Cal beats UC San Diego 3-2 in SD

But not without drama

UCSD forward had a very good look with 4 seconds left but hit the post and bounced out

Another UCSD player was in the box and got a leg on the rebound with a wide open goal but it bounced a little too high and up off her leg

Good to get the win but the Bears needed a little luck to survive this one

Still it's always great to win the opener

Several Cal defenders had major brain farts in the final seconds, but I think the Bears looked like they will be a solid team this season. All-American goalie Teagan Wy had a below par game.

Looks to be a fairly young squad this season. I count 10 freshmen, 4 sophomores on a roster of 29 players.

I watched the first half and Cal seemed to control the action. I was curious to see how the Bears would score without ACC MVP Karli Lema. It appears to be a more collaborative effort this year. Cal had openings to score but either missed the connecting pass or the open shot. The Cal defense was tough on the front end up to mid-field but UCSD got behind us on the back-end several times. A pair of offsides penalties were called on the Tritons. The defense in front of the net was weak with San Diego players open for crossing passes that were unmarked (undefended). The GK never had a chance to make a play on the ball.

I would say that the verdict is still out on this team. Overall, it was a sloppy effort all the way around, but they won on the road. GO BEARS!

I think this year's gonna be a rebuilding year just because how much they lost last year. But, a road win is always a good RPI boost at the beginning.

Cal & Cal State-Fullerton play to scoreless tie (0-0) on Sunday afternoon. Bears outshot the Titans, 20-3. I watched the first half and the visitors outshot the home team, 13-1. Last season Karlie Lema did the majority of the scoring and she is now playing professionally. Cal will need to find some reliable scorers to win tough matches in 2025. Bears dominated control of the ball during the 1st half. GO BEARS!

I was unable to watch this match. I did notice that backup GK, Sophia Keel, played the entire game as did other substitutes at three other positions. I am unaware of the reason for the major changes in their starting lineup. Any insiders know why these changes were made? GO BEARS!

Perhaps Coach McGuire is experimenting with different line-ups during the non-conference portion of the schedule so they will all be ready to go when the ACC schedule starts.

Looking at the stats Wy has been the goalie in all 3 games. Don't think Keel has played yet. They will have to eventually find a backup in case Wy is called up to play for the usa team U-20 like last year.

Good point about her potential to play for the US National Team. This game was Cal's third of the season.

Men's team looking good. 2-0 with both wins coming on the road. Hopefully this is the year Griffin can lead them to the tournament.

The Cal women lost to Pepperdine on Sunday at Edwards,1-0, also on a late goal.

This was a rematch of last year's opening round of the NCAA Tournament won by the Bears in Malibu, 2-1 (2OT).
