For some reason I was having a very hard time visualizing the team as a whole last night. I wanted to create this depth chart as a running tab. Am I missing anything? What are some major needs looking forward? Hope to add Cayton to this list shortly!

Not 100% sure but doesn't Sara Anastasieka have to sit out a year?

Outside shooting still will be a problem- although it seems Smith is a very good 3 PT shooter. 40 percent from beyond the arc last season? I will take that

yes, she does. but you'll notice the OP did not include her in the 2016-17 season for that reason.
I've just copied, pasted, reorganized for my own benefit.

Looks like we STILL need guards for next 2 seasons.

I'm not sure but I think Chen Yue took a medical blueshirt due to her broken foot. That would make her a freshie in 2016-17 (for athletic purposes).

Also I would call Courtney a W/F, Gabby a PG/G/W, and Kristine a F/C. And AFAIK we're expecting Ma'Ane to play G at some point.

Nice class balance. Also have the ideal number of players if we get Cayton.

If a non-starter for UTSA is the only shooting guard, that's an issue ...

And those who like big rosters will be happier, though if 10-12 get many minutes, it will not be a good sign.

Boy did we need Sabrina. Just look how deadly that roster is with her. The next two years we would be top 10/Final Four...I know I know, let it go.

We need another guard for next year very badly.

IF Micole Cayton commits to Cal for 2016-2017, then the Bears would have a dozen players on both the next two season's rosters. I'll stop complaining IF Gottlieb can pull that off...GO BEARS!

I think it is 13 players each year if we get Cayton. Depth is critical if you have injuries but LG doesn't appear to have much confidence in her bench. Last Dec she played the starters most of the game where we won by 40 points or so. That was after the triple OT game and even though that was something like 9 days earlier, the combination took its toll when they played Arizona. And they looked lethargic for most of the conference games afterwards. But the 3 days in a row in the Pac12 tourney showed that they could play hard in 3 tough games in 3 days. Maybe the freshman wall and other issues were the cause of the problems last season. It does look like these problems have been addressed and we will have more players. The conference has gotten pretty tough but other teams lost key players to graduation.

Most college coaches, for no apparent reason, play their starters until the final minutes regardless of the margin. It's the same on the men's side, and it's pretty odd, really. I would think avoiding injury and giving young players experience would be worth watching a lead shrink a little ... but they got a lot more money than me to make these kinds of decisions.

I think with a big lead it would make sense to play 1 or 2 lesser-used players for significant minutes alongside 4 or 3 regulars. That should do more for development than playing your last 5 together for a few garbage minutes.

You're a coach, I'm a fan -- I don't get paid anything for basketball decisions.

Stu, do you think Anigwe might play some PF with West joining the team at Center? Any reports on Chen Yue?

I have no inside info, I've never seen West play, and I've seen only a few minutes from Chen last year. But I don't mind guessing...

I'm sure we'll see Anigwe and Thomas on the floor most of the time, so the question becomes who will play the other 3 spots. Range and Cowling are talented, versatile, and experienced; they should play a lot. That leaves one starting spot and 2 or 3 rotation spots for everyone else. If we need speed and outside scoring that will probably be Mosley, Cayton, and/or Brown. If we need interior defense and rebounding that could be Waters (late bloomer?), Davidson (most experienced), Chen (tallest), and/or West (highly regarded recruit). With Green gone we'll need rebounding, and in the past we have played 2 posts together (Caldwell/Stallworth, Caldwell/Gray).

I'm sure Anigwe can play alongside another post, but I'm not sure if Chen or West will play better than Davidson. We might also do better with a faster lineup including just one post. I expect to see a lot of different combinations early in the season, should be fun to see what works.

I think Chen took a blueshirt year due to her broken foot and will be a soph (for basketball) next season.
