Estonian breaststroker Egle Salu has committed to Cal:

Cal breaststroke is in very good hands. She'll have 3 years of training with the incoming freshmen duo of Elle Scott (top US junior breaststroker) and Silje Slyngstadli (Norwegian elite breaststroker), and 4 years training with 2026 classmate Halle West (Canadian junior team breaststroker).

30.9/1:09.3 LCM Breaststroker Egle Salu Announces Commitment To Cal For Fall 2026

Egle Salu of Rakvere, Estonia, has committed to swim and study at Cal, beginning in the 20262027 school year.

The Estonian most recently competed at the European Junior Championships in July, where she walked away with silver in the 50 breast. She clocked 31.19 in that final after logging 30.98 in prelims, which just missed her lifetime best of 30.97 from the Akvile Lietuvos Plaukimo Cempionatas meet in April.

If she transitions smoothly, she's in position to challenge for the team's best sprint breaststroker, especially for the 50 breast leg of the 200 medley relay.

Salu will join a breaststroke group that is heavily rebuilding with two top-tier commits just arriving on campus. The #12-ranked recruit in the high school class of 2025, Elle Scott, had the fastest 100 breast time in the class at 58.56. This will make her the only swimmer on the Cal team under 59 seconds in the event, and puts her just outside of 'A' final scoring position at NCAAs, coming in at 13th overall with 58.30 placing 8th.
Scott's 200 breast of 2:08.62 would have been first alternate last year, less than a tenth outside of finals scoring position.

The Golden Bears also now have Norwegian Worlds qualifier Silje Slyngstadli. She was 29th in the 100 breast at the World Championships in Singapore and her best time of 1:07.53 converts to 59.83, which is about three tenths over the cutline.

Cal had one individual breaststroke scorer last year in rising senior Abigail Herscu. Her 2:08.47 in the 200 breast garnered her 8th at NCAAs. She also swam the 100 breast, finishing 28th with a new career best of 59.97.

Salu joins the Golden Bears' class of 2030 with Isabel Wolk, Ava DeAnda, Kelsey Zhang, Madeline Kohel, and Halle West.

It looks like Cal will evolve into a breaststroke power as all of these young ladies join the team. It's been a while since the female Bears have dominated in this event. GO BEARS!

As of today, looks like Kassy Yeung and Aukan Goldin have yet to sign NLIs/have their documents processed by compliance. Yeung should hopefully be signing soon; she was racing at Chinese Nationals this past week and a half. Everyone else is official.

Bears have also added Egyptian Olympic diver Malak Tawfik to the squad, another big welcome to her.

Maddy Kohel write-up by Swimswam. Looks like two outstanding divers for the 2026 class.

RipFest Diving Club's Madeline Kohel has committed ot the University of California as a part of the Golden Bears' 2026 recruiting class.
Kohel was ranked the #2 diving recruit in SwimSwam's ranking of the top 10 diving recruits in the girls' class of 2026.
Quote:

I'm so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley! I can't wait to continue my academic and diving career at Cal. Thank you endlessly to my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me throughout this journey. GO BEARS

Kohel hails from Minneapolis, Minn., where she represents Minneapolis Washburn High School. She has collected a pair of MNSHSL Girls Class AA State championship titles on 1-meter. As a sophomore, she notched her first state win, with a score of 520.20.
The following year (2024), Kohel repeated as champion on the 1-meter, scoring 479.05.
Kohel competed at the 2025 USA Diving Junior National Championships, where she earned a podium finish, placing 3rd on 1-meter (371.25), and also took 23rd on 3-meter (224.25). In her career, she has been a five-time finalist at the USA Diving Junior National Championships.
Best Scores:
  • 1-meter: 449.60
  • 3-meter: 434.45
  • Platform: 294.35.
The Cal women finished 4th at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships and 8th at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships last season.
Kohel will join Malak Tawfik in the 2026 diving class for Cal; Tawfik was a 2024 Paris Olympian for Egypt. The two will add much-needed depth to this Cal diving group.
Cal's highest-scoring ACC Championships diver a season ago was Violet Williamson, who finished 20th in the 1-meter (237.10) and 21st in the 3-meter (264.90).
Williamson was the lone Golden Bear female diver at NCAAs last season as well, finishing 43rd on both 1-meter and 3-meter, outside of scoring position.
Kohel joins Isabel Wolk, Halle West, Kelsey Zhang, Ava De Anda, Kassy Yeing, and Egle Salu in Cal's 2026 recruiting class.
