The FOSH - UC Irvine vs. California Live Stats

Cal finished off the weekend with a 16-8 thrashing of the UCI Anteaters. Irvine defeated Fresno State this weekend and was rated two spots below Cal. The Bears impressive victories over Arizona State & UC Irvine
should move the team higher in the national polls and instill confidence in the team. Aussie Ruby Swadling led the way again today with three goals but Canadian Emma Wright had her breakout game with five goals. I know that three is called a "hat trick" but I don't know what five goals in a game is called...The defense and the goal keeping seems to be improved over last season. The closest contests were two 12-8 wins over Michigan and Fresno State.

Cal kick-offs the season with 4-0 record over three days. Bears easily defeated #4, #7, #8 & #10. This morning Michigan beat ASU, 10-8, too. GO BEARS!

Thanks for the update, S71.

Looks like SC & Furd start their seasons next Saturday 29th.

Ucla has had 3 dominant wins, including a 20-3 thrashing of #21 Cal Baptist U. yesterday. Today, they play #9 UCSD and #18 UCSB.

Thank you as well for the updates.

Note also that Cal traveled with 20 field players...In addition to the thrashings of UCI and ASU, they were up against Michigan 8-2 at halftime then 9-2 in the third; and up 9-3 over FSU at halftime.

That's some impressive play against solid squads that this group, adding Wright and Swadling plus freshmen over last year, struggled mightily to put away last year.

Four games this weekend at Spieker against a couple more solid albeit tier 2 teams should be interesting, including FSU getting another shot at the Bears first thing Saturday morning.

Go Bears!

Edited to add:

Looking at the preseason rankings, it sure looks like it was heavily weighted on last year's finish...especially putting ASU over Cal with the Bears winning 2 of 3 last season, the Sun Devils losing their best field player (Rogge) and starting goalie while the Bears added Wright (Canadian NT/Olympian) and Swadling (Aussie NT pipeline).

Stanford will be tough with two US Olympic team members and an alternate returning to the squad, but is breaking in a new GK.

UCLA brings back the USA Olympic team Tokyo MVP, but could be stronger in that Bronte Halligan (Aussie NT player) didn't return to complete her eligibility.

USC welcomes back one each of USA and Aussie Olympic team members and Spanish WNT pipeline player.

Hope the Bears can crack the top tier and win their first NT! Go Bears!

Cal should jump at least one notch to #4 if not higher. This weekend in Berkeley, Cal faces #10 Fresno State, #12 Long Beach State, #13 Pacific & #16 San Jose State. The Bears need to stay focused but should be able to handle the competition. GO BEARS!

Cal 12, Fresno State 7 in opener in Berkeley. Bears played most everyone, and as a result, didn't have much offense in the 2nd half (3 points). Ruby Swadling was invisible offensively with zero points on a single shot. She did have two steals. Entering the game, the Aussie was tied for second in goals w/ 9 in four wins. The offensive star was senior Emma Wright with 4 goals in 5 attempts. Ten saves by Cal's starting goalie, Isabel Williams.

Cal 11, Long Beach State 3.
The Bears were held to a 1-1 pitcher's battle in the first quarter but displayed more energy in the 2nd period. One observation was the the 49ers shutout the Bear's centers from scoring. However, I guess that Cal likes to run their offense inside-out. Although the center passes resulted in double-digit turnovers, Cal still scored most of their goals on outside shots.

The Bears also had a breakaway goal by frosh Emma Singer and a goal by Isabel Williams at the buzzer at the end of the 3rd quarter. Cal also scored on a penalty shot by soph R Whitney.

The FOSH - Long Beach State vs. California Live Stats

Most of the scoring came from frosh-soph players (6 of 11). Very few shots were skip shots during the game. LBS had at least a half of a dozen shots hit off of the cross bar that could have been goals. They shot almost every attempt high.

San Jose State (6-2) is on tap late this afternoon @ 4;30 pm.. GO BEARS!

Cal 17, SJS 10 in the nitecap! The Bears tied their scoring high for the season w/ 17 goals. However, the defense gave up two more goals to the Spartans than any other team. The goalies split the time with 16 minutes each. The starter, Isabel Williams, yielded 4 goals but the backup, Barnuevo, allowed a half dozen (6). Cal played the majority of its players w/ the freshmen and the sophomores tallying 5 goals each.

The FOSH - San Jose State vs. California Live Stats

Frosh defensive specialist, R Voorvelt from the Netherlands, led the offensive attack with three goals which just happened to be consecutive. It appeared that San Jose State figured out Cal's defense after the end of the first quarter. Thereafter-the Spartans did not have great difficulty scoring, averaging 3 goals per quarter. They also shot a higher percentage (.370) than other opponents have done.

Cal is now 8-0. Nobody has played the Bears a close game, yet. Two outcomes were 12-8 or a four - goal margin.
Obviously, it will be a different story against the three Pac 12 teams ranked ahead of us. GO BEARS!

#4 CAL at #2 Stanfurd

Some factoids about this particular rivalry showing a Cal win would be a pretty big deal:
  • Going back to March 1999, Furd is 40-6. They once had a 24-match win streak over Cal from March 2001 to April 2015.
  • Furd is currently on an 8-win streak. Two of those matchups had mere 1-pt margins, including the last one on April 2021. Will the tide turn this Saturday?
  • The last 2 Cal wins were both AT Stanfurd: 8-7 victory on March 2018, 5-2 victory on Feb 2016.

The Saturday 10:30 meeting is the only one for Cal that day. On Sunday 10:00 Bears play ASU. It looks like the Furds, however, have 2 more matchups on Saturday (4:45 vs #9 ASU, 5:45 vs Fresno Pacific???) and Sunday 10:00 vs #11 SDSU.

Great factoids! Regardless of what happens Saturday and though it is early in the season, this looks like the most competitive Bears team in several years.

Looks like game times have been updated:
  • Saturday: Stanford@10:30 (stream here)
  • Saturday: UC Davis@3:30 (UCD will have just played ASU at 12:45)
  • Sunday: ASU@11:15
Stanford website not posting anything about streaming non-Stanford games. Live stats on the FOSH

This week's rankings should be out later today...not expecting the Bears to move up, but there will be movement below immediately them as Michigan beat Hawaii over the weekend. Note: UCSD is #11 while SDSU is #19.

Go Bears!
