Injuries.
As SFCALBear72 said injuries. From the season's outset, Scott, Agolli, and Morningstar have not played at all with Scott redshirting for this season. Maeder went down in the 5th match against Utah with a leg injury and Hayden suffered some kind of injury in the road match last weekend against Louisville.HateRed said:

Today, I watched the match on ESPN+. Although Morningstar and Hayden were not dressed to play, they were mobile while Agolli was on crutches. I didn't see Maeder at all.
Hopefully, Hayden will be back for Sunday's match.
Maeder was sitting in the stands near the team with crutches next to her.

I was concerned about today's match since NC State took one set against Stanford last Friday and was competitive in two other sets, but the Bears came through today passing, blocking, and attacking well.SFCALBear72 said:Bears needed this!SanseiBear said:

Nc State looked tired too. Wake Forest was much better. We played better as a team.
I hope BC doesn't come back and take it 3-2!!!

What a miraculous comeback, considering the number of players who are injured! The next four matches against Pitt, SMU, and two against Stanford will be overwhelming, but let's enjoy this win with the young women! GO BEARS!SFCALBear72 said:

I noticed that the Bears were getting dominated in the initial two sets. Syracuse was 0-4 in conference so I thought that Cal would be competitive. What changes did they make to win three consecutive sets & the match?

whatever good the win over Syracuse had was quickly dissipated today against #1 Pitt.

Obviously they are #1 for a reason but woof... that's a good ol fashioned A** whooping.
Cal was not very competitive in Round I v. Stanford at Haas.
Now at 10-11 and 2-7 in conference. (Last year finished at 16-15 and 5-15)
I know it is Malcolm's first year, and there were a couple of major injuries (Meader and Scott), but this has turned into a disappointing year.

In Pac-12 matches last year, Cal serve-receive at .925 compared to the opponents .926, while this season in the ACC, Cal's percentage is .905 vs the opponents .941. Unless we drastically improve our serve-receive and passing, Cal's going to lose more matches.
DS Sophia Johnson has been the most consistent in serve receives (.955 in 2023 and .954 this year) while our 2023 libero (DeSa) was .945 compared to this year's libero at .902. To this VB fan, it appears the ACC teams serve a lot harder than the Pac-12 teams did.

I'm likely to give a pass this year.... so many injuries at key positions. Our star recruit (Former Gatorade POY from Georgia) hasn't been able to play a point. Neither has Antonio or Scott.
Six injured players out of seventeen on the roster equals 35%. Unbelievable. Cal certainly seems to have their fair share of injuries in virtually every sport. In some cases, it's excessive. GO BEARS!
