Tried to go into the Wash website to check out Mila Reddy but the roster link at gohuskies.com is a '404' (unavailable). Maybe lots of movements for the dawgs!

I'm confident our Bears will be SUPER SOLID at the catcher position next season with two ultra dynamic players to switch things up! We'll have Alyssa Herrera who has proven herself to be a rock behind the plate (and at DH) behind Lagi during the 2025 season and also we'll have Sophia Everett as well who played mostly right field this past season with some late season catching appearances especially in the series vs. Stanford. Just a frosh last season Sophia has a rocket of an arm, has a very quick release to second and I'm excited to see her cut down some runners next season if they test her. Excited for the 2027 season!! Go Bears!!

What happened to Alyssa last year. I had projected her to be one of the our best returning players but yet she had few at bats. Was she injured for most of the year?

Between the talented freshman class and a couple of transfers who have a real shot at cracking the starting lineup, the offense should be much improved. We still need another arm, though. Freshman pitchers almost always face a learning curve, and Clincy probably won't be an exception.

We're bringing in a backup catcher from Michigan (Rachel Del Busto)

Thanks. Would love a go to seasoned pitcher but not sure who's left and who fits in the budget...

So I was gonna post this on Sunday when I learned it Sunday on the field, talking to her friend, a coach. Once I got home, I was doing some research on her prior to posting about the transfer. By the time I was done researching about her and ready to post, I saw that she already tweeted about it.

Nila just finished her freshman year. She's from Southern California, she batted about .175. She had five hits out of like 25 or 28 AB or something like that. Sounded like she's a speedy infielder because she had stolen three bases out of three. She had a home run against UCLA and one RBI.

I'm not too concerned about the .175 batting as she was a freshman at Washington, seeing elite pitching and seeing intermittent AB is not conducive to getting into a rhythm as a batter. She played for Mercado who typically plays the alliance cup and she also played Pgf nationals as well. Her team had gone runner-up in one of the 2 finals. I don't know whether that was during Pgf or alliance. Alliance owner or part owner are Bat Buster-Mike stitch, Corona Angels-Marty Tyson , and athletics Mercado-David Mercado. From what I can see, she has a very good pedigree. She was listed as 5 foot five infielder on the Washington site. For those of you wondering I hope this helps.

For those keeping track... here is the current portal class

JR 1st Base Maalia Cherry
So IF Mila Reddy
FR P Jayda Koontz (UMBC shortened season)
So C Rachel Del Busto
Sr. U Olivia Pichardo

With the incoming freshman class and a no-brainer starter in Cherry (15 homeruns), we'll increase our power and overall offensive prowess. Pitching remains the big question.

The pitching results are quite underwhelming so far. If Cal doesn't land a quality starting pitcher, I don't foresee the team being much above a .500 next season. The Bears have to be able to pitch and play defense. Otherwise, the Bears will have to prevail in offensive shootouts to win. Hopefully, the upgraded home field will be an advantage in close games.

I'd peg us as a .500 team next year simply on the improved roster but you're right…I can't really see anything above that. Fingers crossed for more portal movement.

We bring in 2 arms in the next class. One of them being a 2 time national champion.

The top 10 or 11 Pitchers in the transfer portal we're all grabbed. There were all from P4 schools.
There's still a few interesting prospects out there. The one from Radford is intriguing however she might want to stay on the East Coast. Are Clincy and Lee our top two? Agree with you two that were about 500. Team may be a bit more.

Lee committed elsewhere when Singleton was announced as HC.

Clincy, Koontz + the returning staff is what we've got.

2027 commits include Daniella Boccanfuso (2 time PGF Champion...pitched in both championships) and Lady Magic pitcher Mikayla Finn

.500 in ACC or overall?

overall

Cal was 22 games under .500 last season. Their collective ERA was 7.11. Tamya Waiters entered the portal.

I guess it depends on SOS, but I think it's feasible to see a 15-37 team improve to (roughly) 26-26 with the improvement in offense alone. I just don't know how far we can go unless Clincy can step in and take an extremely large role as a freshman. Or some of our current arms make big progress a la Nisa Ontiversos her Senior season.

The season after looks different when you bring in two arms....

It goes to show you how valuable pitching is in softball. The top seven or eight pictures in the transfer portal were scooped up very quickly by mostly the SEC. I'm of the opinion coach sing was
Outbid. We probably didn't have the nil funds to buy a pair of Inning eaters.

It's possible Quincy will blow up as a freshman anything's possible. We've kind of had bad luck with all of those all state arms we brought in the last few years.
Ccajon2

I've also noticed that we don't have a dedicated pitching coach on the staff. Wharton and Corona are position coaches. Coach sings wife is on the staff and she was a pitcher. at Redlands so I'm assuming that she's going to be doing some of the pitching coach duties.

..problem if she blows up ..can we keep her for the following year? No doubt though ...it will help if we play winning ball.

From Softball America

Cal

Steve Singleton has gotten to work to fill the Cal roster more in his image. The Golden Bears have added Maalia Cherry, Rachel Del Busto, Jayda Koontz, Olivia Pichardo and Mila Reddy so far.

Cherry is the most well-known of the bunch. She has smashed 28 home runs the past two seasons during her time at Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego. Del Busto and Reddy come from Big Ten programs after their freshman years at Michigan and Washington. Del Busto has the tools to be a strong defensive catcher with good power numbers. Reddy, who competed for a spot in the middle infield at Washington, has a good glove that presents upside at the plate.

Pichardo joins after playing on the Brown baseball team. She hasn't played organized softball, but is competing in the Northwoods League this summer. She has already homered twice, including once against a Mississippi State pitcher Leila Ammon. It's easy to believe that Singleton, a former baseball player himself, could get the best out of her.

Koontz is a tall lefty with a good drop, curve and changeup mix. She had a 3.60 ERA over 44.2 innings as a freshman before UMBC shut down its season. The Bears aren't done adding to their bullpen yet. They've communicated with Ainsley Berlingeri and Megan Gregory.

I just completed a search on catcher, Rachel Del Busto. She basically DNP as a freshman for the Michigan Wolverines, but her bio section sounds promising.

This young lady was rated #32 prospect in the class of 2025 by Extra Innings Softball. On her 2023 travel ball team, she hit 17 HRs and threw out 20 baserunners. I'm excited to see her get another chance with Cal .
GO BEARS!

Feeling much better about the prospects of the program now. 3 new arms coming in next year + 2 in the next class. We're going to be able to throw a bunch of different looks at opposing offenses.

If I calculated correctly, this roster has expanded to 28 players as compared to 23 last year. Twenty-two position players and seven pitchers. Mya McGowan is a two-way player on both lists so should only be counted once. The Bears should have more depth at every position for 2027. We still could use another quality pitcher because Cal returns four hurlers from 2026 [w/ ERAs between 6.27 to 7.82]. Only the three newbies appear to provide material improvement. GO BEARS!
