Is Cal game on live stream [on-line] this Sunday @ 2 pm? Audio?

Actually the answer is yes if one scrolls down the announcement link above...

UCLA was up twenty at the end of the 1st quarter last Thursday night. Former Mitty star Kelli Hayes started for the Bruins!

I'll be there with a friend - maybe 4 others, have not heard from them yet. Since the game is free and they are cheap I am expecting to see them - not stabbing someone in the back, they admit they are tight wads! ork:

Apparently there is NO VIDEO on-line. Also-I cannot get the Live Stats to work, either? I guess that I'll go mail our (my wife and me) election ballots instead.

Westmont went 29-4 in NAIA action last season but lost to Cal by 52 and to UCLA by 45 the other night.

Not such an easy time this time for the Bears, with a 36-25 halftime lead.

The rookies have seen some good pt so far, with Jaelyn going 2-3 for 4 points with 1 rebound and 1 assist in 11 minutes, MiCole with 1-1 for 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 8 minutes and some tough defense plus CJ 2-5 (2-4 from line) for 6 points and 3 rebounds in 7 minutes. All 3 are going to be a big boost to the team this season. For some reason, they're not showing Mi'Cole's bucket now in the stats but it happened.

Asha leads the scoring at the half with 9 points on 4-5 with 1 3 pt bucket, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kristine's 3-3 for 6 points with 1 rebound and 2 assists. Mikayla's 2-3 for 4 points with 2 reb and 3 assists.

Really nice ball movement but they've been a little sloppy with the ball on occasion and missed a few steal opportunities with fouls when they got just a little too aggressive. Missed some opportunities to finish.

Considering they're outrebounding Westmont 18-8, have 2 less turnovers and are shooting 62% to Westmont's 37%, should be a much bigger lead by now. Good to see the new faces out there, though -especially making an early impact. No Chen sightings on the court yet.

Things really came together in the 3rd quarter, ending with a 62-34 Cal lead.

On the scoreboard: Asha 15, Kristine 14, Jaelyn 9, Courtney 8, CJ 6, Mikayla 5 and Penina 4.

MB-your game report update is much appreciated. Jaelyn Brown appears to be a contributor for this season! GO BEARS!

Yes, she is, for sure. She had 12 points on 5-7 shooting (1-1 from 3), with 4 rebounds and 5 assists in the 87-48 win.

Kristine led the scoring with 20 points on 10-12 shooting. Asha had 17 on 8-10 with 4 assists. CJ had 10 with 7 rebounds and provided muscle and a quick finish underneath. Penina had 9, Courtney 8, Mo 6, Mikayla 5 with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Mi'Cole had 4 assists but also 4 turnovers, though she was a spark plug out there. Chen got in for 7 minutes and had 3 rebounds.

Overall, Cal shot 64% and outrebounded Westmont 39-29, holding them to 30% shooting and forcing 19 turnovers to their 12.

Will need to see the team against better competition before knowing for sure what we have. But all three of the freshmen seem to have high basketball IQ's and instincts, which will get them playing time. Actually, this could be our deepest team, with nine to ten people who may be able to contribute as needed. Thus, playing an aggressive trapping defense, with liberal substitutions as we saw today, could be our best strategy with this group.

One hour and 35 minutes. That is how long it took to play the game. Makes a difference when their are no TV timeouts and no fouls called.

Defense. That is what i got that Lindsey wanted out of this bunch. We started playing better defense at the end of last year.. We are much more aggressive this year. Lots of aggressive traps. If you can beat the swarming defense then you can get a good shot. But oh those long arms coming at you everywhere. Starts with Range and Cowling double teaming you and Anigwe right behind them. You have to have lots of energy to play this way. And we look to be going 9 or 10 deep.

Thomas looks like an Allstar Pac 12 point guard. she made baskets everywhere and made some great passes. Anigwe has stepped up her defense by loads and also her leadership.

The frosh have lots of energy but are a little inconsistent. But they are athletic and in your grill. I said that during the scrimmage that Brown was quite a leaper. And you could see that today. Cayton was use to the frenetic [ace that was used at St. Mary's of Stockton.

Davidson looks very thin but very active. she has a new haircut that makes me think she looks like a young Winona Ryder.

Really no one looked bad. Cowling was really in control. Too bad more people couldn't make it.

The athleticism, energy and hoops saavy of the freshmen provide Lindsay with the depth needed to sustain a pressure defensive scheme. I'm interested in how MiCole pressures at the point. She and Thomas could make quite a tandem at PG at both ends of the court.

I have a question from the boxscore: how did Westmont grab 20 offensive rebounds against a tall Cal team? If my memory serves me, didn't the Bears give up too many "O" boards last year, too?

Btw, Saint Marys and Santa Clara were good bball teams last season. The Gaels & the Broncos may provide the test that this team needs...GO BEARS!
MoragaBear

They got a lot of lucky bounces. There was one possession where I think they got 4 offensive rebounds where balls caromed high, up and over multiple Cal defenders.

Westmont was also very active so give them credit there.

MB is right that there were many lucky bounces, but Westmont also missed quite a few 3's which resulted in long rebounds.

Here's the video from today:

Hard to hear the questions and unfortunately, the audio cuts out towards the end of my question to Jaelyn and for all of her answer before the volume returns.

Part of the reason is the defense they are playing. All their bigs are outside applying pressure. Thomas is not out there. So if you can get a shot off, there is not as much help inside. You should like this as they have a 3/4 trap press with this which rolls into a 3-2 zone if you get across the 10 second line. The 3-2 zone is a little different than last year with the point more collapsed. When you cross the mid court line there raps come on the sides. Sort of like where the North Carolina men used to set up their traps. This defense is trying to create turnovers, unlike the Stanford defense which is trying to make you shoot a poor per cent age. Still haven't figured out all angles yet.

This year we have the depth and athleticism to do this. In the past Lindsey wanted to do this but didn't have the depth. Providing no one gets hurt, should be a fun year if you like defense.

Couple of notes. Brown is amazing considering she is coming off a severe knee injury. Thomas looks faster to me in year two of her recovery of a knee injury. Brown plays on the right side of the zone so when they break she will finish on the left side of the basket. And believe me she can finish and she is left handed.

I really admire Cowling for her willingness to convert to the guard position and for the huge effort she is putting into it. But I do hope that we can come up with a few more offensive wrinkles that will allow her to get more into the paint and along the baseline where her elevation ability is such a great advantage.

We are now up to five potential zone busters in the rotation - Range, Cowling, Thomas, Davidson, and Brown. But I think the key will still be Anigwe passing back out of the double team. Still didn't see that happen one single time yesterday.

I thought the Freshmen played well - trouble finishing but this was the first game.
Game against St. Mary's on Friday will be a better test. Hope to see you all at St. Mary's 5:30 tip.
St. Mary's arena is a small gym - great to watch a game and their concessions are better than Haas.:p

I really enjoyed the game, was great seeing the new players. Brown was impressive. I am looking forward to seeing more of Cayton also. She moves really fast and looks like she'll be exciting to watch.

I have a question about some of the plays with Anigwe. Several times there were some passes made to her while she was under the basket with 2-3 defenders there with her. The passes were made high and she pulled the ball down over the defenders. Are they able to pull these passes off because Anigwe can just jump higher than the defenders every time so she is able to get those passes? Or is there something else going on that I am not understanding?
wvitbear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think in this case it was because she was taller and could jump higher and they were shorter. If you attended the open practice you would have seen her dunk a few. May not happen as often against taller players.

The play is called 'the Anigwe-oop' named after RC Owen's Alley-Oop catches for the niners
