Did anyone go to the volleyball game? Who won?

Aggies won. Took it three sets to 2. We dominated in the second set, won the third.

It was an exhibition match. I imagine the new coach was experimenting with lineups.

Still surprising to lose at home to UC Davis. When was the last time that a major sport lost its exhibition game?
Bad Omen.

It's a scrimmage….you are supposed to play different lineups, experiment, etc

Cal softball lost to Sac State during fall ball and guess what? It had no impact on them making it to the tournament because ITS A SCRIMMAGE

I don't know how to screenshot and copy stats here:
https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=541272

Don't know if there are injuries, but Malcolm only played a few people:
Maggie Li
DeJardin
Hayden
Ashley Li
Thomsen
Maeder
Johnson
Bartolo

So, no Scott, Morningstar, Hamm, Merhten. No grad transfer Antonio. No freshmen players.

I also thought SamT was coming back, but she's not on the roster.

Maggie led with 10 kills, 9 digs, 3 blocks and 200 (30 attacks)
DeJardin with 9 kills, 5 digs and 222 (27 attacks)
Hayden with 7 kills and 6 blocks and 278 (18 attacks)
Ashley Li with 4 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks and (ugh) -167 (18 attacks)
Thomsen with 5 kills, 1 dig, 4 blocks and 556 (9 attacks)
Maeder with 4 kills, 5 blocks and 27 assists
Johnson is on the score sheet with a service ace and 3 digs
Bartalo with 5 assists and 22 digs

As team, Cal hit 213. (Nevada hit .093)

The pickup of Bartolo seems particularly important this season.

Bartalo is filling the void from the graduation of libero DeSa. The only other player used in three matches was the 6-2 frosh MB, Mansfield, from Texas in the final against Portland State. I guess that the new HC is attempting to settle on a starting lineup.

Hamm also saw the court against Portland State
Mansfield also saw the court against San Francisco.

Still, no Scott, Merhten, Antonio or Morningstar. I don't know how good Antonio is but she is a senior transfer and 6'4". Ashley Li is not doing great to start the season, so perhaps we will see them soon (unless some are injured) Understandable to not see Morningstar given Maeder's play.

I was surprised that frosh Grace Agolli has not seen any action.

FWIW- Antonio appeared to be limping a bit after the match. Her leg also appeared to be wrapped up or had some type of compression on it.

Although our official Cal website doesn't show it, ESPN+ will be streaming Thursday's matches against #8 Purdue and Utah. Hopefully, it will do the same for Friday's match against Utah State.

Purdue is #8 and 3-0 in the latest AVCA rankings (Sept 1).

We lost to Utah (2-3) in our only match with them last season. It was also in Salt Lake City.

Cal played the 8th ranked Purdue Boilermakers very tough. Bodes well for the rest of the season as the players further acclimate to the new coaching staff.

In yesterday's 2nd set of Utah's match, Allanea Maeder went down with a leg injury and was replaced by Natalie Lau who played the rest of the match. Does this mean Paige Morningstar is also not available for today's Utah State match?

Here's a possible streaming link for today's match: https://utahstateaggies.com/watch/

I do wonder what the story is with Morningstar - if Lau is getting Meador's time on the court.

When the camera panned the team in the huddle in the 4th set, I didn't see Morningstar and Sophie Scott, although they could have been out of view.

I must say I was impressed by Natalie Lau's play!

Scott apparently tore her ACL last spring and is redshirting this year.

Mahalo, ncbears!

Natalie Lau is playing extremely well, but I wonder who her backup is since Morningstar hasn't played this season and Maeder's injury appeared serious. True frosh Grace Agolli was a setter/OH in high school, but I haven't seen her on the bench. Stay healthy, Natalie!
