Cal Softball Signs Historic Brown Baseball Transfer Olivia Pichardo
Cal softball has signed a historic name to break in its new softball stadium in 2027.
The Bears have added Brown baseball grad transfer Olivia Pichardo, the team announced Monday.
An icon on the diamond, Pichardo became the first woman to ever play in an NCAA Division I baseball game in 2023. The two-way player appeared in six games over four seasons.
"I'm super excited to start my softball career playing in the ACC at Cal," Pichardo said in a press release. "I'm excited to have the Bay Area as my new home and help brings some wins to a brand new ballpark with a great group of girls."
Cal didn’t specify what position Pichardo, who has no organized softball experience, would play in the Bay. At Brown, she served as a right-handed relief pitcher and outfielder and left-handed batter.
Regardless, second-year Cal coach Steve Singleton is thrilled to have Pichardo in the fold after a 15-37 finish in 2026.
"We are really excited to welcome Olivia to our program," Singleton said in the press release. "She is an elite athlete for our game who brings a great combination of speed, strength, arm strength and bat speed to a new sport.
“Her experience playing baseball her entire life will bring some intangibles to our team that will be helpful for the group. Her story is one that is fun to be a part of, and we see her ability translating on the field this year."
On May 8, Pichardo posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, offering her talents to D-1 softball programs. She also posted other clips showcasing her skills.
Cal evidently was intrigued.
The ultimate pioneer, Pichardo earned her latest opportunity. And when the Bears take the field in their new Strawberry Canyon digs, she’ll definitely be a sight to see.
