Don't know how much, if any, scholly money Durden has left, but Josa is a stud. Teri's team is doing fine at SwimMAC with Baker and Maija, but kinda odd that Durden hasn't landed any recruits yet from his mentor David Marsh.

Have no idea how we pulled it off (scholarship-wise):

Monster pull - how does this help bridge the gap between Cal and Texas juggernaut for 2017?

Honestly, Josa is a great pickup for the team, but the gap is wide. Even though we focus on the superstars that win NCAA individual titles or even make 3 A finals, the difference between Cal and Texas is in everyone past the top 4 guys. Consider that, in terms of individual points: Murphy + Prenot = Haas + Licon, Seliskar = Schooling, Pebley = Conger. Relays are roughly equivalent (a little lower this year due to the last day DQ for the 4x100y free relay, but actually identical in 2015).

The difference is everyone else. If we define someone as a "star" because they score in 3 A finals, that's a minimum of 33 points. Then, the next tier's floor would be anyone that places first in 2 B finals, or 18 points. Texas had three swimmers score between 18 and 33 points. Texas' divers also scored 60 points combined. This year, Cal had none in this intermediate range. That's 132 points right there that made the difference.

Again, this is all assuming that all non-graduating seniors return to school as planned, after the Olympics.

Was brutal when the 2015 'Whorns had six A scorers in the 100 Fly. Seems like overkill to have four potential scoring swimmers in a given event since you run the chance of bumping someone out of scoring altogether (out of the top sixteen) or into the B final (out of the top eight). Six of the top eight scorers in an event is insane.

Nowhere in as depth as you, though! Thoughts on where the Bears end up? Kind of weird to compare the depth/strength of Durden and Teri's respective recruitment classes from this past year, as the men seem to have simply reeled in so many top-notch kids (no knock to Teri + the baby Bears).

Durden will have the top ranked class. LSJU will be up there, but they have way too many distance swimmers.

Weird aside on Tennessee. Tim Raab's a double legacy on the farm. Mom was on the team. Older sister Meaghan was a top ten recruit, who nearly chose Cal over Georgia. No real interest in the farm. Younger sister Allie (2018) is the best swimmer in the family, but may end up in the SEC too. Better red neck than Cardinal....

Clayton Forde's sister Brooke is the fourth ranked swimmer in the class of 2017. Brooke could definitely help the Bears, but may follow her brother to Georgia. Their dad Pat covers college football and basketball.

#1: California Golden Bears

Top-tier additions:  Matthew Josa (transfer Queens), #2 Michael Jensen, #5 Jack Xie, #10 Andrea Vergani, #11 Ethan Young, #17 Albert Gwo, Andy Song An, Pawel Sendyk, 'Aukai Lileikis, Karl Arvidsson, Shane Forker

Holy moly, this group. Even before Matthew Josa announced he was transferring to Cal last week, the Bears far and away had the top class in the country. The class by the numbers:
5 the number of swimmers who are 20.0/44.0 or faster in both the 50 and 100 freestyle (not including Pawel Sendyk, who's been 23.1/50.2 in long course meters)
◦ Matthew Josa 19.9/42.7
◦ Michael Jensen 19.8/42.7
◦ 'Aukai Lileikis 19.9/43.6
◦ Albert Gwo 19.9/44.0
◦ Andrea Vergani 20.0/43.9
5 the number of swimmers who are under 48 seconds in the 100 back or 100 fly
◦ Josa 44.9/1:43.0 flyer
◦ Jensen 47.3 100 fly
◦ Jack Xie 46.7/1:45.8 flyer
◦ Ethan Young 21.6/46.7/1:43.0 backstroker
◦ Andy Song An 47.6/1:45.8 backstroker
2 breaststrokers at 55.0/2:00.0 or better (Xie at 54.9/1:59.4, Karl Arvidsson at 55.0/1:59.9)
3 200 freestylers under 1:35 (Jensen at 1:33.9, Lileikis at 1:34.8, Josa at 1:34.2)
There's at least another half-dozen other mind-blowing facts, but this gives you an idea. This class was great before adding Josa, and now, with two years of a guy who has already broken 45 seconds in the 100 fly and 1:42 in the 200 IM, it's all-time great. There's eleven names here, and even the "weaker" ones would be among the best in just about every other class; Arvidsson is a 55.0/1:59.9 breaststroker, and Shane Forker is a 4:24.5/9:11.2/15:21 freestyler.

Simply put, these guys really help even out the clear edge that the Texas Longhorns have had the past two seasons. It may not happen next year (Texas is returning nearly every critical piece), but the Bears are in line to bring the title back to Berkeley soon enough.

Norwegian Record Holder Henrik Christiansen Turns Down NCAA

Norwegian record holder and two-time European Championship medalist Henrik Christiansen has turned down offers to swim in the NCAA next season, opting to stay and train in his native Norway for the foreseeable future.

Christiansen, who has reportedly rejected offers from Stanford and Cal, two of the most prestigious schools in the US, has decided to stay home and work with coach Ronnie Anstensen, a coach he has grown to trust over the years.

"I've been contacted by any college that wanted to talk to me about the scholarship. My father visited Stanford and Berkeley, both of which are among the more prestigious colleges in the United States, and they have some of the best swim teams. But I think it's better for me to swim home with Ronnie" says Christiansen.

Christiansen is the Norwegian record holder in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle, as well as the 400 IM. He won a bronze medal at the 2015 SC European Championships in the 1500 free and most recently won silver at the 2016 LC European Championships in the 400 free. At the 2015 World Championships he qualified for the final in the 800 freestyle, placing 5th.

Christiansen is set to swim three events at the Olympics in Rio: the 200, 400 and 1500 free. He is seeded 12th in the 400 and 10th in the 1500.
