Any thoughts? Brutal omission from the tournament last year. ACC is nasty.

7 of the top 15 rated teams are in the ACC so realistically, hoping for a strong non-conference record and somewhere near .500 in conference to battle for regionals should be the hope.

The team got absolutely hosed last season for not going to the regionals based on their overall record, conference record, how many regionals and super regionals teams they beat and how they finished the season so strong but most feel it was because of the lack of respect and SOS ratings playing in the P12. That won't be a factor anymore.

They lost two studs in Lomavita and Green along with some good pitching and players like Schultz but they have the best middle infield in the country, some solid bats and some solid arms so if they can gel early, especially opening the season on Friday with a long homestand, hopefully they can come together to make waves in the ACC, too.

Is Elijah Clayton rated highly? His bio info is not filled out but I believe that he's Royce Clayton's son. Royce Clayton was a top draft pick of the SF Giants as a shortstop, remember?

Might be a rough season. Bunch of ACC talented projected in early MLB mock drafts

We lost a couple of top pitchers to the portal. I don't see enough pitching, but don't know a lot about many of the new hurlers.

They start with a 10 game homestand against Nevada (4), Houston (3), CSU Bakersfield (1) and Santa Clara (2) before playing their first two road games at Santa Clara to finish off the home and home. All are unranked.

In ACC play, Cal plays #2 Virginia at home, #9 Florida State at home, #11 Duke on the road, #13 NC State at home and #15 Clemson at home. They miss #6 UNC and #14 Wake Forest. They also play unranked Stanford, Louisville, BC, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame along with unranked non-conference Utah, St. Mary's, USF, Pacific, Sac State and Fresno State.

Based on others receiving votes, Georgia Tech is #41. None of the other opponents received any votes.

Overall, a pretty tough schedule but all things considered, it could've been a lot worse.

Pitching is definitely a question mark this season. They lost starters Short (4.74 ERA), May (5.88) and Newmann (6.13) along with occasional short innings starter Galan (3.40) and closer Stasiowski (2.65).

They'll likely get most of their starter innings from Turnkington (3.52), Shaw (A&M transfer), Eddy (back from injury, throws 93-94) and De La Torre and a couple JC guys (Clark and Foley) will probably get some spot starts and maybe Bougie.

Clayton's a good prospect but he'll learn behind a very good SS in PJM

Here's my view, which I state every year: We are where we are because we don't have the leadership necessary to take us to where we could be -- perennially in the College World Series.

What smart High School baseball player wouldn't want to play for Cal if he knew we had the leadership to win?

For a few years I floated the idea that I would be willing to be our coach so we could achieve our potential, but the main reason that ship has sailed is that I am working on other projects.

Once we replace Knowlton, we'll have a chance to get the right leadership for Cal Baseball. If I am not in a position to throw my hat into the ring, I would love to lead the search committee ....

Season starts today. Games will be streamed on ACCNX/ESPN+, so you will need to use ESPN app and mirror on smart TV.

Doug Greenwald, son of legendary radio voice of the Giants, Hank Greenwald, will call the games.

Greenwald's great and sounds just like Hank but someone needs to tell him to lose the S in the middle of PJ's name. Keeps saying Moustzaridis all game.

Love the Darby-Greenwald combo.

Huge offensive explosion in the 7th and a Bears W!

He really does sound like his dad. Weird deja vu moments working in kitchen with game on in next room, so I'd catch moments where he really echoed Hank and it was like I was listening to a Jack Clark at bat.

Watched all four games against UNR. Looks like its going to be feast or famine this year, depending on pitching. Question, noticing the orange extension of first base into foul territory? What is up with that? Guessing the batter is safe on the orange and the first baseman records the out on the orange, in both scenarios?

Pitching has held up pretty well against less than stellar competition.

A team BA of .223 is worrisome to say the least. Last year was .292.

hadn't seen the orange base extension yet. It is likely you're guess is correct. If it translates the same, sometimes certain slow pitch softball facilities and tournaments would have that orange first base extension into foul territory and just as you guessed, the runners from home to first were expected to run to the orange bag on the foul side of the line and the defender was given the white bag in fair territory. once reaching first, only the white bag is used. It was strictly for the home to first runner.

I believe it was mostly done to reduced collisions and injury especially those pesky rolled ankles when the defense plops their foot under the runner's foot. There is really no need for both players to land in the same small space.
