Georgia must have a top-notch pitching coach!

Randi was always a top talent. The jump from HS to FR is hard. It has little do with the pitching coach.

Look at Thor from Fr to So. Same with Jo and Val. That second year is usually a vast improvement.

I hope Randi does well but this is still opening day in the season. It's a long season.

"This would be a pretty bad loss."

It was no more a 'pretty bad loss' than the first game was a 'pretty great win.' They were just two games. It was the first day of the season and the results are mostly meaningless. These games are primarily for the players to learn what they need to work on and don't really impact the rest of the season. That impact will come with Conference play. Using these results to predict how the rest of the season will go, or how certain players (or coaches) will perform, is frankly asinine and only demonstrates your own ignorance. It was just the first two games. Don't get your knickers in a twist.

yeah drove down the 101 from north scottsdale to tempe today at the speed of light to check out the softball team's 1st day out for the 2025 season

beautiful weather in the low 70s as asu's facility which is framed by palm trees shimmering in the outfield, during the 1st game warm ups the bears stood in front of the dugout standing on 10 paws yelling FUN cheers led by this year team's emotional leader kaylee pond who is 100 hundo the person you would want riding shotgun next to you on a cross country drive to every buc-ee's in this beautiful country!!

starting line ups: all american shortstop acacia anders is out with messed up ribs which resulted in potential all acc home run slugger elon butler moving from 2nd base to ss and impressive true freshman mia phillips (who runs the bases with the electric speed of desean jackson returning punts at memorial stadium) starting at 2nd base

pitching: this team's 2025 campaign is gonna be determined by the pitching, this team is gonna score a lotta runs & the defense is solid with closing speed in the outfield...anna reimers looks incredibly fit kinda like an olympics skiing cross country gold medalist from a nordic country & after that it's gonna be a wide open competition...annabel tepperson is the early leader for the #2 role pitching from ahead of the count most of the time, freshman miranda de nava notched 7 strikeouts in closing out the 1st game after a jittery welcome to d1 softball, ashanti mcdade brings heat (gotta work on throwing more strikes) & ryann orange got a high upside

home runs: this team will lead the acc & potentially even the nation in home runs, it's an exciting fireworks offense to watch led by hitting coach brandon telesco...lagi quiroga got elite bat speed & led off the 1st game with a high ball to left field that kept soaring over the fence, impressive true freshman mia phillips followed her with a drilled homer to left field & who wuz so pumped up she rounded the bases in around 10 seconds, my favorite player alyssa "the ponytail" herrera (her moms is a school teacher) did her patented happy dance after her dinger, team leader mika lee continues her remarkable ascent as an improving player every season & kaylee pond's pumped up kicks home run trot!!

3rd base coaching: coach chelsea spencer is a remarkable head coach that has built a family 1st culture of young ladies that are academically ambitious & that care about each other but at the same time chelsea is still running the bears outta innings with her reckless & unsuccessful decisions to advance runners including asking her catcher to steal & being thrown out by 5 feet...honestly she should consider coaching 1st base, her poor decisions (the bears needed runners not an extra base) coupled with some not clean fielding/ball handling (lack of awareness of a runner heading to home plate) & an miscalculated cut off relay throw to home plate wuz key factors in the 2nd game loss to maryland

randi roelling: the arrogant georgia transfer & her overly involved little league dad's departure is a loss in the talent department but a plus for this year's team chemistry...this is kinda like mendoza & his sorry azz dad, good luck with nando & roelling's kinda worthless degrees when competing with berkeley & stanford grads in the highly competitive global economy that favors the well educated when they are 30 years old

saturday's doubleheader: early morning game with utah to be followed by a rematch with maryland, shocky is gonna catch the utes game before departing to handle his coaching duties with michael kim at the phoenix open in the former bears quest to win his 2nd pga tournament title

Amen. I'd rather you lose a bad game early. Look at Notre Dame football this year!

Good response by the bears this morning. Up 5-0 against Utah in the 2nd.

I'm not doing the word police thing. It was a pretty bad loss, it's early in the season and we are a strong program.

Multiple things can be true.

What matters is the response today. Knowing Coach Spencer she has her players ready to battle.

Softball vs Minnesota on 2/7/2025 - Box Score - University of Utah Athletics

Utah shutout Minnesota late yesterday, 2-0. Utes only produced three hits. Kaylah Nelson had two of them and hit a key double during the two-run rally. The pitcher that Utah just brought in against Cal, Shelbee Jones, closed out the game yesterday with 3 shutout innings. She yielded one hit and struckout four.

Kaylan Nelson is the one proven power hitter in Utah's lineup. Cal gives up a three-run HR to her to allow the Utes right back in the game following back-to-back errors by Mia Phillips & Elon Butler.

In the B5th, Utah is making a pitching change to freshman southpaw, Hailey Maestretti. Cal has two runners on due to a single and a walk by Tianna Bell & Kaylee Pond, respectively. Mia Phillips is up. She has been the Bear's hottest hitter (.571 BA%) but also has two sacrifice bunts. I hope Chelsea allows the red-hot RH hitter to swing away against a rookie lefty making her college debut. Well-Phillips ends up striking out. Herrera walks to load the bases and Ryan Orange will pinch hit. She hit over .300 when she played for Rutgers. Orange works a walk and earns an RBI as Cal's lead grows to 7-4. Quiroga grounds to 3B and ends up safe on an error. An unearned run comes across to make the score, 8-4.

