Mary-Ambre Moluh Breaks European Record With 57.99 Mixed Medley Leadoff

Moluh New European Record

The French team won the event in 3:39.64 despite starting the race in 7th overall after being one of just two teams to swim a woman on the backstroke leg. Mary-Ambre Moluh led the team off in a blistering 57.99 making her the fastest European woman in history, and the first to break 58 seconds.

Moluh trains collegiately at Cal in the NCAA, which is known for developing some of the fastest backstrokers in American history, and now the fastest female backstroker in European history.

There was some controversy over whether the 57.99 100 backstroke Mary-Ambre Moluh swam leading off the mixed 4x100 medley relay counted as the new European record. It was listed on the heat sheet for the session, but Moluh cleared all doubts by breaking it to win the women's 100 backstroke European title.

Moluh flipped in 27.73, .21 seconds under world record pace. She came back in 30.21 and though the world record line went by her, she got her hand on the wall .05 seconds ahead of her best from earlier these championships.

Mary-Ambre Moluh Re-Breaks European Record, Wins Gold, Erases Uncertainty



French swimmer Mary-Ambre Moluh erased any uncertainty about who the European Record holder in the 100 backstroke is on Saturday when she won gold at the European Championships.

She is one of seven women in history to go faster than 58 seconds in the event. Her opening split is fast even by the standards of the field for example, Regan Smith was just 27.94 when she set her World Record at 57.13. Kaylee McKeown split 27.92 at the halfway mark in her #2 all-time swim.

Even Katharine Berkoff, the defending World Champion in the 50 back, went out in 28.0 in her best 50 back swim a couple years ago, and 28.3 in her 57.93 to win Pan Pacs gold earlier this week.
