The article doesn't say whether they're replacing Jenn Dorr and/or Octavio Souza.

I've been a Jenn Dorr fan since she was a setter for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine VB team. Unless she's voluntarily stepping down which created a vacancy, this one hurts.

Since neither additions have prior coaching experience, except Savannah was a volunteer coach at USC, I wonder if one might be Director of Operations and the other as a Sports Performance coach like that at Stanford. Just a wild guess!

welcome to the new coaches

Savannah had a really tough health history while at Cal. Great to see she bounced back as a player, and now as a coach!

It's still lends itself to a crappy season next volleyball season unless they get rid of Sam.

looks like savannah may be the recruiting co-ordinator and crissy assistant coach. maybe for octavio. hopefully dorr stays. too bad she was not named head coach. she did a great job as interim coach. amazing she stayed on staff for this long. maybe she is the one leaving? don't know. probably hard to get a high profile coach to come to Cal. sam may be gone after this year if team does not do well. rennie had more talent than anyone on the present team. esp since grote is gone. pisses me off how bad Cal teams are. except gymnastics. there are those who want gymnastics gone, but they probably draw more than womens BB. and they win and are exciting. and they continue to get younger and better!!!. for me no more womens BB or mensBB season tickets. my nice paded seats are gone. sansei bear, you know how i feel. maybe i need to go to hawaii and visit you !! smile. !

I hope Jenn stays as well. If she's being forced out, I'll devote all of my diminishing energy rooting for the Rainbow Wahine VB team.

Where did Lydia Grote end up?

Come visit me in Hawaii!

thanks sanseibear.
have not found anything on lydia . however i found that a louisville transfer is coming to Cal. she was an all american high school setter but did not play much since louisville went deep into the post season. so probably wont be anounced till the second portal opens up. if she is as good a setter from high school that would certainly help as our present setter just is not good IMO enough. so we will see. now if they could get an established outside hitter that would help even more. maybe lydia will stay. it has been a month. or maybe she wont announce it till open portal time.

i will be fully retired by june 2023. i will still coach girls basketball and tennis and play lots of tournaments. i have a young sharp local born eye doctor to take over my practice. she is great and i am not worrying about the business getting in trouble. the patients love her so i am good to go. you are probably on oahu? UH is there in honolulu. it has been since the late 80's to oahu and maui. i kinda of got island fever being out in the middle of the ocean!!. If you come to nor cal you need to let me know. we can go out to eat and enjoy the outdoors. i have season tix for football still section F under the rafters. take care chris.

Small world! I used to have season tickets in Section F, row 40, seat 10 (I believe), but I stopped after the 2018 season. I haven't been back to CMS since then, especially with the pandemic situation and my age (84 this month). Yes, I live in Honolulu.

I was thinking of going to see a volleyball match this coming season since I do help them out by buying season tickets, but only if Jenn is still there. I used to take Hawaii delicacies for her and the team. Let's see what happens in the next few weeks (months).

Take care!

louisville went and lost in the finals to texas. lazaro was their all american setter. she used to set to USC. she was pac 12 freshman of the year for USC when she went to USC. i remember her setting. i thought she graduated. that is why the new setter for usc this past season was there. well she went as a grad transfer to louisville and took them all the way to the finals. they beat oregon in semis 3-2. paige blue shirted 2021 and was in competition to set until lazaro transferred. I guess they got another transfer setter so paige decided to transfer too. lets hope she does transfer to Cal. keeping fingers crossed. not final till they sign agreement. paige was pennsylvania gatoraide player of the year apparently and also pennsylvania high school player of the year. high school all american as well. she is a BA major so maybe hass business school potential? time for bedtime.

Jenn is the Associate Head Coach, so I would doubt they are replacing her with these two assistants who have far less coaching experience.

Maybe no one is leaving. Starting this fall, both men's and women's basketball can add two assistant coaches. The only stipulation is that they can't recruit off-campus. Perhaps volleyball is allowed to do the same.

good catch bear 72. probably reason if volleyball also has that privilege to add two more assistants. lets hope the louisville portal transfer does indeed sign with Cal.

Totally agree about Jenn!

I watched the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 1st round NCAA match against LSU at Stanford on ESPN+, and when the camera caught Jenn sitting in the stands behind the Hawaii bench, there were a number of posts from Rainbow Wahine fans on the game thread about her. Hawaii fans are so passionate and appreciative about remembering players who represented the school well, and Jenn is one of them.

When Cal becomes a decent team again, I'm sure they'd be invited to come back to Hawaii to play. They were supposed to have come in that first COVID season, but Hawaii and the Pac-12 cancelled the fall season.

Are you talking about Paige Morningstar from Louisville?

If so, her Instagram page shows her decked out in Cal gear and on campus on January 19.

Plus, this from NCAA.com on volleyball transfers 2023:

Other transfer notables include: Paige Morningstar, Louisville to Cal (setter)

Savannah Rennie will be our recruiting coordinator according to the CalBears.com story I posted.

Not a good sign that Jenn is returning. Under the staff directory for Volleyball the 2 new assistants are listed but Associate Head Coach is a "TBA" .

This may be a result of a compromise reached between Crosson and Knowlton.

Does JK ever exert pressure on coaches to make changes? I haven't heard of that happening in other sports. And why would JD leaving be desirable? I wonder if she just got a HC gig somewhere?

Well, when you finish 0-40 in the conference the past two seasons, something has to give.

I have NO idea what the future holds for Coach Jenn Dorr. There was no mention of her in the press release I posted. My comment about a "compromise" had nothing to do with her.

Knowlton doesn't have direct oversight over VB, or any sport. Crosson reports to Josh Hummel, the team administrator. Discussions about assistant coaches and future employment would fall under his purview.

It is an often used tactic. If the HC is failing, dump the assistants. It usually buys another few years, and maybe a turn around.

The free-fall in volleyball and women's basketball is breathtaking in a bad way. I honestly don't understand how they've both been allowed to collapse without a change in coaches. For me, the buck stops at the AD office since he's in charge of all sports and aside from aquatics which have been strong for decades, gymnastics, and a few standout track athletes, it's been a horror show. Men's golf has a great recruiting class coming in. Women's golf continues to suck azz, baseball the same, softball - meh, and frankly, rugby is a side. Wow.

Ever since Crosson was unable to compensate for the Mirkovic injury that took her out for a couple of weeks, it has been .... not good for Cal Volleyball.

Symbolic is that Carli Lloyd's number hasn't been retired, despite Crosson saying on a 2020 zoom call that there were plans to commemorate Lloyd.
