P.S. Yes, backpacks were allowed in Haas last season and, yes, the new rules apply to Haas as well as CMS.

I wrote a rather starchy response to the e-mail, with a cc to Jill Culbertson, and received a phone call from Gina (?) at Cal Athletics, poor girl--it can't be fun talking to irritated fans. She was very patient and polite, and it seems to be Cal BPD's idea/fault, if anyone's, but she didn't want to say so directly. I had suggested in the e-mail that fans be given free (sturdy) clear totes, and Gina actually mentioned the possibility of their being sold in Cal shops! Inconvenience us and then profit from it? Now that takes the sort of gall usually practiced by financial institutions.

Perhaps some generous alumni donors will spring for metal detectors...

Were backpacks allowed in before?

I received it but I thought the new guidelines were only for Memorial Stadium. I usually wear a small backpack into Women's BB and Volleyball - security always searches bags, backpacks purses etc. as we enter Haas.
OOPS! should have looked at the FAQ -
Will these procedures be in place at Haas Pavilion?
Yes. As a security precaution, backpacks and bags larger than 12" x"12" x 6" will no longer be allowed in Haas Pavilion beginning in August and the start of Cal volleyball season.

But I thought these rules applied last year -

Colorado is having a similar meltdown.

Here are the rules and regulations for Wembley Stadium (capacity: 90,000 shrieking football fans) in London, England, where they know a little something about terrorism:

http://www.wembleystadium.com/TheStadium/StadiumGuide/RulesnRegulations

Perhaps the prevalence of CCTV in Britain makes these relatively easygoing rules possible. I'm serious, though; I wish Haas and CMS would think about installing metal detectors if that would make Cal's cops "feel more comfortable": one reason the Cal Athletics rep mentioned for the new policy.

I know about the size limit on bags which applied last year, but I could not find anything about the bags or backpacks having to be clear for Haas. Did you find something that said clear bags only?

Thanks for the heads-up...got me on-line looking for clear bags. I wouldve been mad traveling all the way there to watch a game to find out couldn't bring in my backpack.

In reading the following, will my 100th Big game cushion be banned? It does have a small pocket.

Are seat cushions allowed to be carried into the stadium?
Yes, soft, flexible seat cushions without pockets may be carried into the stadium. Large traditional seat cushions that have pockets, zippers, compartments or covers are not permitted. Seat cushions that have rigid frames are not permitted.

Cal Volleyball posted this regarding the new clear bag policy at Haas

http://www.calbears.com/news/2016/8/25/volleyball-new-clear-bag-policy-at-haas-pavilion.aspx

So the backpacks have to not only be 12" by 6" by 12" but also clear plastic. Hope this clears some things up.

"In light of recent world events and with the recommendation of the UC Police Department and other security experts, Cal is implementing a plan the mirrors that of many NFL and Major League Baseball stadiums, including all of those in Northern California, and the majority of Pac-12 schools."

Just because everyone else is starting to do it doesn't mean it's necessarily the best option for you. I usually come to weekday games straight from work via BART and I carry my book bag with me on weekends as well because it has my laptop, book, etc., and you never know when you go to a coffee shop, especially in Berkeley. This policy means I will no longer be able to attend weekday games because what am I supposed to do with my bag that has all my work materials in it if I can't take it inside the facility?

Policies like this may work at Colorado or at NFL games when they (typically) only play Sunday meaning you aren't normally somewhere else before you go, but the Bay Area (and cities like New York for instance) rely on public transportation because it is not logical for everyone to have a vehicle here. And if you're not driving your own vehicle (like I would assume most in Boulder or Salt Lake or Pullman or Tempe or Tucson are), you don't have anywhere to put your stuff when you are coming to a 7pm Thursday night Cal-UCLA game straight from work in SF.

Yeah, Islanders, I still feel snarly about this, and you should certainly be able to attend weekday games without jumping through multiple hoops. Complain-- send what you posted here to both Cal Athletics and Triple Threat. Sometimes it works.

