaps it is SI's "feeling" she can't get along with them.

I guess that we hit on the issue right there. I feel coach Gottlieb is middle [5-6-7] of the conference at best. She's a player's coach, she's likable but I see several areas that are deficient. Do you want me to send you a personal message itemizing 'em? Peace.

..I brought up Canada and Plum cause from my re-collection we were 2nd choice to their schools they selected, UCLA & UDawg. For SI, we were probably more like 4th choice.

Cal WBB. Very scary characters. How could one ever click with them? To be fair, that extra head Kristine or Gabby seem to have grown could scare away a recruit or two.

Had to do a bunch of moderation on this thread.

I'd like to think that Cal grads and Cal fans would be above some of the petulant reactions and innuendo-filled comments with little to no background knowledge that we've seen in this thread and occasionally elsewhere but that's sometimes not the case.

If some of the reasons offered were relevant in Sabrina's case, Cal wouldn't have been strongly in the mix with her for almost 4 years. She had plenty of time and opportunity to move away from Cal recruiting-wise if she didn't like most everything about the program and she didn't back off for good reason. And she and Kristine are good friends from their Team USA days on. Sharing limelight was zero problem. Sometimes what you might think as a fan makes sense to you just isn't true and that goes for some of the other speculation offered, too.

Look no further than where her AAU and prep coach is hired eventually to get your answers.

Sabrina's a great player. Now Cal just needs to recruit great players to guard her. I think Mi'Cole would be a great move in that direction because I think she's one of the few that can do it.

Yow, now that's some innuendo. Sometimes recruiting is just gross. Less on the women's side than on the men's, but if the above plays out... kinda gross, imo.

Wow! I have great respect for you, but why the censorship? What exactly did anyone say that you considered petulant? I've seen much worse at this site that was and is left untouched by moderators. What Clay posted about the program's perception should not have been deleted. This perception has been out there for years and provides insight to what LG has to deal with when it comes to certain recruits. If anything, it should bring greater appreciation for LG and the extraordinary young women who play for her. Did this perception even play into SI's decision making? Who knows? However, since when is speculation banned from BI? Speculation is a staple of this and every other fan site that exists.

If the reason SI goes to UW is because her coach gets hired there, that is short-sighted on her part but it makes some sense. That tidbit is huge news, but still doesn't negate the validity of some of the opinions being expressed.

As for bringing in Mi'Cole, this would be a great move.
MoragaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Have you talked to the recruits or their parents, 73? The speculation is amongst fans and is often irresponsible.

Clay was just responding to the code words used in this thread and he himself said he didn't have direct knowledge on the issue with regard to Cal.

In women's basketball in particular, players and families are very involved in message boards and if we see some irresponsible speculation going on, sometimes there's need for moderation. We don't see all the posts so if there are posts in the future that people are concerned about, report them and we'll check it out.

The comments about petulant posts were related to those angry with her decision and throwing stuff out there about her being a me-first, look-at-me player and lots of other stuff with no basis in personal knowledge when we all know very well that all of those people would've been happy to have her at Cal.

Gonna close this thread now.
