Fred Castro an assistant at Washington is about to be named the HC at Eastern Washington. Barnes the formaer assistant now HC at Arizona.

Neighbors's former boss did something very similar to get Kelsey Mitchell to Ohio State. Icky.

I've known some time she was not coming to Cal and even posted about it, didn't want to waste any time over it. Shame that the reason could be her AAU coach as in the long run, she will only have played for him i.e. HS, club, college, with a very brief stint in USA. WA learned a little something something from Kevin Morrison and McGuff Well she won't get better especially on the defensive end LOL.

Good grief, now an assistant can possibly get released at anytime (not in this case) to make a deal to get a recruit. I can see if he was hired as a head coach but that is just a little too much. Maybe a change of scenery with new coach would be a more healthy for her in the long run. I mean there is a limit and as a father I would say that to my daughter in that situation. You had a nice time with CAL Stars and high school....time to make the break and go out on your own like the other girls have done.

I would be disappointed too as you said if they contrived that situation.

I think the implication is that there are about to be two openings on the UW staff, because two assistants will have moved up to their own HC jobs elsewhere, not that two UW coaches will be fired to make room for any given recruit's club and/or high school coach.

she was one of the best bay area players in a long time
however we've got a ton of talent
we had 2 freshmen starters and 2 soph starters and no seniors
we also only had one true guard and overall zero depth
we've got some top talent coming in this year and will have more depth and experience
future is bright

If they aren't breaking the rules, then all you can do is say they played the game that was out there for them to play.
Cal basketball and losing great players is not new. Then finally a turnaround with Rabb. Hopefully the next one doesn't get away.

It appears to me the UW landing of Ionescu is similar to the dawgs' recruitment of Kelsey Plum. Neighbors learned from McGuff and Stan Morrison. Disappointing, but Cal will still net a strong class that will help the team.

Cayton would be a nice get. However, we just released the information on our new Aussie transfer. Coaches usually wait until they know for a fact they are done with recruting. What happened with the guard from Hungary?

True. Even if other schools are doing it... still don't have to like it. Hope it is not the case where the recruiting was dragged on, just so that coach Kelly gets one of those assist coach's positions ..allegedly.

To play Devil's Advocate, I will say yeah, I hope it was all about the coach getting the job. That would mean LG and Cal didn't play the game, and lost out for that reason, not because they were out-recruited.
And maybe in the end, she just didn't want to go to school so close to home. It was a key reason I went to Cal and not UCLA.

Wow, so he got the job?????? So this is out there in the internet world with Washington. How is the high school and CAL Stars reacting that he is going to be gone? You would think there would be action in the bullpen?

I was just reacting to the speculation, thus why I said "I hope". I have no inside information, nor do I pretend to.
"Out-recruited" just means not getting a recruit-is there some other way to take that? IF SI just decided she wanted to not be close to home, I guess that doesn't count as "out recruited." Who knows, maybe that was a late development for her. More than likely, when she does decide, its going to be "this is the place I feel more comfortable with" etc.

Nothing official, but I'm guessing we know more sooner rather than later ...

Washington also in the running for Lindsey Corsaso a 2016 SG from Indiana who de-committed from Kentucky and knows Sabrina from the McD's AA game. But Lindsey Corsaso is still considering 6 other schools while Romeo seems to be focused on UW, Oregon State, & ASU.

I never would have expected all these plot twists and extra factors with Ionescu's recruitment. Sopak might be a good hire regardless if a package deal with Ionescu, though. But kind of strange that the "package deal" of Ionescu getting her brother a spot on Oregon's MBB team would trump one with her AAU coach getting a job at UW. Honestly, I'd be concerned about leaving poor Eddy up in Oregon on his own—undoubtedly he will come in being known as the play who got a spot b/c of his sister, only for his sister to commit elsewhere.

Yes, Ohio State, Texas Tech, others have hired AAU/HS coaches with elite daughters, but definitely unusual here since Sopak, though Ionescu's long-time coach, isn't a family member. And while Cal hired Morrison for his AAU/HS connections in recruiting, it wasn't as much a "package deal" like this, more of a long-term connection.

I don't think May 18 matters at all. She can go to whichever of those schools she wants to whenever she wants to. The LOI deadline really doesn't affect Sabrina ... in fact, signing one only hurts her.

Negotiating these package deals to the highest bidder obviously takes time.

The whole trick with Sopak is to make it not look as they way we all will think it will look and pass NCAA muster. Timing is everything.

I don't think the NCAA has any jurisdiction over assistant coaches being hired who bring players with them. It's happened too often in the past with no repercussions ...

It's a tough call for Kelly -- a daughter entering high school, a good business, etc., but an opportunity that may never come again.

Actually this bright idea or maybe more like rumor came from this board first. Funny thing is it has never been confirmed or explored bythem edia or blog writers. Btw, I don't think Huskies or Ducks have a womens basketball board. I think they just cover mens sports.
