Interesting. I see Reimers listed as a Junior. I wonder if she was able to take a redshirt season last year?

I believe she played in that first Pac-12 game but saw no action afterwords.

Will be a fun season. Tons of runs scored, probably going to break the homerun record for the program. Big question is the pitching.

Kaylee Pond is listed as a RS-SR. She missed two entire seasons due to injury and has only played two. Maybe she can petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.

So which of the freshmen will play this year??

Harmony Andrade should be at 3B
Kayli Counts should be in CF
Mia Phillips could be infield, outfield or DH
Miranda De Nava should be a starting pitcher

What say you, Cal Fanatic?

I was absent from fall ball this year besides one game. In that game Andrade had 2 hits and Phillips had a pinch hit double.

I could see both seeing significant playing time. I'd be shocked if Andrade isn't starting.

CF-Anna Reimers is a senior. It's been corrected. Reimers and Teperson came in together in the same recruit class.

ACC (5 ranked):
#8-Duke
10-Fla State
19-Cal
22-Va Tech
24-UVA

Honorable Mention (3):
Clemson
Stanford
Notre Dame

Clemson brought in two transfer pitchers! Why didn't Cal do that? The two pitchers that pitched almost all of the innings last season are gone. The Bears had better score lots of runs this season if they want to stay ranked.
GO BEARS!

I reviewed the ACC schedule and Cal hosts FSU & Va Tech and visits UVA, Clemson & Stanford. The Bears miss Duke and Notre Dame in 2025. Cal plays 8 conference foes out of 17 teams for a 24 game ACC sked. Bears are not too lucky because they draw 6 of the 8 strong teams out of the 8 opponents. The two weaker opponents of the remaining seven will come to Berkeley to open the season: Boston College + Ga Tech!

I'm very surprised by this preseason ranking. Do we have some elite pitchers I don't know about?

Yeah, way too many open questions with the pitching staff. Although Reimers looked great when I saw her pitch back in October.

We'll have no issues scoring runs.

We have the pitchers to support the ranking, but what is still to be determined is if we have the pitchers to win it all. I expect to see this team in a super regional, but I don't expect us to win the title. Maybe next year.

Who do you see as our number 1 and 2? We lost our #1 and 2.

I hope that it is senior Anna Reimers and frosh Miranda de Nava. Juniors, Ryann Orange & Ashanti McDade, have both shown potential in short inning stints last season.

I don't speculate on who is going to play or where, I simply judge the capabilities of the players as I see them. There are sufficient players on the team with the talent to be successful college pitchers and a new proven pitching coach to work with them. I'm going to enjoy watching them develop into a successful staff and see them win games. At this point, I don't care who is #1.

Ok. I did not see much behind our 1 and 2 last year. The freshmen are highly touted but unproven an not as high as Roeling. I do not belive our pitching is there to justify the ranking as you said. I hope I am wrong.

In my view, a traditional #1 should be able to pitch and win two complete games each weekend during conference play, with the #2 winning the 3rd game. In that regard, I did not see anything last year that would indicate we had that level of performance, then or now. At best, last year we had two decent #2's. Even so, we won a lot of games because the pitching was good enough to keep things close and our hitters came through.

I expect more of the same this year, though I will be happy to be wrong. We have a lot of pitchers with unproven potential and as I didn't see any fall ball games I don't have a clue how well the returning players have developed. That is why I anticipate a lot of 'pitching by committee' that is just good enough to keep us in games allowing our hitters to do their jobs. Hopefully one or more of our pitchers will surprise us with a big jump in production over the offseason as we have seen in the past.

2024 California Softball (PDF) - California Golden Bears Athletics

HC Chelsea Spencer is rolling the dice on this season by not recruiting a proven starting pitcher from the transfer portal. Cal is bringing in a new pitching coach, Jen Deering, too. The Bear's offense scored 4.83 runs per game (including unearned runs) so what happens if these unproven pitchers cannot hold the lead?

Senior Haylei Archer and freshman Randi Roelling combined for 67.5% of all Cal innings pitched in 2024. For example, Clemson lost their two starters but brought in two transfers from the portal to replace them. This makes sense to me. Que sera, sera.

Important to point out that Reimers was treated more like the #2 until she got injured. She was given the ball during our first PAC 12 game. She didn't play the rest of the season.

"Clemson lost their two starters but brought in two transfers from the portal to replace them. This makes sense to me."

I suspect that Coach Spencer has a much better understanding of her player's talents and how the pitchers have developed since last season, than any poster here. Perhaps, when considering that inside information, and the available pitchers in the portal, she decided that there was no reason to panic and make wholesale changes.

We shall see, jackisback. You're a big talker now but Cal's last two pitching coaches *each* only stayed for one season. They were insiders that worked with the pitching staff every day.

Najaree Canady was obviously the best player available in the portal. A furdie I was chatting with told me that coach Spencer met with the dad who is managing her n i l possibilities. Simply put dad wanted more money then I guess we had to give I know I heard we had 350,000 or so to give. Well Texas tech gave something like a million.

Also I project that Reamers will win 20 plus games. And frosh pitching sensation De Nava will have less of a rocky froshies season than Randy rolling had.

Pre-season poll has 10 SEC teams in top 15. PAC 12 once dominated with UCLA, AZ and furd. Just my guess but suspect season end poll will not have 10 SEC teams in top 15.

Five ACC teams are in the Top 25 and Notre Dame is receiving votes.
