6-2 4 star 2017 La Jolla Country Day wing Alaysia Styles is on an official visit to Cal tonight and has a great relationship with Cal.

Here's her profile: http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/216824/alaysia-styles

Seen her team play at SMS MLK tournament past two seasons, didn't realize Cal is looking at her...

She is more of a power foward. She will be a four in college. People say she is the perfect four position for Kristine. She will grow to 6.3 at least. She can play inside and outside. We are her second favorite school. She is hoping for a Maryland spot. I know Maryland likes her too, she may even have a scholarship offer by them. However, she will not be their only talented wing/foward star. She is getting for a few other 3/4 players who are also considering Maryland. Like the number one player in the nation.

She has a Maryland offer already I wouldn't say Cal's behind anyone right now.

Maryland is DEEP this coming season and will be well seasoned come next year... I follow Maryland and I know what they have and what's coming in If she goes that route her playing time can be limited...

Who else are we planning to recruit for 2017? I know many targets for 2018/ and 2019. It seems like we are holding our own for 2017. Kiana smith and Alaysia were our two main needs and targets.
MoragaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They're definitely two high targets for the class, with one obviously on board already.

Cal's also still involved with Destiny Littleton to some extent and keep an eye on Juliana Louis (SoCal Select, St. Anthony's) and Tori Williams, too.

Lots of SoCal names. Is that by design, or just where the 2017 talent lies?

Williams is from Idaho

Also keep an eye on 2017 stretch 4 Taya Corosdale from WA.

Corosdale is an interesting-sounding recruit. Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation are both high on this 6'2" Forward who can defend the post, rebound and shoot out to the perimeter. She's described as long and athletic and can run in transition. Taya would be a nice compliment to Anigwe, West and Davidson on Cal's front line.

I am salivating over Alaysia Styles from this recent YouTube video!!!

I remember reading early on that she was a tall wing and an athlete. And I saw plenty of potential in previous videos I had seen.

But this latest video looks like she's really bloomed from an athlete with high potential and into a dominant beast! And her numbers confirm this: 10.2 ppg as a soph to 17.7 ppg her junior year! It seems as an underclassman Styles assumed more of a subordinate role behind UW-bound Mai-loni Henson, a year older. But this past year Styles took over the show!

And the great thing about that video is that she definitely looks suitable for the power forward! Nice height (looks a legit 6'2"), length, and QUITE a leaper! Very explosive, quick off the ground, not shy about crashing the glass, and can finish and put back 2nd chance points! I'm surprised she is listed as a wing b/c she seems to do most of her damage near the hoop. She's fast and has good handles and can go coast-to-coast like a wing, and she can also dribble drive and attack the hoop to score, but she seems best suited as an athletic 4-player, more so than Cowling. She only took 8 3-pointers this past season (made 4 of them) so I really think she can fill our need for a 4 without being "used out of position." She shoots 76% from the FT line (yay!) and her 2FG rate was 58%.

The evaluations of Taya Corosdale have been excellent. She sounds polished and versatile, and I get the impression she could be like former ASU star Emily Westerberg? (ironically also from WA and they even kind of look alike) But I can't imagine her having the athleticism and ceiling of Styles.

Kind of puzzled by Juliana Louis? Can't seem to find anything on her. Seems like 6'0"-6'1" forward Khayla Rooks of Mission Hills HS (#7 team in CA) and younger sister of Cal MBB player Kameron Rooks looks like a more proven option should we not get Styles (Rooks & Littleton the only juniors on CalHi's All-State team of 10 players, DeCosta being the only other underclassman). Though Rooks does sound a bit of a "great HS player but uncertain college prospect" type, maybe a tweener.

Back to Styles, unfortunately, Maryland still has 3 openings for 2017 despite the 6-person 2016 class, with 1 player recently transferring out. They were Rellah Boothe (consensus top 3 player) of Florida's explicit favorite early on, but now it seems Texas might have a shot. I can't argue it would be foolish for Styles to pick Maryland over Cal...I think it'll be a tough recruiting battle. But I definitely think we need her way way more.

I agree that virtually all her skill set displayed in the video appears compatible with the way Cal plays. She looks like that she finishes inside better than anyone on the current roster except for Anigwe. She also possesses a wider variety of shots... GO BEARS!

@Kat once again thanks for the 411 detail of the names thrown out to look for... would like more of a breakdown of Tori Williams I've heard of her.
My thing is if we go that route why not go for Julia Blackshell-fair then? Again, I don't know where she stands academically but Fairfield CA kid, a little taller than Tori and scouting ranking higher... I get an opportunity to check her out during AAU season with JBS.

They both shoot high off the glass with a good release instead of throwing it up. Nice to see.

Maryland in the 2016 class also has Kalia Charles, a 3/4 tweener, Stephanie Jones, a 4. They also have Gillespie (more of a 3, I guess) and Fraser (a 4) in the 2015 class. If they land Boothe, don't see how Styles will get any playing time. Hopefully we can land her.

I am still surprised Kakala chose Louisville. She will probably get 0 playing time her freshman year unless she's better than Fuehring, Shook and Johnson (plus DeGrate). Hines-Allen will be a senior in 2017 and has the "4" locked down (30+ minutes), that leaves 50 minutes for Fuehring (showed potential by end of the year) and Shook and Johnson at the 5.

Fuehring and DeGrate did not impress and I think Shook is overrated a bit. My impression is that Cierra Johnson is the only sure thing.

Nice!

In the video, some of her moves and motor remind me a bit of Ashley Walker. And that is never a bad thing.

It's great for Cal to get these early commits. It builds momentum, and not to mention a little less nail-biting for the fanbase! :p
