Durden's gotta be pretty confident because he didn't rest a lot of guys and several scratched key events. Murphy, Trent Williams, Hinshaw, and Messerschmidt aren't rested at all. Lynch scratched the 100 fly. Hamilton may be ill since he scratched both the 200 IM and the 200 free.

I count 13 already in. Key guys who still aren't in are Gutierrez and Fabio. Possible Bears get to 18, but probably take Fabio as a relay swimmer if he doesn't qualify. Lynch and Green are only freshmen so far.

What would be the benefit of having Lynch scratch the 100 fly?

Already safely in the field and wanted to use him in another event. Green and Trent Williams looked really odd in the 500, but Durden wanted Green to get 2 long swims in before the 400 IM. Doesn't maximize team points, but an exhibition is only a single swim.

Durden's treating this more like a fall training meet than a championship meet. Wants to get guys qualified and relays are the only area where he's clearly trying to improve seeds for events where Cal already had safe NCAA invites.

Freshman Connor Hoppe is the #6 qualifier for the breast stroke final. What time does he need to qualify for NCAAs?

Very interesting. Winning the conference championship isn't all that important?

I'm no expert on this, but I think this would basically apply to only a handful of the top elite Division 1 swimming programs, which would of course include both Dave & Teri's teams.

Most schools would be ecstatic to win or make Top 3 in their respective conferences, esp the majority who stands little chance of scoring or even qualifying for the national championships. Could be a double edged sword though when an NCAA trophy is the only game in town and the end game for your program, as you'd then be judged by the same lofty standards...

52.29 is the A cut, which is the only sure thing. A tme around 52.9 probably puts him safely in the top 29.

Where do you think Stanford stand, as far as rested and maybe some tapering and perhaps they are trying to save the head coach job with a win in the Pac-6!

'SC women are a top ten team and UCLA's a top 25 team and they wore racing suits for their dual meet. Didn't help either team at Pac-12s or NCAAs. Texas women are a top 15 team and they rested their team to beat Cal and LSJU in fall duals. Helps in recruiting, but only a handful of teams have a chance at an NCAA title. That's how Teri and Durden are judged and that's how they build and manage their teams, even if they use different methods.

Their claim is that they start late in the fall and because of the quarter system can't compete in mid-season taper meets to get early qualifications because of fall academic finals. It's why they won 30+ straight Pac titles.

The latest claim was they wanted to do better at NCAAs so they de-emphasized Pacs. Last year had to rough when the Bears won both Pac-12s and NCAAs.

They have a better team this year, but still rested and tapered a bunch of guys. Good chance they win Pacs, but can't compete for an NCAA title. Don't think they get rid of Knapp, but another Cal NCAA title won't sit well on the farm. 'SC's much better than I thought, especially in middle distance and distance. Not in the hunt at NCAAs, but third at Pacs would also be rough for Knapp.

#PACSD Cal's Josh Prenot is your Pac-12 Champion in the 200 IM! Lowered his morning meet record time, finishing tonight in 3:38.83.

Prenot!! Have to assume that he's not very rested. He'll also have a very good training partner next year.

3 Green, Connor 3:42.23 A

Connor Green also posts a very solid time.

Josh went 3:38.58 last year at the NCAA's so this is a very good sign for him. This year's 200 and 400 IM's will be stacked.

Where do we stand now after 3 day? Believe Gutierrez (200free), Hoppe (100Br) and Kyle Gornay (100Back) might be additional qualifiers tonight but not sure of any others?

We got 15 in so far.
1) Murphy
2) Prenot
3) Pebley
4) Katis
5) Lynch
6) Ryckman
7) Cobleigh
8) Stubblefield
9) Messerschmidt
10) Green
11) Hinshaw
12) Hamilton
13) Williams
14) Hoppe
15) Gutierrez

I don't think Gornay will make it. He will probably swim the 100 free tomorrow and we'll see.
Dane Stassi will try to qualify in the 200 fly and Sven Campbell will try to qualify in the 200 back.
Cal still needs a 4th sprinter (Gimondi/Chung).

6 guys left chasing the final 3 slots: Fabio (100 free), Gornay (100 free), Janardan (1650), Finn (diving), Sven (200 back), and Stassi (200 fly).

Fabio's the best option for a 4th leg on the 200 free relay, so he's likely in even as a relay only swimmer. Stassi's exactly on the bubble (29th) needs to improve by 0.2-0.3.

Lynch and Hamilton both have to be sick since they've scratched multiple events. Stubblefield filled in on Lynch's fly leg on the 400 medley, but he's more valuable on other relays. 800 free relay still had a low seed (11th) mostly because Hamilton's anchor leg was off by 2 seconds.

Meet over. Any additional swimmers qualifying or will they have to try last chance meet?

With the 400 free relay DQ, Bears have 2 problem relays heading into NCAAs. Think they time trial the 400 since they're now seeded 26th. Probably lead with Fabio to get him another invite shot.

Would probably like to improve the 800 relay too, but need Stubblefield on both which is a tough time trial double. Would replace Hamilton with Hinshaw, but two new legs probably doesn't work, so they probably live with one suboptimal relay seed.

Looks like Durden shut down Gornay. Dillinger, instead of Gornay, led off the B 400 free relay.

Stassi's path is unclear. He's out now, but I think he had one Pac-12 time trial still left. Already took one time trial, but looks like he swam an exhibition yesterday. Doesn't project as an NCAA scorer, so tough call to fly him to a last chance meet.

Since there's room, Fabio's in for sure. Stassi and Finn TBD.

Interesting to see how dramatically fortunes change between dual meet and championship. In a dual meet,
the winner gets rewarded. Not so much in the championship format. There depth counts for a lot. And it
hurt Cal, which has had a hard time bringing its touted freshman class up to potential. Cal will do a lot
better in the NCAA with Cal's multiple wins, and in the NCAA there will be many competitive teams, not
just three as was the case at PAC9s.

what happened to janardan Burns? After the summer and fall thought he would had been a slam dunk to the NCAA. Possible last chance for him? Will Hinshaw be the only Bear swimming the distance at NCAA? Was hoping someone would pull off another Jeremy Bagshaw for this years NCAA.

SwimSwam: "There's still some last chance swims to come, but right now, our analysis says top 30 men in each event will earn NCAA invites for men."

Durden left Whittle and Stevens in Berkeley and Kao, Coan, and Silverthorn only swam exhibitions. Lynch, Green, Hoppe, and Gornay looked like the only frosh who were expected to be competitive.

Burns and Campbell are a bit of a concern in the sophomore class too. Both should be further along now. Not just a Cal thing since 'SC's freshmen struggled last season, but stepped up big this year. Jack Conger of Texas was rated ahead of Murphy in high school and didn't do much last season. He's coming on now.

2014 Cal was the last Pac school to win both NCAAs and the conference title since LSJU in 1998. 'SC won their first Pac title since 1979, the first time the Bears won NCAAs.