This has been a sloppy game with two errors on each team. Bears only have four hits but have tallied eight runs. Three Utah pitchers have combined for 9 free passes to Cal hitters: 7 walks plus 2 batters HBP.

Hailey Maestretti - Softball - University of Utah Athletics

Final Score: Bears 10, Utes 4. Cal was gifted 5 unearned runs on 3 errors that helped provide breathing room for our pitching staff. Ryan Orange gets the victory with four shutout innings in relief. Nice bounce back effort by her after yesterday. Orange picked up an RBI, too.

Time to grab some breakfast. GO BEAR!

Maryland frosh starter from Florida, Aubrey Wurst, got hit hard on Thursday night in her college debut vs ASU.
Softball vs Maryland on 2/6/2025 - Box Score - Arizona State University Athletics
She lasted 1 2/3 IP, yielding 4 runs on 4 hits + a walk. The Sun Devils homered and doubled against her.
The rookie RHP got 5 outs but allowed 5 base runners.

Mariah Penta is a transfer from Auburn (SEC)

Leading off of the top of the 3rd, soph 2B Nailyn Marshal connects on a HR to left field. I believe that is her initial hit as a Golden Bear! Congrats! Lagi Quiroga goes back-to-back w/ her second round-tripper of the game & KO's the pitcher. Bear's have three HRs with no outs in the 3rd.

LHP Shearer relieves her after she threw a complete game victory against Cal yesterday. C'mon, Bears, prove that you can hit lefties...

I'm beginning to get a feel for frosh RHP Miranda De Nava. She seems to be a strikeout/ flyball pitcher. Out of nine outs over 3 IP, De Nava has registered one K and 8 fly outs. Zero ground ball outs. It may not be an accurate portrait of the newbie but I was simply looking at her stats. The key is that she's getting the batters out.
CalFanatic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
De Nava dealing. Only 1 hit through 3.

Cal up 4-0. Lagi's hit 2 homers. Phillips with her second triple of the weekend. Good response against Maryland.
Schroeder71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
In the 4th inning with only one out, Cal has 6 hits and 5 runs off of southpaw Shearer! Bears are answering my query about hitting left-handed pitching. Maryland is bringing in Bri Godfrey. She was one of their best pitchers last season.

The Terrapins score on back-to-back infield errors by 3B & SS exactly like in the prior game. It is the same two players, Mia Phillips & Elon Butler. The Bears still have the possibility of the mercy rule being invoked if five innings are completed with an 8 run lead or more: current score= 9-1.

Mercy Rule: Cal 13, Maryland 3. (5)

Elon Butler appeared to be struggling at the plate a bit and had been going back of the middle to CF and to RF with outside pitches. It worked. Today she went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs. She took an outside pitch over the RF fence for a 3-run dinger in the top of the 5th inning. It was her initial HR of the season. Her batting average is back up to .400 and she has 4 RBIs after four games.

Frosh RHP Miranda De Nava tosses a complete game and is now 2-0 on this young season. She yielded four hits and only one earned run over 5 IP.

We get to see Cal at ASU on ESPN+ tomorrow at 12:30 PST.
GO BEARS!

All of the pitchers who struggled yesterday and much better outings today. Only 2 earned run for both games. Fielding is still a concern without Anders who I guess is struggling swinging the bat, as she was pinched it out of the game on her first at bat. Tomorrow's game vs former Pac-8 foe, ASU should be a big test for our pitchers.

Cal jumps out 4-0 in the T3rd. The ASU ace, Kencie Brown, has come in w/ two outs. She missed last season due to injury. She is a very hard thrower.

ASU rallies with 3 runs in the B3rd to make it a one run ballgame. Reimers has given up seven hits in four IP. She appears easy to hit. Bear's defense has not helped with two errors made already. Mia Phillips made her 3rd error in five games. Quiroga has a cannon for an arm and just threw out the base stealer for the final out.

Leadoff hitter for ASU in the B5th crushes a long HR to tie the game, 4-4. The eighth hit KO's Reimers and bring in frosh De Nava from the bullpen.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Correct-Cal's infield defense has failed to make many plays behind their pitchers. The Sun Devils have 11 hits but several have been ground balls through the infield or infield hits. Butler cannot play SS & Phillips has three errors at 3rd base. Nailyn Marshall made a nice stab behind second base but Elon Butler crashed into her so no out was made. I wish I knew what was going on with Acacia Anders. Also, Harmony Andrade appears to be the best defensive third sacker but she has not had a hit yet, so she was benched. Elon Butler committed her 3rd error in 5 games at SS in the sixth inning, too.

Miranda De Nava has pitched solidly overall through three outings, but she has yielded a homerun in each.

In summary, Cal's problems turned out to be pitching and infield defense. ASU has lost most of their talent except for senior P Kenzie Brown who shutdown Cal for 4.1 IP for their victory. This 3-2 record should drop the Bears out of the national rankings.

One positive comment: Lagi Quiroga appears to be the best player on the team.

She's played briefly in a couple games. How did she look out there. Rib injuries suck for ball players.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
limited mobility, rest over time is really the only solution

but it's my understanding from multiple bearents that's it's banged up ribs, nothing broken which is good news

all of the infielders mishandled balls with not getting the glove down & cleanly fielding ground balls/linedrives, not anticipating the bounces/slow reaction times, poor throws, not aware that a runner from 3rd wuz heading home, etc.

while the pitching is not stellar, the infield defense is a bigger ISSUE right now along with chelsea's running the bears outta innings/runners with her reckless 3rd base coaching decisions