(Social Security just gave up their idea of making people text in order to access their on-line accounts, which are already pretty secure. Not everyone has or wants a cell phone--BearBloke lives cell-free--and a lot of us complained.)

Cal Athletics and Triple Threat, in case any of you read this thread, please note that if you're going to enforce such rigid policies, you should give us all free, sturdy clear bags.

The question to ask is how many other Pac-12 schools have such a policy. I say most do not. Anyone know the numbers?

This is my main complaint too. I also am usually coming straight from work on BART for weeknight games, and I attend both Men's and WBB games (in addition to football.) At least I don't carry a computer with me, but I have a backpack with my lunch bag and other miscellaneous items, and a purse (that is larger than a clutch.) Not to mention that we're only allowed ONE clear 12"x12"x6" bag per person, which is pretty small. They still aren't being clear about what type of packaging food will need to be in to be brought in. Most take-out doesn't come in clear containers/bags, and the food in Haas is pretty limited.

When I first saw the announcement email about the new bag policy about a month ago, I had a lengthy email exchange with my Gold Standard rep, and it sounded like they still hadn't figured out all of the details for Haas, other than that the policy would 'mirror' the Memorial policy. I will be very angry if they start banning umbrellas from Haas like they do at Memorial. At the time of the emails, they did NOT have plans to have a bag-check available for basketball games like they will have for football, when really it is needed even more for basketball with all of the weeknight games & commuters coming from work. I'm hoping they'll come to their senses & revise the policies. In the mean time, I found a decent zippered clear tote bag on Amazon that meets the size limit & has 2 additional small zippered pockets, for less than $15 I think.

Well, maybe this is why cargo pants were invented. (Along with my ancient Gore-Tex jacket, with its many useful pockets. It's going to get damp and chilly by November...)

My winter jacket has some pretty good pockets, but it's pretty damn hard to find any decent cargo pants or shorts for women. Designers seem to think that women shouldn't have pockets, yet Cal apparently thinks purses are dangerous.

Tell my employer to put cargo pants on the dress code and I'll (not gladly) wear them to work so I can attend a Cal weeknight game coming straight from SF via BART.

From the schedule release today: "Head to Haas Pavilion for Cal's home opener vs. Santa Clara and receive a clear bag as the giveaway item of the game on Monday, Nov. 14. The bags will be compliant with Cal's new clear bag policy, which is in effect at all games at California Memorial Stadium and Haas Pavilion this season."

Although I wish they gave an option to have clear bags shipped to us before the season. And maybe instead of just the opener, for all non-conference games.

FYI, they've actually decided that they are not employing the clear bag policy for volleyball season. So I'm not sure what the "in effect at all games at ... Haas Pavilion this season" means. Are they going to employ it for basketball but not Olympic sports (volleyball and gymnastics) in Haas? So confusing.

I emailed my Gold Standard rep today to inquire about this, hoping that perhaps they had come to their senses and realized that this policy was too extreme for basketball games which have much lower attendance than football games. But sadly, they still say that for both MBB & WBB games, they will be using the same clear bag policy that they have at Memorial Stadium this year. I told her that since I often come to games straight from work on BART, I might choose to skip some games because this policy makes that too inconvenient. Her response to that was, "If you need clear bags, let me know! We'd hate for you to stop supporting our teams because of the new policy." Because having to get all of the items that I normally have in my purse and backpack for a day at work and evening at a game into a 12x12x6 clear bag couldn't be the problem, I must just not know where to get a tiny clear bag like that. :facepalm
They are saying that there will at least be a bag check-in station for games at Haas, where you can leave your banned bags, but I don't know where they will have that and how secure that will be. I certainly wouldn't want to leave anything of value at a bag check station, and I know some people who come on BART from work have laptops with them.
I hope a lot of people make a stink about this policy & can get Cal to ease the restrictions for Haas events. I hadn't heard until I read some of the above today that they didn't end up following the clear bag policy for volleyball.
