So the new facility is strictly a training facility and not for competition? Sorry If this is ignorant of me but couldn't they use the HPC for training?

The programs need an extra pool for practices, flexible swim hours for student-athletes and, of course, diving, all falling under the catch-all "training." The new facility will house a pool, meeting room, and locker rooms; "training" facilities, in the weightlifting sense, will continue to be housed in Haas and SAHPC.

In documents relating to the project, the authors did a great job conveying a sense of urgency to the facility. Cal is one of only three D-1 programs to have a men's and women's swim team, and men's and women's water polo teams. The fact that all of these championship-caliber teams currently share one pool - which also happens to be the competition pool - is quite amazing. The new facility is expected to host a minimum number of competitions per year, 4. Looks like lighting will be added in accordance to Pac-12 standards in order to accomodate for night television.

I'm somewhat disappointed that Spieker will remain main competition pool. I was hoping for a major complex that would potentially host NCAA's, but the scale of the project will be far less than that - I'm not sure if further expansion would be an option

It's crazy to build a new pool as a training pool. Look what USC is building and Stanfurd has already-incredibly stupid!

It would mean a higer cost for construction to make the facility able to accommodate spectators worthy to host a championship meet but i think Cal should do it.

..looked at stanford's pool which was built in 2001. They have a competitive pool (37meters), diving pool, and 2 training pools (50meter)..but it's outdoor!! It is mainly used for the schools competitions for all of their water sports, swimming, water polo, and synchronized dancing. It has hosted the National water polo and synchronized 'ship but don't think they're facility is capable of handing the Pac-12 or NCAA swimming probably because it is outdoors. Definitely wouldn't be able to handle the Olympics because it is a short course.

..building a state of the art swimming center - too costly and most likely needs more land than where they are planning to build now.

The men's water polo championship has been played at both Cal and Stanford, but Bay Area weather is dicey in November/December. Same thing for February/March, that's why the Pac-10/12s are always held indoors at Belmont or Federal Way. Women's water polo is the only NCAA championship that could potentially be held in Berkeley on a consistent basis if there were a major arena.

I've heard that Cal intends to fix up Spieker a little bit (better seating options) since they deviated from the original plan which didn't please the Spiekers, who are still major aquatics benefactors. The only time crowds get turned away at Spieker is men's water polo on Big Game day. 500 won't work for men's water polo on football game days or Stanford or 'SC dual meets, but it will work for every other aquatics event.

While money's always an issue at Cal, on campus space is the ultimate constraint. Softball, baseball, tennis, and a hoops/volleyball practice facility all face footprint issues.

Not true! The aquatics group has had the money to build the pool for years, it's just being announced now.The group is nicknamed the "water mafia" to those on campus because of their wealth and power. Everything you say is not true. Cal has already hosted back to back water polo championships and there is space to build a pool with the permanent seating etc.

I said it was costly and not that they didn't have the money..but they have chose to build a facility primarily for collegiate purposes. If they build permanent seating..then where can I park for my track & field meets! :p

I like the elegant design, though I wonder if it's as blue as the rendering shows.

Also, are the blue cube shadows existing buildings? i.e. Tang?

Just checked out USC's new complex, that thing looks crazy. Best in the conference.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already but does anybody know when the construction is planned to begin & end?

Also, I'm asking because I'm from the east coast and there aren't many outdoor pools over there. Why is it that Cal has mostly outdoor pools and not indoors? I think they have one indoor pool at Clark Kerr? Big meets like Pac-12s and NCAAs are always(?) held at an indoor pool, aren't they? I also feel like an indoor pool might be easier to maintain.
