watched usc cal game. first set not very good as receiving and passing was terrible. they picked on leah and obvious why. serves to mostly leah all match. then it puts the setter in poor position and maeder is not a great setter anyway and the htters had a difficult time. second set was much better with in system passing. they only had 13 kills but 7 service aces out of their 10 total. usc helped with service errors as well. The third and fourth sets they stayed close but firepower of usc made it difficult. last set, cal only had one error on hitting, but again passing and setting made it difficult to get hitters good swings. maeder is ok as setter but sets were inconsistent even though she has been main setter. This match jensen set alot more than whole season. she is much better digging and serving but is only 5'8 and blocking suffers if she has to block. on good passing and setting, she will rotate to back. they never gave up. still playing hard. they are getting better with the three freshman playing alot and well. areas of improvement are receiving and passing and defending better. setting can be better but will need a new setter if maeder does not set more consistently. if they play like this may have a chance against ucla. I doubt playing more of cal's reserves will help them. seeing some of them last year and the senior and lefty player is ok. not better than the freshman that are now playing more. if cal can continue to improve through the rest of the season and get a couple of really good recruits, Sam may stay one more year. IMO hard to recruit an outstanding volleyball coach to Cal.. it would be a young outstanding potential assistant coach or established middle level head coach. we will see.
