Saint Marys is 5-2 this season, only losing to #3 Oregon at home and to #8 Oregon State
on the road. The Gaels also defeated Washington State in Pullman.

This is the fourth consecutive year that these teams have faced off. St Marys has five
seniors on their 15 member roster versus Cal's four seniors. These teams know each other
well.

Although #13 Cal is undefeated (7-0), they have not played a complete game yet. Every game has
been close at intermission. Aussie senior center McKay (6-3) played Bear senior C Anigwe to a stand-off
last season in Berkeley: 17 points each. This year the Gaels are loaded w/ five three-point shooters. Four
hit between 42.1-44.4% from the field. This team is a bad matchup for Cal. I predict that SM will lead by ten at half and that HC Gottlieb's pep talk will be unable to motivate Cal to climb all the way back...

Ball handling is a weakness on both squads. SMU averages 18 TOs per game nearly identical to Cal. The problem is that Cal does not full-court press nor half-court trap this season to apply pressure on their opponent.

https://calbears.com/boxscore.aspx?id=17169&path=wbball

This game is a trap game and Cal will be outplayed by Saint Marys. Last season the Bears outscored the Gaels 87-80 in Berkeley. Cal was on-fire with six players scoring in double figures. The Bears #2 Cowling, #3 Cayton, # 4AT & #5 Davidson scorers (see boxscore above) will not play for various reasons [2 graduated + 2 injured]. Cal hit 8 threes to offset Saint Marys eight treys but those three Bears (Cowling, Cayton & AT) will not be available this afternoon.

GO BEARS!

Asha Thomas starting for Bears.

Asha Thomas is in starting lineup! Halftime: Bears 41, Gaels 41. Negligible defense has been on display so far.
Live Stats does not work for me? Does Anigwe have one foul or more? St Marys out rebounding Cal 23-16 per their announcer. Eight are on the offensive glass. Cal's woes on defense are a lack of footspeed and proper position to stay with their assignment.

This game is absolutely up for grabs! Offensively-this was Cal's best 1st half this season. GO BEARS!

Gaels blowing out Bears in 3rd quarter. Anigwe is the only Cal player to make a basket w/ score 58-45 midway
through the period.

We're not going to do a game thread with a predicted loss in the title.

Box score is in the game thread

Not so S71. I know you, as a big Cal fan, are bery happy that your prediction did not come true. With a big come back,

CAL WINS! CAL WINS!

Cal 81-78 in OT!

OK, OK, you were right for 2.5 quarters, then the Bears came out of hibernation.

Go Bears!

Wow-incredible comeback victory in overtime on the road! All the things that I predicted happened but Cal DID fight all the way back to pull out the win to stay undefeated (8-0)! Anigwe tied it with a layup with 2 seconds remaining in regulation to send it to OT. Anigwe missed her overtime shots but made a great cross court pass
to Kianna Smith for a wide-open three to give the Bears the final lead over the Gaels. Recee Caldwell registered
her best offensive game by far as a Golden Bear with 20 points! Most of the second half it was primarily Anigwe
and Caldwell providing the scoring for Cal. CJ West had a few complementary points, too. Asha Thomas and Kianna Smith disappeared the entire second half but came through clutch in the overtime.

I'm happy to eat crow as long as the Bears remain perfect! Cal's next game should not provide so much drama
against my alma-mater, UCSB (2-7). Go Gauchos! GO BEARS!

S71 is a BIG Cal fan and bleeds Blue and Gold like me. For that, I love him. He also does excellent thoughtful analysis of games. For that, I respect him.

Go Bears!

I didn't expect Asha to play today, and if she played I expected her to come off the bench and only played spot minutes

She played almost entire game!

Great clutch win!

Just back from Moraga. Great game!! "The Bear doesn't quit..."
Over half of the fans were Cal fans. Players were feeding off the loud crowd and Go Bears cheers.

That's great that team was supported by the cal fans on the road

They needed every ounce of energy and positiveness to pull that win out

I seriously think it would have been a loss without the cal fans there

1) However sincere his fandom, a head such as "Gaels to upset Bears today in Moraga..." makes me glad I muted S71 a long time ago.

2) Well, that was a truly exciting game. The Gaels were well coached and Cal clawed their way back with heart and vigor and some stellar defense. We sat behind C.J.'s family, who were very happy for her double-double.

He has never attended a game in person. For that I find it hard to believe he really bleeds Blue and Gold.

I guess that you guys don't want me to predict the outcome. I used to be the football writer for cyberbears' Chris Avery and I used to predict the outcome and the score in 2000/2001.

I am always rooting for Cal but I am not an alum. I do not wear blue 'n gold sun glasses. My career was as a financial analyst before I recently retired so I do an in depth "dive" (strengths vs weaknesses, etc.)

If the alums here want me to not predict the result-I can accommodate that request. I'll do my best.
Now that I'm retired and closing in on age 70, there's nothing to prove anymore. One's perspective
changes on such things as many of you already know. God Bless and GO BEARS!

This is a message board; it's all opinion. Unless an opinion is delivered with annoying all knowingness or the intent to be contrarian (or to troll), why wouldn't you be able to make predictions and analysis? None of it is mean-spirited. I don't think people here only want to hear how wonderful Cal is (again with the caveat that one's posts are not knee jerk negative as some poster's are).

Not to mention, your prediction was largely correct, save the final outcome.

I get the impression that perhaps your tone has rubbed a few people the wrong way and so they are opposed to whatever you write no matter how reasonable. I say keep it up, but maybe just be sensitive to when tone starts to read like Debbie Downer versus objective analysis?

Makes sense to me.

Last year we were a 41st ranked team that beat a 83th ranked SMC team by 7. This year SMC is probably no better as they got beaten easily by Oregon and Oregon State and beat Washington State, a team ranked 100+ (like our other opponents this year). Time will tell whether we end up a 13th ranked team or a 41st ranked team like last year.

S71's final prediction was right for 39 minutes and 50 seconds. If it wasn't for some incredible senior grit/leadership at the end, he'd be looking like a genius.

OSU beat SMC by 33 points
Oregon beat SMC by 24 points

I think BearB provides the correct solution. If you don't want to expose yourselves to S71's contributions, just "mute" him. The rest of us can judge which of his observations we wish to disagree with after we've read them.

I have followed S71 for years on this board and mostly others. He is brutally frank, candid, and without apparent meaning comes across as contrary. As I think back on his personna, it is more that he sees things a certain way that can rub some the wrong way. I have disagreed with him at times, have found many of the attacks on him a bit much, but have never questioned his love for Cal, especially considering he is a UCSB alum. He cares, he loves Cal. Agree or disagree he brings something special to the board. I will survive his tone to get the "meat" of his posts, whether I agree with them or not. Hang tough S71.
